This is our favorite place in Thailand. We've been coming back 4 times. The location is perfect. This is Thailand I think other travellers have had too high expectations. If you want international five-star establishment far a way from the "real" Thailand this is not the place for you. This is Thailand and we love it.
The rooms are nice the massage really good. Koh Lanta perfect for families with younger children. Shallow warm waters without currents or bid waves.
The staff and management are nice and do their best.

I just returned two days ago from my first trip to Thailand with my fiance and two good friends celebrating their honeymoon. Keeping in mind that this is one of the more "affordable" resorts along this strip, I do have several issues which I think are inexcusable despite the price. They are summarized below.

We (2 couples) reserved the 2 beach front superior rooms, and thank GOD we did! I would've hated to see the standard rooms. The toilet barely flushed; we would have a contest to see who could get our stuff down the toilet on the first flush! I never mastered it, and would succeed after 2 or 3 times. Our travel companions' room's shower drain clogged and after one afternoon was left with an inch of standing water. Towels feel like sandpaper and are not replaced. Beach towels are never replaced and smell like fish after using them for a few days. Another review mentioned stray dogs; yes there are lots of them, although they didn't really bother us as much as the fellow guests of the resort yukking it up in front of our rooms until 2am and having to fight for deck chairs like kids. We were the ONLY non-Swedes in the whole resort, and moreover, the whole beach, which we were not expecting. Mosquito nets for the beds have holes in them, thus negating the purpose of said nets. There is a haphazard
system for keeping track of what is used from the fridge, and we aren't sure we were accurately charged. Don't bother with the Thai food at the restaurant unless you like bland, bland, bland. My Tom Kha was completely missing Kaffir Lime, which is a primary ingredient. Cocktails are short on booze.

Goods things include a decent buffet breakfast, the nicest stretch of beach on Long Beach, which with all said and done, you spend more time there than in the rooms. There is also a gentleman nick-named Golf, who manages the restaurant, and he is the true gem of the joint - very helpful with local facts and suggestions, etc.Seeing him is the only reason we would return.

And again, we obviously did not do enough research, since we had no idea we would be the only young childless Americans on this beach. If this is you, pick another beach altogether!

This hotel needs better management as it just seems to run aimlessly on its own. There are about 8 dogs who live there and they fight, run loose barking at all times of the day and night as well as run through the eating area. The staff just shrug their shoulders when you complain. Terrible food and buffet. Internet slow and expensive.
Staff is polite but indifferent. Housekeeping leaves nothing extra and you have to ask for toilietries. Rooms are OKbut nothing special
They never clean the beach as guests do that every morning. Beach chairs are in horrible shape and in short supply. In summary, great location but it needs a major makeover.

After looking at the reviews on TripAdvisor and having a look at this resort's website, we decided to book. When will I ever learn to trust TripAdvisor! We've stayed in many resorts in Thailand in the past 20 years and I have to say that this one gave us the most dissapointing first impression yet.

When you first drive into the site, you are welcomed with a lot of construction. They are building a set of homes for the parents of the Swedish school that is on their property.

The lobby/restaurant area is worn down and dark. The front desk staff are sort of welcoming and friendly.

We booked one of their beachfront suites which turned out to be a duplex. The front of our suite was full of deck chairs and lots of people. Not a lot of privacy.

The suite was okay but the walls were dirty, the bathroom smelled a lot and you were not able to really open the curtains up unless you wanted the crowd of people in front to check you out.

The pool was good.

The restaurant was expensive and the food quality was not brilliant.

But I guess for us the most dissapointing part was the attitude of the staff. It was most evident at the breakfast buffet. No one said good morning nor acknowledged our presence. The head waiter continually picked food out of the trays to eat. Not a smile in the place. This attitude pervaded throughout the property and really showcased the atmosphere there.

We wouldn't stay again nor would we return to Ko Lanta. The Best Western hotel further down the beach looked excellent.

Nice hotel. We had the cheapest rooms. Opt for a better room. Does not cost much more but is a bit better. If we had opted for a better room I'd given i 4 stars.

Nice beach bar/restaurant with fresh seafood on the beach (see pictures).

Nice pool and childrens pool. My daughter (5 at the time) almost learned to swim here.

Magnificent sunsets.

Nice restaurants nearby on the beach. Short trip /5 mins by tuk) to Saladan.

Planning to go to Koh Lanta agin february 2007 and will probably stay at Southern Lanta Resort again.
