“The perfect romantic getaway”
Reviewed 21 August 2013

My wife and I stayed 5 nights at a Junior Pool Villa Suite, which we absolutely loved. The room is spacious and very private (yes, that kind of private) and we really enjoyed hanging out in our pool and outdoor bathtub, especially when it rained! The bed is huge and very comfortable.
The views from the reception area are just stunning as you're overlooking the whole bay of Thong Nai Pan which is just beautiful. The garden rooms like the one we had didn't have sea views, but we didn't mind it since we spent most of the day at the beach anyway.
There are two pools in the resort: a large one just above the private beach of the resort. This one features a couple of waterfalls that you can sit under and get a perfect nature massage. A smaller, quieter, one is located above the gym up the hill. This infinity pool overlooks the bay and features sunbeds shaped like little boats that are based in the middle of the pool, so just roll off to cool down.
Breakfast is included and the buffet is extensive with a wide selection of food and drinks, including a great cappuccino (what can I say, I love my morning coffee). The whole resort is built in traditional Thai wooden theme and is just beautiful in any direction you look. Staff couldn't be friendlier and attentive and will go out of their way to make you feel welcomed and at home.

A couple of things worth knowing:
- The hotel is built on a pretty steep hillside, so expect having to use their wooden cars to take you to and from your room. From the reception area you need to walk down steps to the beach which is about three flights of stairs below.
- The hotel's restaurants are great, but relatively expensive. If you'd like to go to other place you'll need to go all the way down to the beach, across some rocks on a small path and then there are a couple of restaurants on the main beach or behind the buri rasa hotel, which is a few hundred meters away.
- The resort is eco friendly and blends nicely into the hill forest. It's important to know that the shower and toilet are located "outside", in the open air, which means you should expect sharing it with other living creatures. In addition, the jungle can get very loud. Crickets have this tendency to wake up at about 5:30am and go nuts. So much so that we had to sleep with earplugs one night.
So, If seeing a mosquito or an ant while you're sitting on the toilet freaks you out, or if you like places that have soundproof windows, This is not the place for you.
- This resort has 95 rooms/villas. So don't expect to be alone at the beach or the pool area. It can get pretty crowded.
- I recommend getting to the resort with their boat transfer from Koh-Samui. It's relatively expensive (about $50 per person) but will save you a lot of time and hassle. Otherwise you'll need to take a taxi to a pier (10 min), then a ferry (45 min, 350 Baht each), then a car or a longtail from Haad rin (30-45 min, and aprox 1500-2000 Baht).

Bottom line:
If you are a romantic couple in good shape that enjoy walking, and if you appreciate being close to nature but also like to be pampered (and don't mind paying a bit extra for it) - this is the perfect place for you. We can't wait to get back!

We stayed at the Santhiya resort for our Honeymoon and were absolutely blown away by this 5 star resort. It is simply stunning, built into the jungle and all made of wood, I've never seen anything like it! We were picked up in Koh Samui and taken by private speedboat to the resort which was great fun and added a 'VIP' touch. The rooms and villas are spread across the hill, so you feel that you have complete privacy. There is a wooden buggy which picks you up and drives you from the main resort, up the winding paths through the jungle to your room - which we loved! You can call the buggy from your room to take you down the hill to the resort and it will be there to collect you in just a couple of minutes, this is a 24 hours service which we were very impressed with. Our room itself was fantastic, more like a suite with a huge bathroom and couch which you could relax on. The balcony was also very big with a seating area and an absolutely stunning view of the ocean. It was amazing to wake up and see the beach and ocean from the top of the hill, WOW! Our room was serviced twice a day, with animal towels and fresh petals left on the bed. The staff were absolutely brilliant, we couldn't believe how many staff there were - it was like a Santhiya army! They were all extremely friendly and attentive, you could lie by the pool on the sun loungers and if you wanted to order drinks and food a member of staff would be by your side in seconds and it would be brought to you very promptly, 5 star service without a doubt. The breakfast spread was varied and delicious, we loved the made to order omelettes. The evening meals were equally as good, we particularly enjoyed the BBQ. There was a male and female duo playing and singing a great range of songs to suit everyone and traditional Thai dancing on another night. We spent many evenings enjoying the 2 for 1 cocktails at the beach bar, on sun loungers with our feet in the sand and the ocean lapping up beside us. The pool is beautiful, huge and clean with a waterfall - there were balls, table tennis bats, kayaks etc available to use free of charge - which was a lovely touch. The private beach is small, secluded and lovely - if you climb over the rocks you reach a larger stretch of pure white sand with bars and restaurants. There is a small village 5 minutes walk away with a few more bars and restaurants. The resort is very secluded and you really do feel like you're on your own private island, you were able to completely relax and unwind but still enjoy a few cocktails and some amazing meals. We found this resort to be absolute paradise and bliss, I have absolutely nothing negative to stay about our stay here, it took our breath away! A perfect Honeymoon resort, I simply cannot imagine staying anywhere better!

