Disclaimer: We only visited Cha Ba’s restaurant, Picasso and did not stay in the resort ourselves. We did meet people who stayed there and were pleased about it, but only have first-hand experience with the restaurant and their staff.
In our two-week stay on Koh Lanta we tried various restaurants (mostly those at the seafront as that was most convenient with our two young children), but after a few hits and misses kept coming back to Picasso because of the mix of the right atmosphere, good food, and super-friendly staff.
The food is pretty good, but not too special. It’s mainly Thailand’s staple dishes, the usual western food and a bunch of Swedish stuff to boot. It’s all of slightly-above average quality, with a good plus for their pizza that was the best we’ve had on our stay and a pretty disappointing mixed grill from the BBQ once, which was just tough meat. I most enjoyed their Thai food which was always of good quality. I tended to pick the spiciest I could find, which were sure hits.
For the food alone I wouldn’t give it five stars though, maybe a 3.5-ish to 4. What makes all the difference is the staff and the ambience of the place. The outside looks quirky, like something from a kid’s dream, inspired by fairy tales, jurassic park and Thailand. It was fun for our kids and we just enjoyed that it was a pleasant ambience to be in. The staff were the main attraction to us though, all of them seemed really into their job, be energetic, helpful and friendly. We quickly had more ‘click’ with them than with the staff at our own resort and it really helped that they loved our two kids. Whenever they had a spare moment they’d spent time with the kids who were playing in the sand in front of the restaurant or stop by our table, run around and act crazy.
This restaurant was five star to us because it was *fun* to be around, the ambience and food were good and the people just superb. It always felt good to be around hard-working, friendly, pleasant people. We gave everybody a big hug when we left.
If we’d ever go back to Koh Lanta we’d definitely visit again.
