Haad Tian Beach Resort Koh Phangan
Ranked #53 of 92 Hotels in Ko Pha Ngan

We stayed here for 5 nights over New Years, and absolutely loved it. The people here are great, the location is great, and for all the amenities at the resort, the price is pretty good. The only downside I can see is that it is fairly remote, so if you're looking for some night life you won't really find it here. But for a place to relax and just enjoy the island, it's perfect.

There are some rooms here that I would say are expensive by Thai standards, but there are quite a selection of room types, so really you can find a room for any budget. If you want to splurge there are really nice rooms, but if you just want a cheap and simple bungalow with no aircon, there are those too. There is a restaurant on site that has awesome food. They have a little library of books that you can read, there are masks and snorkels to use, and they even provide motor bike rentals (which is the absolute best way to get around town). If a motorbike is not your thing, there is a daily shuttle that takes you into town. The pool is gorgeous as well, though the beach was my preference... When the time finally comes that you have to leave, they can help you book your ongoing travel plans. Best part though, I really have to say, is the people that work here. They are all so helpful, nice, and just seem like they are generally enjoying life which really makes staying here so enjoyable.

I was tempted to not write this review so I could keep this place a secret, but really, I have to recommend this place because it was so great. You won't be disappointed.

We first stayed here in 2001 when it was just little bungalows with no electricity after 10pm, cold showers, no aircon. Just a basic and simple place to stay. It was awesome!!! We had the best 4 weeks ever, spending the days sitting in our hammocks, reading, drinking orange lemon shakes, chatting, eating banana pancakes in the morning, staring out to the ocean, swimming and lazing by the beach, chatting to the owners and their family and friends, who at others places I guess you would call the staff, but here they were just your friends. I know this will sound ridicilous but I became friends with a dog, who followed me everywhere I went and sat under my hammock while I was reading. We became inseperable and when we left, she ran after me for about 2km's, up the road until the little Haad Tian road joined the main road, at which point she stood there staring at me. It was very sad. But I had the happiest memories from Haad Tian and spent the next few years daydreaming about it while at work.
So then the next trip to Haad Tian. 2005 - once again, we had the most awesome time. This time we stayed for 3 weeks, (met a new dog, Kikki, sadly my old friend had gone to doggy heaven). This time we had electricity, which was handy because this meant there was no danger of stepping on a spider in the middle of the night while walking to the loo. Once again we spent our time eating delicious food, cooked by the fabulous chefs, drinking neverending shakes, chatting to the owners and all the fabulous and amazing people that work there, swimming, reading by the beach and basically relaxing.
When we left, I cried like a stupid baby while hugging everyone goodbye and promising to come back as soon as we could. It was very emberrassing but I just didn't want to leave. So back we came in 2007. This time, as my mind replayed the fantasies of Haad Tian and we finally rounded the corner and Haad Tian came into view, I nearly got a heart attack. Half the place had been rebuilt, with proper solid buildings, and the bungalows which now involved tiles, a proper roof, hot water, all that proper resorty stuff. I know its pathetic but I coudn't help being disappointed. I think I must be one of those pathetic sentimental people that hates progress. Of course I got over the shock soon enough and we still had an awesome 5 weeks...pretty much the same as before, except with slightly more people. (Kikki the dog was still there too...we re-bonded). I still refused to stay in the new swanky bungalows...give me the basic cold shower ,no aircon, no tv variety of bungalow any day. The only annoying thing was that more people meant more chance of [--], and we did have a few loud inconsiderate morons staying in the next bungalow who insisted on riding their motorbikes back to the bungalow at 4am, revving them a bit, and then playing crappy rap music for hours...but you find [--] anywhere, that's just a matter of luck.
Silll, once again, when we left, I cried like a stupid baby, even though I said I woudn't.

Now, just to give you an idea of the atmosphere: this is not the kind of place you come to if you want to party all night, walking from resort to resort, drinking and vomiting into your sandals and having sex with random passers by. You can't do that anyway, this is the only resort on the beach. If that's the kind of place you want, its best to stay on the other side of the island where the full moon parties are. And don't come here expecting tonnes of shopping and entertainment - this is not the type of place where people walk up and down the beach trying to sell you leather woven bracelets. As I said before, its the only resort on the beach. This is where you come to get away from those people. You sit around at night, eating dinner, drinking, chatting to everyone, patting the dogs, playing that big wooden board game with the wooden doobies where you have to get the little things in the hole; then you spend the days swimming, reading in your hammock, going on daytrips snorkelling or taking the kayak out and having a look around the place. You basically come here to get away from all those impersonal resorts with no atmosphere.
One update to this is that we haven't gone since 2007 - my sister and her boyfriend went in December 2008 though. This time, things had progressed AGAIN, and there was a swimming pool with a big dolphin, lights everywhere, the eating area had been tiled and the whole place had been resorted up....I would have been disappointed, but my sister said it was awesome and they had a great time....so I can only assume it hasn't lost its Haad Tian charm.
Sorry, this ended up being a ridicilously long review, but I've just got so many happy memories of Haad Tian, I had to write it all down.
