Southern Lanta Resort

we stayed in this hotel during the low season, and we had a room with sea view for about 1000 Baht (incl breakfast), which is really cheap! The room was not the most expensive one, it was a bungalow with beach view, just next to the more expensive (and larger) bungalows with sea view. But the view was almost the same!
Food was very good, people super-friendly. They offer a free shuttle service twice a day to the small village in the north of Ko Lanta.
The swimming pool was also good.
The hotel is rather difficult to fiend when coming from the main road.
Outside the hotel, in walking distance on the main road, there is everything you want (and it is cheap!): bike rental, internet, laundry service, good restaurants, travel booking, ...
We had a perfect holiday there!

My bofriend and I stayed here for 2 nights. We booked as the blurb in the rough guide sounded good and the price was reasonable.

The staff are not at all friendly, and as someone else metioned in their review, they do not smile at you or acknowledge you. One of the first things we were told on arrival was "If you lose your towels we will charge you 500 baht, if you lose your key we will charge you 1000 baht" not the warmest of welcomes!

We booked a superior garden room- what we got was a dark, dirty room with dated decor. One strip of wall paper had been ripped off the wall, the mirror was filthy. The towels that we had been warned not to lose were very stained and threadbare.

We only ate cereal at the breakfast buffet as all the other food was not covered so the flies were able to land on it.

After 2 nights we moved to Lanta Sand on Long Beach which was only 900 baht more per night and worlds apart from the unfriendly staff and dingy rooms at the Southern.

A friend and I stayed at the Southern Lanta for a weekend trip to Ko Lanta in February. Our bungalow had A/C and was within a 4 minute walk to the beach. However, we did not fit the demographic of the rest of the hotel guests as they were mostly older couples or families with young children. Other than breakfast at the hotel (included), we didn't really stay on property. The Hat Khlong Dao Beach (where the hotel is located) is a great swimming beach, and we enjoyed the variety of restaurants and bars that were on this section of the island. I would recommend this hotel to families, but not to singles/couples in their 20s or 30s. Cost was about $60/night for a bungalow with A/C.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was nice. We stayed 7 nights in a Superior Bungalow garden view room and the last night in a Standard garden view. The staff was very helpful when we switched between the rooms. The rooms were clean and nice, the only real difference was the bigger bathroom and shower in the Superior room and slightly better bed.
The hotel restaurant had very nice food. Breakfast was ok.

The beach was big and nice with soft sand and clean water.

A lot of the guests in the hotel where families with small children so if you are looking for a romantic getaway without disturbance from small children families you should probably go more south on Koh Lanta.

We've just spent a week in fabulous Ko Lanta!

The resort was lovely, breakfast each morning was lovely, we enjoyed getting our omeletes and scrambled eggs made to order.
I love french toast and this was cooked in bulk and could have benefited from being a little fresher.

We booked the beach front bungalow, which is a duplex, so most of the time the people next door werent heard, but the couple in toward the end of our stay were a little louder.

The staff were very friendly.

Take aerogard, mosquitos in the rooms and in general are a problem and there are no mosquito nets. The mosquitos are quite lame compared to Australia, so very easy to kill.

There was a downpour one evening & a stray dog parked itself infront of our door as we were outside our room sitting on the randah, when we tried to move it to go inside, it growled at us. So i wouldn't recomend taking on the dogs! We got inside through the sliding doors & it eventually went away.

The restaurant was average, my food was only just warm.
We often went to Veed View, which is on the left of the resort.
It does fantastic pizzas, currys, fish etc. Wonderful people too.

Apart from the mosquitos, the room was lovely. Made up nice everyday by the cleaners.

Ko Lanta is very family orientated, lots of kids running about, though all were very well behaved & having a load of fun. The beach is very good for kids too as it is shallow for a long time & very small waves, so not for someone who loves to catch waves!

The area is very popular with the Swedish, which was just fine with us.

New Years on Ko Lanta was a treat!
We can't wait to take our friends there!

This is our favorite place in Thailand. We've been coming back 4 times. The location is perfect. This is Thailand I think other travellers have had too high expectations. If you want international five-star establishment far a way from the "real" Thailand this is not the place for you. This is Thailand and we love it.
The rooms are nice the massage really good. Koh Lanta perfect for families with younger children. Shallow warm waters without currents or bid waves.
The staff and management are nice and do their best.

I just returned two days ago from my first trip to Thailand with my fiance and two good friends celebrating their honeymoon. Keeping in mind that this is one of the more "affordable" resorts along this strip, I do have several issues which I think are inexcusable despite the price. They are summarized below.

We (2 couples) reserved the 2 beach front superior rooms, and thank GOD we did! I would've hated to see the standard rooms. The toilet barely flushed; we would have a contest to see who could get our stuff down the toilet on the first flush! I never mastered it, and would succeed after 2 or 3 times. Our travel companions' room's shower drain clogged and after one afternoon was left with an inch of standing water. Towels feel like sandpaper and are not replaced. Beach towels are never replaced and smell like fish after using them for a few days. Another review mentioned stray dogs; yes there are lots of them, although they didn't really bother us as much as the fellow guests of the resort yukking it up in front of our rooms until 2am and having to fight for deck chairs like kids. We were the ONLY non-Swedes in the whole resort, and moreover, the whole beach, which we were not expecting. Mosquito nets for the beds have holes in them, thus negating the purpose of said nets. There is a haphazard
system for keeping track of what is used from the fridge, and we aren't sure we were accurately charged. Don't bother with the Thai food at the restaurant unless you like bland, bland, bland. My Tom Kha was completely missing Kaffir Lime, which is a primary ingredient. Cocktails are short on booze.

Goods things include a decent buffet breakfast, the nicest stretch of beach on Long Beach, which with all said and done, you spend more time there than in the rooms. There is also a gentleman nick-named Golf, who manages the restaurant, and he is the true gem of the joint - very helpful with local facts and suggestions, etc.Seeing him is the only reason we would return.

And again, we obviously did not do enough research, since we had no idea we would be the only young childless Americans on this beach. If this is you, pick another beach altogether!
