“nice place, shame about the thieving staff!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 July 2009

very basic but in a pretty good location on the beach. did have quite a big problem though when we went out for the night, locking our backpacks up with padlocks and leaving our ipods and cameras in there. we came back later that evening to find the door was still locked, but when looking for our stuff we found that somebody had used a spare key to get into the room, used a knife to rip open our bags, and taken our ipods, cameras, clothes and quite a lot of other stuff. went to speak to the reception staff the next morning and they were very rude to us, accused of us lieing, and then tried to charge us an extra day for not checking out before 9 am! was a shame as we liked the place and would have recommended it were it not for the staff robbing us! you can get nicer, safer accomodation haad rin for quite a bit cheaper!

Myself and my boyfriend stayed here for three nights the weekend of the full moon party. We are backpacking for a year so are on a tight budget and this was our reason for staying here. We had rang ahead to see if anything was free and were told they had a bungalow for 300 Baht per night. When we arrived my boyfriend went to check out the room while I waited with our bags. He came back saying it was very basic but fine. When we said we'd take it the woman at the desk told us a beach room had just become available if we'd like to see it but it was 600 per night. Again my boyfriend went to check it out. He came back to say it wasn't much of a difference but slightly bigger and of course on the beach. I myself then went to see the first one in the forest. It was awful. You had to walk through some trees up a slight slope to get to it. It was bright when I did this but noticed there were no outdoor lights anywhere. The steps up to the bungalow were rotting, the bed looked ok at a glance and there was a mosquito net but the "bathroom" was another story. It was the same basic bathroom you get in budget accommodation. No sink or mirror, a bucket flush style toilet and a crappy shower hose. There was also a giant hole in the wall of the toilet. I said there was no way I was staying there so we opted for the more expensive room. We stayed in a building with three rooms upstairs and three rooms downstairs. The bathrooms were the exact same as the forest bungalow but had an opening between the head height wall and the slanted roof so you could look into your neighbors bathroom or worse hear them using the facilities. The wall was paper thin and there were holes in it which were patched up with masking tape. The stairs up and the walkway outside the rooms were made out of rotting wood and we later spoke to other people who moved from our room because one of them slipped through the floor due to a broken plank of wood. As it was full moon and we were on a budget we had no choice but to stay.

On the plus side the communal area is great for meeting other travelers and the fact that we were united in thinking the place was a dump brought us closer together. They serve food too. Stay away from anything western but the Thai dishes were ok and cheap. They forgot about my order twice though as the kitchen staff just stand around chatting most of the time. Many of the staff seem to lack intelligence and the understandably stressed out manageress is very rude and unhelpful. Also the reception area closes at 10pm so if you're going out late don't leave your key with them as you will not be able to get it back until the next morning. It is only a few minutes walk from sunrise beach so for full moon time its good but its also away from the party so that you can sleep, although cocohut close by play loud music all day long and into the night too so you might still want to bring ear plugs.

If you are on a budget and really not fussy about insects, cleanliness, personal safety and you also have a torch then I recommend it especially for full moon. The beach front bungalows seemed to get the least complaints from our fellow travelers but they are also the most expensive. To sum up if you are not used to slumming it now and again I definitely recommend staying elsewhere.

We booked in advance and i feel we paid over the odds for what we recieved, which was very grumpy staff and an average room. my main problem were the bathrooms so if your looking for a clean place, its a no go. On the plus side; it had a private beach and was not noisy but also a 5 minute walk to the main party beach.

Don't go there! Avoid an unpleasant experience, like the one I had!

We booked our bungalow a month in advance, and when we got there, tired, after our long trip, the rude woman at the counter said:
"Oops, we had other guests coming in and we had to give up your room". No explanation given..they simple gave away our rooms, leaving
us stranded, without rooms for the full moon party.

What's more, they agreed to give us 1 bungalow (we were 8 people), for a 300% price increase a night. We booked it for one night and they bullied us into paying the second night too (despite the fact that we did not sleep there) when we went to pick up our stuff, by calling out their martial arts friends and circling us. We were forced to pay, unfairly treated, and insulted.

Horrible experience, rude people, robing tourists. Sleeping at the beach would be better than going through that experience again.

Admittedly, I arrived more than a week before the full moon party, so I was given a fantastic bungalow, right on the beach, right next to the resturant- where everything happens. Some days I didn't have to leave the resturant- there were always people there to talk to, the food was excellent and cheap as was the alcohol. The staff, once I got to know them, were great fun and it seems there was a strong contingent of reguals and returnees there, demonstrating how addictive the atmosphere at Leela beach is!
