“Nice resort on a great beach”
Reviewed 25 January 2009

This is the second time we have stayed at Long Bay Resort, the first time back in 2003. So we knew what we were getting.

The resort is located on one of the very best beaches on Koh Phangan. Its about 20 mins from the main pier and well away from the rave / full moon party locations of Haad Rin. This makes it ideal for people who want to get away from it all and chill out. The area has not changed much in 5 years and still remains probably one of the most laid back and relaxing beach / islands in Thailand. Its much more relaxed than Samui, yet not so diver orientated than Koh Tao.

The beach is lovely and there are dozens of great bars and restaurants only 5 mins walk down the beach. We just loved eating out at night and chilling the time away.

Resort wise its probably the best for the money in the area. The rooms are nice, you have all the things you need (hot shower, aircon, big beds, TV and sat channels etc.

The pool at the resort is fantastic too! Its ideal for families and for romantic couples alike.

All in all I would recommend this resort for someone looking to relax and get away from it all, yet still have good facilities.

The place to be Koh Phangan!
Located in the amazing bay of Had-Yao, this is a beautiful and friendly resort.
This very well maintained garden hosts some very cosy villas and bungalos just seconds walk from the beach.
The reception staff are very friendly and helpful.
The restaurant is fairly good and its staff are amazingly nice.
We came to Long-Bay for a couple of days and left after 11.
We will surely come back.
Highly recommended!

We spent 3 nights in a deluxe room by the pool (paid 2300 Baht per night including breakfast). The hotel will come and collect you from Tong Sala for 150 Baht per person. I must admit that when I saw the reception area, I thought we had been taken to the wrong hotel as it did not look the same as on the pictures shown on the website (not at all!). We were in the right hotel and once taken to our room, it was fine, looked almost like on the website. The pool area is nice but was crowded with families, and lots of kids, so not quiet nor relaxing, but great if you have kids. The room was clean but a few amenities were missing. We were promised Satellite TV but the only channel available was HBO, that's it! Now, I know that TV is not the main focus when you're on holidays, but in a place like PhaGnan, which is prone to rain and storms, you might need to watch it once in a while. Also, there was no wifi, or not Internet at all in the whole resort. Overall, the staff was unhelpful, especially for booking boat tickets, they just won't do it for you, highly unusual in Asia. Now to the worst bit, the restaurant. I have never, ever, tasted food so bad as in their restaurant, everything from Thai food to international food tasted just foul and I suspect not very fresh... Breakfast is free but totally appalling. To be fair to the restaurant though, the food was rubbish in every place on Haad Yao, apart from a place of which I cannot remember the name (it's big, red and on top of the cliff near the "high life" resort). In short, a bit disappointed.

We chose to stay at Long Bay Resort at the very last minute while on the ferry to Phangan. We were not entirely sure what to expect from the resort so we made a booking for just one night in a Standard Garden Bungalow to try it out. By the way we were checked in you knew right away that this place had a professional management and trained staff to go with it. Very correct with a smile at the right moment. The room proofed to be quite spacious with a balcony and shower/toilet area to match. The mini bar was stocked up, the bed was firm but comfy and the practically noiseles airconditioning in good working order. It proved to be the best room/bungalow we would have on our entire trip to Thailand.
Because the Bungalows are seperated from each other (no direct contact with the neighbours) you could feel as if you had your own little secluded Island bungalow.
We had no noise problems as some of the previous reviewers seem to have experienced. Maybe this is because the Garden Bungalows are just a tad more private than the Poolside or Beachfront Bungalows. The Bungalows are all exactly the same size by the way, So maybe your choice should be focused on how much privacy you acquire. In any case we could not detect a direct source of noise to treaten even the Beachfront Bungalows. Maybe things have changed meanwhile.
The pool is of a good size (about 20 metres form end to end) but very deep. So parents beware: mind your children. There is a bathtub-size pool for the small ones.
The restaurant is excellent and offers a really good fish BBQ in the evenings. The service at the restaurant is also very good be it somewhat over the top at times (Yes, my food tastes good, but will you please let me eat first!).
Sure, Haad Rin offers the better beach with its snowwhite sands that hold the danger of snowblindness if looked at without polarized sunglasses but Haad Yao offers some excellent swimming without the hassle of the Hawkers and the noise of Jet Ski's and all night parties. Haad Yao would definetely be my choice and I would stay at the Long Bay Resort again without hesitation.

Although the place looks nice, we experinced continous problems which i feel the need to share with others who are thinking of staying here! We paid for our 1st night on arrival, then ate and drank in their bar/resturant, where they got our order wrong a couple of times. The bills went on to the room tab, the next morning we decided to pay for the next night and settle the tab as recommended in the bar! When we checked out the following day we were accused of not paying previously and they would not return our passports until we paid again, not a nice end to our travels.

I have just returned from spending a week at this resort with my wife and had a wonderful and peaceful stay. I had read and heard reports before I went that this resort was noisy from a couple of bars close by so was quite anxious before I arrived. Things must have changed and/or the hotel must have addressed the problem from any noise at these near-by bars as there was absolutely no noise at night when I was there (and it was during the week of the full moon party when you might expect a few late goings-on!!). I found my time at Long Bay really relaxing and the resort was clean and well run. Some of the staff could do with being a bit friendlier but all in all a great place to stay. Had Yao is such a beautiful beach and the lack of any big scale development makes it still feel like a tropical paradise. Long Bay has a great spot on the beach with coconut palm trees stretching over the white sands, and a lovely pool (if not a bit too full of cleaning chemicals, but at least you know it’s clean!). The breakfast was ok, if a little slow when having the eggs and bacon, but what’s the rush, you're on holiday! We ate once in the restaurant for dinner but it was average and there are a lot better spots in Had Yao (try Tatwan Bungalows on the hill overlooking Had Yao for a wicked Mussman Curry). The walk along the beach in the evening to find a restaurant is a great experience (remember your torch though). If you want to get away from it all but also have a few amenities (good couple of supermarkets close by for nice cold Chang beers and crisps etc) then Had Yao is a great place to stay on Ko Phangan, and you would be hard pressed to find a better resort than Long Bay Bungalows. We stayed in a standard garden view bungalow which was really nice, with lots of room and big double bed. It was just a stones throw from the pool and the beach (Long Bay is not a big resort). I just hope that the developers do not move into the area and turn Ko Phangan into a mini Ko Samui (now there is how to ruin an island!!). We had no problems getting to and from Had Rin for the full moon party. It was good to see the full moon party but to be honest we felt a bit old to be grooving away on a beach to techno tunes (even at 29!!). Overall, Long Bay was a really nice place to stay and I would highly recommend it. One final piece of advice, BE CAREFUL if hiring mopeds, they are really cheap (150 THB a day) and a great way to see the island but watch out for sand on the road (it’s everywhere), as if you drive over it at speed it is like hitting ice!