Room Tip: Room 434 in the Deluxe Ocean view rooms has a simply stunning view to wake up to!

My brother and I recently stayed at this resort and it was a great experience. The staff and management were so welcoming that you will forget you're at a hotel with complete strangers and feel like you're at home with family. The room was amazing. Lots of space and accommodating to a western lifestyle. The food was also really good...traditional Thai dishes with a modern twist for both taste and appearance. I would definitely stay there again and recommend it to anyone looking to just get away on a secluded island where you can forget about work and truly enjoy the vacation experience of relaxation coupled with the serene untouched beautiful landscape the island of Yao Yai has to offer. I'd also like to add we did some of the excursions and walked about the island...both of which felt entirely safe, which for us was important.

My partner and I stayed here in July for 10 days and the experience was wonderful. The resort is truly beautiful, all wood and built into the jungle. It is true that some aspects of the villas looks a bit dated and could use a new varnish here or there but obviously the climate is tough on wood. The villas are beautifully decorated and it is a real treat to have your own private pool. The breakfast buffet was delicious, extensive choice and good service. The staff is very good here...always saying good morning and seeming very friendly and cheerful. It is true that the beach in front of the hotel is a bit rocky, but we chose to head over to the next beach every day to hang out and also to eat lunch in the first restaurant on the right as you head down the beach. The food there was delicious. We also ate dinner twice in the hotel and it was very good...and yes, the prices in the hotel are higher than restaurants outside the hotel but still within American or European ranges, you don't feel that they are ripping you off at all. We often walked to the end of the other beach to go to the small village for dinner just to have variety during our stay and that was easy to do. The only small issue that came up during our visit was at check out. On the bill, it stated I had a private car transfer from the ferry to the resort at arrival. I had emailed the resort saying our boat would arrive at 545 pm and I understood there was transportation at 6:15pm every day and they said yes. We exited the boat and there was an employee holding a Santhiya sign who took our bags and provided the transfer...and yes, we were the only ones in the truck but we didn't think to ask "Is this the private car or the regular 6:15 transfer?". When I objected to the charge, they looked through the emails and couldn't find where I had specifically requested a private transfer. The front desk person did comment "It shows you left at 6pm and the minivan was leaving at 615" to which I responded..."for all we knew we were the only ones going to Santhiya and it was leaving earlier". The back and forth didn't go on long and they did change the charge, the difference being around 20 euros I believe. so, even this small issue was handled professionally and positively which has made the overall experience at Santhiya a fantastic one!

We stayed at Santhiya the last week in July and had the most amazing experience. After looking online for countless hours, we were torn between the Anantara and Santhiya. We are so happy we chose Santhiya.

The resort itself is incredible. It is big and sprawling over the span of a large hill. It is a very peaceful and calming place and the Northern Thai teak architecture is incredible, with incredible and intricate detail everywhere. Everything was clean and well maintained. While it is true that some of the wood is ready to be re-stained/finished, we thought it actually added a little to the feel of the place. It certainly is not run-down or in disrepair. We stayed in a Pool Villa and loved it. We enjoyed our private pool at least once a day and loved the outdoor bathroom/shower. Our villa was totally private with no one able to see into our villa or pool area. We took advantage the entire property, including the main pool and kayaks in the ocean. We discovered the upper pool later into our stay and fell in love--it was so quiet and absolutely relaxing, with the most incredible floating pool loungers ever and an amazing view.

The staff was incredible--attentive, polite and there to help. We got to know several of them and they were all great people, including the general manager with whom we had a few conversations.

Although the resort's own beach leaves a little to be desired, a 3 minute walk gets you to an incredible white sand beach. We were shocked by how quiet it was. We walked from one end to the other on a hot sunny day and only bumped into a handful of people. It felt like we were on our own deserted island. Just amazing. There are plenty of places to get food/drink on the beach and all of our experiences at the local places were great. We especially like Jip Shop in town--the owners were great and food was amazing.

