We had the weirdest experience here. Our room was decent - nothing fancy, but it was clean. The pool is amazing, but full of kids during the day. You can watch the sunset from the pool which is quite special. We didn't eat in the restaurant because of the way we were treated. The staff was not friendly and would even talk in Thai about us right in front of us and laugh at us - it made us very uncomfortable. Of all the places in Thailand (hotels and restaurants) this was the only time we felt ridiculed and not treated with kindness. Like I said it was really weird and if we hadn't paid in advance we would have left there immediately. There's a new place called See Through Bungalows close by that looked super fancy, the people were super nice and they would have given us a bungalow for 1200 baht instead of 1700 baht. Just sayin...

Room Tip: We had room 307 which was in a good spot, but not right on the water so it was a little cheaper.

Sandy Bay Bungalows was a great resort in an awesome location - far, far away from the madness of Haad Rin and the Full Moon Party activities. It has a great restaurant with delicious food and awesome fruit shakes. The pool is lovely, there's tonnes of loungers along the beach for hotel guests to use and a bar on the beach also.

We were on Ko Phangan to celebrate New Years Eve with some friends at the Full Moon Party. I will never, ever return to this island - and the party in particular - because I found it polluted, scary and out of control BUT that's another story altogether....

In terms of a place to stay on Ko Phangan, Sandy Bay Bungalows and Had Yao Beach is ideal for those who want a beach holiday in Thailand, combined with some happening night life and good restaurants - bars and eateries line the beach and are open well into the wee hours.

Our room at Sandy Bay was clean, but very dark and outside swarms of big mosquitoes buzzed around eagerly awaiting a moment to get inside. The bathroom was basic but pretty clean. We just had a fan room and because the room is out of direct sunlight for most of the day we found that having just a fan was adequate enough.

So all in all Sandy Bay can definitely be recommended for its food, bar, pool, location, beach and rooms BUT..... not its staff. Prior to arriving I had read some bad reviews about the staff, but just thought: "We are laid back Kiwis, we get along with everyone" and thought that if we treated them with respect and a smile then they would do the same. Alas this was not the case. Despite our patience and friendliness towards the staff we were met with either no service, slack service or simply a bark from the mamasita who seems to run the show. The men who work at Sandy Bar seem to have succumbed to this woman's bossy, demanding nature, and slink away when they see her coming. Eventually, we got sick of her constant barking - at both guests and staff - so we boycotted even eating breakfast at the resort, and instead walked down the beach to a friendlier restaurant.

We are good-natured, chilled out people who never demand anything and always treat everyone the same way - with friendliness, kindness and a big smile. But at this particular place it didn't seem to matter, and we were growled and barked at like misbehaving school children by the scary boss lady who rules the roost at Sandy Bay.

Other than that, I would return to the resort ..... if I ever made the mistake of going to Ko Phangan again.

Room Tip: A bunglow on the beach as opposed to a room on the side of the rocks/cliff!

The room was very much overpriced for what it was, very old and plain and the bathroom was not 'western' as it had been described (the toilet was western, you just had to shower over it.) However in saying that the room was comfortable with a nice balcony.

Danny was great, a real asset to the hotel - he seemed to be a man of many talents, whether he be the receptionist, waiter, porter, fire twirler, barman, just to name a few. The other staff were absolutely hopeless and were more interested in the games on their mobile phones than us as the customers, I think just reading all of the reviews saying this explains it all.

The location is great and so is the food at the Restaurant, we love Haad Yao but will not stay here again. We know from personal experience that the accommodation next door is much cheaper and much better quality and a lot friendlier.
We would change our minds and return if the customer service from the staff was stepped up quite a few notches.

Room Tip: Many rooms are up high with steep steps so if you have difficulty with stairs, maybe request a room...

Sandy Bay Bungalows is one of the earliest resorts in the fantastic bay, family owened and with updated standards of the bungalows along the way. Was recomended by friends, who have been here several times, also for 3 months. Very nice sunsets over the bay, a very good barbecue with fresh fish and gigant scrimps every night, a good bar with layedback music. And a swimmingpool, if you prefer, but the beach is great. There is also a reef 50 meters from the beach - it is not great but has some nice colourfull fish.

We where here 3 years ago (2010), and the prices has gone up here - as well as in most other places. Beachfront bungalows (in the sand) is 2.500 bath and lowest price in the back area is 700 bath. The bungalows have all airconditioning or fans, a terrasse, bath, and some also have a hammock - if your don't, then buy one in town for 350 bath or so - it is great with a cold drink and a view to the sea.

You can also find bungalows of lower standard elsewhere from 300 bath, but then you must realy be backpacking.... if you want to find a more secluded, more quired or cheaper area, it is altso a great place to be, while you explore the island on a motorbike (200 bath a day - and drive carefully).

This end of the beach is more quired, and in the other end you find more life, music, a hotel with good standard - and higher prices.

They serve Thai-food as well as steaks ect. Thai dishes from 200 bath, and a steak for 350 bath.

The staff is a story in itself. If you want "yes sir" waiters etc., you should not go here. Things are done in the Thai way, and they show a lot of personality and humor. If you expect "yes sir" waiters, you will find them rude, and you should stay at a big resort with international standard (with prices times 5) - and maybe you should not be in Thailand at all ? We like them a lot, know their names, and they also remembered us from 3 years ago. They are very helpfull and do a high - but Thai way - service, nice.

It is very clean and neat here, the bungalows are cleaned every 2. day, the beach is cleaned every day, and the pool is clean to.

The place is highly recomendabel, if you don't want international standard or backpacking standard, and we would like to come here again anytime.

Room Tip: Book in adwance, if you are here in the highseason - december to marts (included)

We just got back from an amazing trip to Thailand and we spent 4 nights at Sandy Bay. We were a group of five, with three in one bungalow and myself & my boyfriend in another. We had a great, basic bungalow right on the beach. Haad Yao is a beautiful, quiet beach that looks exactly like a postcard! There's also some lovely places to eat- I recommend getting seafood BBQ and going to highlife for breakfast. The suit guy next door to the resort is a legend and you can get a relaxing aloe Vera massage out the front.
The downside is sadly the attitude of some of the staff. Danny and Boom Boom (if that's his real name!) are friendly and will let you play from your iPod on the beach bar. However the lady that runs the show is very rude. We decided not to eat at their resteraunt as we were consistently overcharged- so make sure you check the bill, not just the final total. Also one of our group was yelled at by 3 separate staff when there was confusion about what she'd ordered for breakfast. And check what price you are paying for a ferry ticket and transfer. We were overcharged and persistently asked to pay for a transfer when we got to Koh Samui. When we arrived at the port, there were clear signs stating that our ferry ticket included a transfer at the other end- something the manager would have been aware of. The sum of money is small (would have been 500 baht for nothing) but it's the principle.
In a nutshell, I'd come back to Haad Yao beach but stay at a different resort.
