“A little paradise”
Reviewed 8 March 2010

We stayed at Narima for 4 nights during 3 weeks of travelling in Thailand and Cambodia and it was our favourite place to stay. The staff are really friendly and helpful, the food is lovely and the whole place has a really nice, relaxing feel to it.

Our bungalow was clean, stylishly furnished, comfortable and cool with good air conditioning. The bathroom is partly open air but is very clean, white tiled and modern with a hot water shower. The rooms are cleaned every day.

The resort has its own secluded little bay which is really peaceful and there are sun loungers both on the beach and around the small infinity pool. The beach is sandy but when the tide goes out there are rock pools to explore which was fun.

There is a locker for each bungalow where you can keep your valuables. There are two PCs and free wireless in the restaurant area. One nice thing about the restaurant is that as soon as you sit down you are brought a free glass of water and they keep topping your glass up.

The resort was so nice we didn't get round to exploring the island but the staff are very helpful in arranging trips and they rent out mopeds. The resort also seemed very family friendly, although I would recommend it for people without children too. If you want a peaceful, quiet hideaway to recharge the batteries this could be the perfect place!

Great resort, very child friendly

We stayed at Narima for 7 nights in Bungalow C1, which was big enough for 2 adults and 2 kids (we booked an extra bed for the second child). The beach is rocky, but there is plenty of sand and our kids loved the crabs scurrying about on the rocks. You do have to take a little care getting into the sea, but we didn't find this a problem at all.

The restaurant is relatively expensive for Thailand, so we tended to eat at Lemon Grass which is just a 5 minute walk along the beach.

The owners of Narima are delightful, extremely helpful. We also witnessed the staff taking charge of some of the smaller children/babies to give their parents a break.

We also very much recommend Narima Diving, and have written a separate review for that.

This could have been heaven - if my husband and I were the sort of people to get the best from Narima. Any criticism I have is really just about things that didn't suit us, but were no fault of Narima's itself.

Good things
1) The restaurant, reception, pool area and bar were gorgeous; really well designed and full of lovely wooden furniture.
2) Although we were there in peak season and the resort was full, we had the pool to ourselves every night we stayed there.
3) The food was amazing with a good mix of Western & Thai
4) The staff were very friendly and helpful, always smiling and greeting us cheerfully. The owners were great too, very chatty but discreet. The only word of warning is that the woman who appeared to work after 6pm in the office/reception spoke no english at all, so if you want to book trips etc try to go the office in the morning
5) The setting was idyllic, amongst the rainforest.
6) The rooms were private with excellent balconies and hammocks and we had A/C & a fan which was great
7) The private beach was lovely, with plentiful sunloungers for everyone and absolutely pristine clean

Things that didn't suit us
1) The resort is REMOTE. Just along from it is a small shop selling sweets, cigarettes etc, but other than that there is nothing in the vicinity. If you don't drive, you can take a taxi (Ban Sala Dan about 500bt return), but that adds up over a long stay. We hired a Jeep for 1200bt for a day, which was fab, but didn't want to risk driving in Thailand on motorbikes. At night the road is so dark that I wouldn't recommend long walks anywhere. We're not sun lizards at all, and wanted to do more than sunbathe so we felt quite trapped.
2) Although we knew that the bathrooms were open when we booked it, I think we were being naive about how bothered we would be by ants & other huge bugs. This is not Narima's fault but ours, for thinking we would be more chilled than we were about it.
3) The beach is very rocky, meaning that unless you want to swim quite far out, it's impossible at low tide. The current seemed very strong when we were out, and there weren't any fish to see snorkelling. However, it's perfect to flop and sunbathe on.
4) The rooms were fairly basic, but clean with fridges. However, there were no safes in the rooms, although there were lockers in the office. We also missed TV News. Again we knew the rooms didn't have TVs when we booked it and we're not normally big TV watchers, but we didn't realise how much we missed it That's a really sad reflection on us rather than Narima, I know, but just a warning to be honest with yourselves about what you like!

Overall Lanta is perfect if you want a child friendly, relaxed, good value holiday that revolves around the beach and not a lot else. I would absolutely recommend it for the right people. We had originally booked it for 7 nights but left after 4. We were sorry to go to an extent but thought if we stayed for 7 we would have regretted it. And we made the right decision.

Narima is located in a lovely part of Ko Lanta - a still somewhat undiscovered part of Southern Thailand.

Our bungalow and view, as well as the beauty of the resort were top notch.

However, there are a few downfalls. There are many families with small children who make a lot of noise at the pool and around the grounds. In addition, other than the owners and manager, the staff is not tremendously helpful nor friendly.

Wish the review could be better as Narima has much potential.

6 adults (2 x 70s & 4 in their 40s) and 6 children (15 to 10). Despite the age range and diversity of interests, everyone had a GREAT time: snorkelling, scuba certification, elephant rides, Thai cooking school, boat to surrounding islands, motor cycle hire for exploring, and just swimming and lazing around with the occasional cold beer. Hosts and staff could not have been more helpful and everyone in our party found something on the menu to enjoy. Housekeeping excellent. Minivan pickup at Krabi airport went without a hitch and no one was bored by the 2 hour 15 minute trip and the 2 ferry crossings through rural Thailand. We all thought the plane trip from Bangkok and the minivan trip were a small price to pay for the perfect family holiday. Cabins are big enough; bed excellent; could be more hanging space.

Ko Lanta is a nice quiet island. There are not a lot of crazy parties but the beaches are really nice and quiet. The Narima resort is on the southern part of the island about 20-30 minutes outside the main town. They rent motorbikes at the hotel for 300 Baht a day and driving around the island is not as crazy as it is in Phuket or Bangkok.

The highlight is the staff, they really are there to help you with everything you need. The bungalows are comfortable but like everywhere in Thailand, one must become OK with ants. Don't leave any food or drinks open in your room! The shower/toilet are connected to the main bungalow but are open to the outdoors. It is a little rugged but not uncomfortable and the hot water worked great.

The food is good and reasonable priced. There is a great beach just a little north that has a LOVELY bar called Simple House that sits perched on a cliff. The view of sunset from there is amazing.

We found the hotel to be a good base for adventures around the island. It is also a short ferry ride to Phi Phi (avoid the tours and get a long-tail when you land on the island).

What a wonderful haven and stayed 6 nights as found no alternative as suitable. Location over the ocean awesome, quiet private beach, pool great, low tide walking fun. Bungalows private and very well appointed and maintained. Restaurant was excellent and we enjoyed all our meals there. Plenty about to do, rented bikes and travelled around and about the island. Staff friendly and helpful in arranging transport and activities. We were there during slow season, so very quiet and amazing storms which added to the opportunity to relax. Highly recommended and we would return for sure.
