Buritara Resort & Spa at Koh Phangan
Ranked #73 of 137 Ko Pha Ngan B&B and Inns
Reviewed 6 January 2013

I found buritara to be quiet and relaxing - a nice contrast to the rest of the island. The pool was amazing and we spent a lot of time in it. The rooms could probably do with some renovating, but the air con was really good. Had a power outage one night but was sorted by the morning.

The restaurant is probably not worth going to, I would highly recommend the restaurant just up the drive called 'Belvedere'. The food and the view is perfect.

Buritara is quite a drive from Haad Rin if you're taxi-ing, I would recommend staying somewhere closer if you're just on Koh Phangan to party, but Buritara is quiet and relaxing and the staff are friendly.

I don't know how the price compares with other properties on ko phangan but we booked direct with the resort (via email) and got a nice pool villa closest to the beach and next to the pool for thb 1,500/night w breakfast, high season; all the other poolside villas were also occupied. Well worth the money in my opinion.

Kitchen is so-so. Simple thai dishes are good. Breakfast not so. The property is where a small river empties to the sea. Charming but it is taking them forever (the local gov't) to reconstruct the bridge to town. We had to take the long way all the time or swim across the estuary (fun) as a shortcut.

My friend and me made the big mistake and prebooked the hotel online. First of all: When you visit any islands in Thailand, do NOT book your hotels on the internet! You will pay around 30% more if you do... we've been there over Christmas and even during that "peak season" there are lots of free rooms available.

LOCATION: We arrived in Koh Phangan in the evening and had trouble to find the hotel. The taxi driver didn't know it at all and we had to show him on the map where we wanted to go (the hotel is located at the beach in the north of the island, quite far away from the harbor where you arrive and also far from the town with all the bars, restaurants etc.). The beach in front of the hotel is not that bad the only problem is (what everyone really should know, especially when arriving in the dark) that the hotel is seperated from the rest of the beach by a small river. And belive me, it is not easy to find the bridge in the dark (nor is it in daylight I guess). It took us over an hour to get there...To reach the hotel itself you'll also have to drive over some very, very steep hills that are not illuminated at night. Do not even think of renting a motorbike and driving that street at night. Unless you like to spend all your holiday "imprisoned" in the hotel I recommend to look for a different one.

HOTEL & ROOMS: We booked a cottage and had high expectations. For the price of 1800THB per night it had to be a good hotel, right? Well, it wasn't. The rooms are quite worn down and need refurbishment. Spots on the wall, in the first room we got the light was flickering and there were ants coming out of the power socket. Hm... The second room we got was alright and clean. Still, the rooms are nothing special and not worth 1800THB per night. Next time I visit the Island I will get me a small bambus-hut for 500 THB per night and I will have the same standard room I got in the Buritara Resort.
Also: if you still consider choosing that hotel, bring a flash light for the night. There are small paths leading to the cottage and the bungalows. But as there is only very poor lightning at night you will maybe risk falling over a rock and hurt yourself.
The swimming pool looked quite nice but we didn't use it since we wanted to explore the island.

STAFF: The staff really tried their best and was friendly and helpful... except maybe the lady at the check in. Guess she don't like her job.

CONCLUSION: I really don't know what's going on with the owner of this hotel. It looks like he or she doesn't care much for his resort. We got the impression the organisation between the staff does not work very well. The location is aweful - as described above. Please look for something nicer (and cheaper!). We learned that in Thailand you really don't have to pay a fortune to get a nice, simple and clean accomodation.