Our meals at Santhiya were all great. Breakfast is simply amazing with an international spread, including fruits, veggies, breads/Danishes/croissants, American/European and Asian items. We kept laughing about how we ended up with breakfast plates with Asian noodles, pancakes, and fruit. While not cheap, the restaurant was priced reasonably for American standards. Certainly, you can get cheaper meals off the resort. But, the quality and presentation of the food at Santhiya was great. As it was our honeymoon, we took advantage of the 'private dining' option, and had a private dinner on the beach which was incredible.

We don't have anything bad to say about Santhiya, although it may not be for everyone. It is sort of an 'eco' resort--with a lot of the resort being outdoors. The bathrooms in the villas are all outside. So, yes, there are ants, mosquitos and the occasional bug and you may come across them while showering or on the toilet. Indeed, one night we discovered that an ant colony had taken over our pool area--literally thousands of ants traveling in a river-like pattern. It was like we were watching national geographic. We called the front desk and, within 10 minutes, the ants had been eliminated... Also, it is on a big hill and things are spread out. So, you will have to do some walking. They do have little cars which take you from the main restaurant to your villa and they were always available and ready to bring us home. We never waited once. Also, if you're looking for a lot of action, fancy restaurants, and nightlife, there's really nothing here for you. It is quiet, secluded, serene and totally relaxing. The town is more of a village with small open air causal restaurants. The final thing which struck us as a little bit weird was that our villa did not have a bureau or any other furniture for us to unpack our clothes, so we had to live out of the suitcase.

Tips: Pay the money and take the speed boat from Samui. You will regret not doing it. It is 100 percent worth it. Go to either or both of the neighboring beaches. Don't wait to leave the property and explore the little town/beaches. Take a taxi boat to the further of the two neighboring beaches. Hit the upper pool to read/relax. It's awesome.

For those comparing Santhiya/Anantara: Anantara is much smaller than it looks online. Yes, it sits on a beautiful beach and the restaurant looked pretty cool (we didn't eat there). But, you can walk from Santhiya in 5 minutes and sit on the same sand and eat in the same restaurant. In our view, Santhiya offers so much more.

For those considering Samui vs. Phangan, we spent 1/2 day on Chaweng beach on Samui and were stunned by how developed and busy it was (and, frankly, a little dirty). Phangan seemed so quiet and serene. If you're looking for a lot of people and a good party and lots to do, Samui would probably be better. If you're looking for beautiful beaches, quiet breezes, and serenity, Phangan would be the better choice.

Obviously, we absolutely loved it for our honeymoon.

We loved the Santhiya. A resort is "made" by its people and from Frederick at check-in to Bow at breakfast, the service was really a delight. Our room (Room 516), the Seaview Suite, was wonderful and romantic. We were initially disappointed when it wasn't exactly as depicted on the website with an outdoor jet tub overlooking the ocean (we had been looking forward to that!) but we ended up loving the room any way. It was spacious, comfortable, with a comfy bed, a nice outdoor bath, and high functioning air conditioning and bug-control.

The advantages: great service, beautiful rooms, awesome pool, gorgeous and romantic tropical setting, proximity to a town with good local amenities.

The drawbacks: the restaurant isn't great and rather pricey. But it's there and it's convenient and for those reasons alone, we ate there 3 nights...so it couldn't have been that bad ;) Also, the beach AT Santhiya kind of stinks. It's super rocky. But just around the cove (literally 2 minute walk), there's a beautiful white sand beach with a bunch of good, cheap places selling beers and yummy foods for lunch and dinner. I would also add to be a bit wary of the excursions run through the hotel. We did the Koh Tao trip and although the snorkeling was great and fun, the "guide" wasn't much of a guide given his complete lack of english. He could not provide basic information about the schedule of the day, the rules for the snorkel sites, or anything else. His english was MUCH worse than the average waiter in the restaurant, which was frustrating given that we spend USD120 per person on the excursion.

Words fail how good this hotel is.

We arrived by road here (not recommended!) and were greeted by the lovely staff and brought to our own little villa. We were shown around and all I can say is we didnt pick our jaws off the ground for ages. Our own private pool, outside bath, beautiful room, outside rain shower. Everything would could have wanted and more!

The staff are incredibly friendly and are always at hand to help out.

The breakfast was buffet style and abundant!

We had the buffet BBQ one night and ate in the beach side restaurant, both were excellent. I would highly recommend the cocktails!

The main pool is cold which is lovely to cool down in when sun bathing. The beach is so clean and private but honestly the main pool was so good we didnt even use the beach.

Expect to pay Western prices for everything, which is a shock when you see how cheap everything is in Thailand, but its what you expect in these 5* resorts.

From start to finish our trip was idyllic! I would recommend it to anyone for a bit of luxury.

Room Tip: The Villas are a must!
