Lanta Castaway Beach Resort

Reviewed 21 December 2011

We stayed here mid December in the Beachcomber bungalow (the most expensive) and whilst it was very nice, it certainly wasn't worth the price.
We have been living in Southern Thailand for over 10 years now and have stayed in various different resorts over the years so know what to expect when it comes to price and accomodation.

The Beachcomber is the bungalow nearest the bar and retaurant, (of which, the restaurant to be fair isn't particularly noisy, as the restaurant closes at 9), but the music from the next door resort is very loud and people sat just chatting at our resort bar can be heard very, very clearly. Very annoying to say the least! Not what i would expect of the resorts premium room. It also doesn't really have a sea view to rave about and has no privacy because has large windows all round, so you have to keep the curtains when you are in the room closed so other guests dining or walking by can't see in. The room is big and spacious however but the bathroom is very mediocre and the room is in the totally the wrong location. Why would you put your best bungalow right opposite the retaurant and less than 50 feet away from the bar?? Absolutley ludicrous!!

The staff are very nice, however, i have no clue who the owners are, as we were never introduced. I thought it was a family run resort and therefore it would be been nice to see who these people were, or at least get a hello welcome etc etc.

I can't fault the breakfast, very nice as was included and good choice. Lunch and dinner menu was pricey, we only tried it once, finding better and more reasonable food outside.
The gardens and public areas are well maintained and very attractive, so cannot fault these either. There is definately room for a pool and it's something I think Castaway should consider, especially given price they are charging.

The beach at this location isn't the best, as if you want to walk along you have to first negotiate a deep channel and rocks before reaching the main part. If you are not child friendly like us then i would avoid this particular island during school holidays as they are everywhere. Babysitting services are yet to be fully appreciated here and so parents have to sadly bring kids with them when dining. Some people like kids running about playing at night, i however do not. (To this resorts credit, they have signs saying to parents not to let kids do this here, so that not a major issue thankfully.

In comparison to other similar resorts we have stayed in, I would not rate this particularly high. For a lot less money we have had better accomodation, facilities and a pool too in similar beach front locations.

In conclusion. Clean, well presented resort, don't bother with the most expensive room, it really isn't worth the extra, unless you want to either watch people eating/drinking or want to listen to their conversations. If you want a bit of peace keep away from the first 3 bungalows. If you aren't a fan of children check with the resort on family policy. (oh what bliss a couples resort would be....:)

Would we stay here again? Yes, however well away from the beach.

Room Tip: Do not pay over the odds for the Beachcomber room, it is in the worst location for peace and quiet a...

NitLanta, Owner at Lanta Castaway Beach Resort, responded to this reviewResponded 1 January 2012

This guest stayed with us for 8 nights from 20-28 December. They submitted their review on December 21st.

It was the Christmas holiday which is the busiest time of the year for tourists in Thailand. As you can imagine, during this time, most tourists tend to be in a festive mood and there’s more energy in the air. As such, the restaurant and bar are busier than the rest of the year. This same scenario plays out at our neighboring resorts. On both Christmas Eve and New Years Eve, we close the restaurant and bar later in order to accommodate the majority of people who want to be out and enjoy the holidays with the other guests, family and friends.

This guest booked the room far in advance (in May) via an online agent. They sent us a couple direct emails around the end of May with questions about transfers. Within one email they wrote: ‘Could we request the quietest Beachcomber Bungalow you may have if there is such a thing’.

I responded… ‘We only have one Beachcomber Bungalow, so by default you're getting the most quiet one :-) No worries, we're a small boutique resort with a laid back atmosphere. You can see a resort map by clicking the link on our webpage: (link removed) We'll likely get busy for a couple hours each evening around dinner time, but even then it's stays laid back.’

In my response, I failed in two ways: First, I should have thought about the fact that it’s busier during the Christmas holiday and highlighted that to them. Second, I didn’t catch on that they were looking for a very quiet, secluded type of spot. If I would have realized, I most likely would have recommended they try one of the resorts on the two southern-most beaches of Koh Lanta where it’s very secluded rather than stay with us on Long Beach.

