fabulous hotel in real thailand. really cannot fault the mandalai. staff were really friendly and helpfull. we had a sea view room and it was perfect. a great view from our bed and bath! the hotel and chaloklum are both quiet, but what more do you want? if you want to be out partying then best to go elsewhere, but we really enjoyed seeing another side of thailand that hasnt just turned into rows of bars like you see in the mediteranean (or phuket!)beach was about 5 yards from our room and about 100 yards away is the clearest, quietest piece of beach we saw on our travels, where hardly anyone walks up and down. it felt like it was our beach everyday. as for the pier - yeh there is a pier close by, but we couldnt see why it could possibly be a problem. we would go back tomorrow if could afford to and could get the time off!!

The hotel itself is a nice place but the location Ao Chaloklum is not. It is located next to the pier.

Rooms are nice.

But what is the best room worth, if complete environment isn´t.

No beaches close to the hotel and a rate of approx. 6.000 BAHT is more than tripple of an A/C bungalow on other beaches with a much better infrastructure and surrounding.

We stayed here in Dec 08 for Christmas and thought the place was great. We booked a beach view room which had spectacular views of teh beach and sea. We were a bit dissapointed that the hotel would not collect us from the Ferry on arrival especially as it says on their web site that they do. The staff were very friendly and especially Saa who ran the restaurant next door where breakfast is served. We came towards the end of monsoon season so didn't get teh best weather and were dissapointed to find that the Mandalai boat featured on the website was moored on teh other side of the island due to the weather and so couldn't be used. The village itself is small but feels like a genuine fishing village. There isn't a great choice of restaurants. he food was good in the restaurant next door. If you're going to stay here we'd recommend spending the extra to get the beach facing rooms as the other rooms didn't look like they had much of a view in comparison.

We arrived at the hotel with a great welcome and coconut drink which was amazing! We booked a garden view room and were not entirely happy with the privacy and size of the room but with some talks and extra money we upgrade to a far better room which was the mountain view room. Everything in the room was fantastic and great attention to detail. From the jacuzzi to the DVD player was fab.

You must bare in mind that Kou Phangan is a small island famous for the full moon parties but other than that not really much to do - That said if you are into diving and all water sports then there is plenty to do. If your like me and just there to chill, this hotel is the best on the island. The staff were great and the most friendly people i have ever met. The food is to die for and very clean and efficient. Prices were resonable and the whole restaurant area is small but cosy, very sheek and modern! The location of the hotel is at the north of the island in a small fishing villiage and great as it's away from all the hussle from the full moon party antics which we preferred.

The full moon party on the island was amazing and so worth the trip to Kou Phangan. We even saw the lovely lady from the hotel there which was great! The whole hotel exerience made it perfect and we cannot thank ALL the staff so much for their hospitality and kindness. We highly recommend this hotel and not just saying it for the hell of it. THANKYOU SO MUCH! Will be going back there agin soon.

My wife and I are frequent visitors to Thailand and stayed at Mandalai for a week in late August 2008. We prefer smaller places in areas that don't feel too touristed however aren't hippie backpacker venues, and that's what we found at Mandalai. We booked one if the rooms facing the ocean, the room itself was large and very clean. The staff is friendly and the village is small and doesn't feel touristy. Overall it was a very pleasant stay at a nice boutique hotel which seems clearly suited for couples, not families.

A couple of things to keep in mind, however, that we wish we had known beforehand: There are four ocean facing rooms, two first floor and two second floor. We were given room #1, a first floor room which opened directly up onto the public front deck on which there were almost always people tanning, socializing, etc. This might be good for exceptionally social types, but it essentially forced us to close our curtains both day and night, rendering our ocean view useless. We were able to relocate to room #7, a second floor room after 3 nights which was much better for us.

This leads to another point: There isn't a lot of space around the hotel to suntan, etc. There were a total of 6 deck chairs, all of them on the one deck directly in front of two of the most expensive rooms. There are no deck chairs around the pool (not really enough room for them). We had to get up by 7am to get a couple of deck chairs or else we would have had no place to get sun. The beach is pretty narrow but certainly large enough to lay out on. The management could easily invest in some cheap plastic loungers and put them on the sand and resolve a big issue in our opinion.

As is often the case, there was some difficulty communicating specific needs to the staff because of language. When the jacuzzi in room #1 spit out disgusting sewage smelling water (we're presuming it hadn't been used because even with the blinds closed we were concerned people could see us), we couldn't get the staff to do anything about it. Same goes for the fact that our refrigerator smelled really strongly of fish, so much so that it tainted everything we put in there, but we couldn't get anyone to clean it out. Believe it or not though, these were pretty minor things, we really did like the place and even more so when we moved our room upstairs.

Another couple of points: We read that there was a squid processing plant next door which sort of made us worry. "Processing Plant" seems like a strong term here, it consisted of a few tables that people would lay squid on a couple times while we were there. The hotel is close to a fishing pier (it is a fishing village after all), and there is the occasional (we stress occasional) waft of fishy smell if the breeze is right. It didn't bother me a bit, however my wife commented on it once. We also read about how good the restaurant was at the hotel. Not sure if the menu has changed but we don't know where someone came up with that. It's an extremely limited menu and the times we ate there we were not impressed. The pad thai tasted like it came from a package. However there are a few restaurants in town and most serve very fresh seafood, just be sure to agree on price so "market rate" doesn't surprise you at the end of a meal. There is an excellent Italian restaurant in town owned by an Italian expat if you have had enough seafood.

In sum, a nice hotel if you go informed. Maybe a little expensive for what you get, but the nicest place in a non touristy town so no regrets.
