“what a beach”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 June 2012

i had seen reviews saying this beach was messy and stank of petrol. this may be so during or just after the full moon madness,i dont know, but we left 1 week before and it was one of the best beaches i have ever been to.stunning.not a great deal going on in the area outside of the full moon but well worth a weeks visit.

“beautiful beach and big full moon party”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 March 2012

we went there before the party and spent the whole day. It's a very nice tropical beach surrounded by forested hills. The water is warm, clean, beautiful, it's nice to spend one or 2 half day here.
We ate a good cheeseburger at a restaurant showing Family Guys the whole day, it was funny...
Then we waited for the Full Moon party, if you are already there before 9pm, you don't have to pay the party fee of 100 baht.
Thai alcohol vendors arrive on the beach at the end of the afternoon and prepare them self for the night. Of course we bought the alcohol in the shops behind to make it cheaper.
One of the main attraction is the rope on fire that people have to jump. It's funny to watch but seems a bit risky...one guy received it in the eyes and went to wash it in the sea, maybe too late...so take care, wear glasses maybe.
Then the trip back to the hostel was funny with the taxi going like a formula 1 pilot on the hills in the middle of the night...

“Everything you've been told and more”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 March 2012

Haad Rin is the site of the infamous Full Moon Party, an enormous rave on the beach that is about as close to complete lawless anarchy as I've ever witnessed. Yes, it's a wild and crazy party all right, just as they said it would be, with people getting trashed and trashing everything in sight. Half of my time there was alright, the other half was a nightmare, breaking up a sexual assault in progress and walking barefoot through raw sewage flowing through the streets while escorting the drunken perpetrator to the disinterested authorities. Yep, it's not a night I'll forget.

Aside from the general grossness of the location the party has it's moments at least... and if you stick to the north end near Tommy's or up on the elevated bars at the end of the beach you'll avoid the worst of it (and hear some of the better music IMO). Zoom is also a good spot to catch some killer beats. Most of the other beach bars don't trouble themselves with a decent sound system. It's not like people even care; just about everyone is there to get wasted and pass out in their own vomit.

I won't say it's worth seeing just once... I won't even say that if you're on KP anyway you should check it out... but if you do, be smart about it. Don't stay there, don't bring valuables, and don't even think about riding a motorbike over the notorious "hill of tears"; catch a songthaew from elsewhere on the island. If you're going to do FMP take it easy and stick around until sunrise... that, at least, is true beauty unspoilt by human hands.

When it's not Full Moon time Haad Rin is just like any other tourist trap in south Thailand... only more garish and tacky. The only restaurant I would frequent again is Paprika--everything else I sampled was overpriced garbage.

Finally, watch out for the broken glass on the beach! The locals make a half-hearted attempt to clean the place up (this is nominally what the admission charge to FMP pays for) but anything buried isn't going to be dug up until the sands shift--and I certainly saw plenty of jagged shards laying about two weeks after the chaos.