I did direct them to look at our resort map on our website. Thus, the Beachcomber Bungalows’ location within our resort should not have been a surprise.

Our property layout is such that we do not have secluded / ‘hideaway’ type bungalows. Therefore, for those people looking for seclusion, our resort is probably not a good fit. On the other hand, our resort does have a very relaxed feel to it, and most people do feel very comfortable staying here.

Our resort is located in Phra Ae Village. As such, we do have neighboring resorts and also numerous businesses up at the road. There are times when music from the neighboring resort or the bars up at the road can be heard. The music volume is typically at reasonably low levels with the occasional exception when one of the bars has a party night. For most guests, the volume is normally low enough that they are not bothered by it.

We made a conscious decision not to install a swimming pool in order to reduce the risk of noise it might cause. Both young and old people alike will, at times, get overly playful in swimming pools leading to yelling and screaming. The logical place for us to put a pool would be near the beach between our bar and massage. However, we feared the potential noise from a pool would detract from the overall atmosphere in that area. As we are located on the beach, most people who like swimming pools, find they can live without one while staying with us.

We stayed for 6 nights in November, we wanted to relax somewhere quiet and castaway was perfect for this. rooms were great for the price and really clean, food was great and inexpensive. Beach is quiet and beautiful. The best thing about this place was the excellent staff, so friendly and helpful. Would definitely return here!

Lanta castaway is a nice place to stay on Lanta. It's not wow, but then neither is the price, it represents good value. The bungalows are well maintained and set in beautiful gardens that are maintained every day. A short stroll down the path to the lovely beach. You can organise day trips (snorkelling on Koh Rok was stunning, absolutely beautiful, far better than Phi Phi for snorkelling) and they also have a restaurant - breakfast was included in the price and was nice enough. The lunch / dinner menu is not the best but does cover a range of dishes - as a foodie it didn't wow me but no complaints either.

There are nice sun-loungers provided for the use of guests on the beach and you can get a massage only a few steps away (or at any of the many places on the beach offering massages for about 350/400 baht).

The resort was quite quiet while we were there (mid November), maybe due to the floods in Bangkok. I probably wouldn't come back as there are other places I'd go to before returning to Lanta but it was a nice stay and no complaints at all with the accommodation.

We stayed in the resort for a week and it was a great vacation. The garden of the resort is really nice and the gardeners do a great job of keeping it that way.
The restaurant is a bit pricy but the bar is really great for sun downers.
The garden bungalows are great value if you are ok without aircon. However the aircon apartments are also a bit roomyer.

We stayed here for 3 gorgeous weeks in April / May 2010. Loved every minute of it.
We rented the Beach Bungalow & it was always kept immaculatley clean by the domestic staff. Bar/ Cafe staff were lovely, always smiling & happy to see you.
We were there on Employee Day, where the managers paid for the staff to visit PhiPhi Island for the day! (I wish my employer would do that!) A lovely thing for any manager to do for their staff to show they are appreciated.
I really have no faults at all with Ko Lanta or Castaway - it was beautiful & I will return one day

We stayed here back in April and had a great time.

The staff were friendly and the food was great.

Best day in Thailand was hiring a scooter and going into town.

We would 100% come back

I'm loathe to spread the word on how nice this place is, as I'd like to keep it secret, but in fairness to the owner, must concur with all the other positive reviews.

Had a magical four nights here, and delighted the place lived up to its reviews.

The resort is well laid out, bungalows/villa's confortable and nice design touches. Food here was excellent, in fact consistently the best we had in Lanta.

Darin (the owner) is fantastic, chilled out friendly and helpful. The massage on the beach is a real treat, and coconut milkshakes delicious!

Ko Lanta is lovely, developing quickly, but absent from girly bars, beach sarong sellers, and thumping techno music 24/7. Pretty sunsets, few bars, nice day trips, and relaxing.
