My Sister and I stayed here in August 2012 for the Full Moon Party. We had been warned that the Full Moon party often brings undesirables to the area, who are intent on robbing people who are drunk etc on the beach. However, with all horror stories there are also good times, right? We weren't going to allow this information to put us off.
So, we decided to stay at The Fairyland Club resort as it was quite an expensive hotel (not that we are rich in any shape or form!). We assumed that the security etc of a pricier hotel would give us peace of mind.
We had booked our stay online, and upon arrival the extremely surly faced Receptionist claimed she had no record of our booking. She was adamant that we had not booked. It only when we insisted that we had indeed booked and paid for the room that she magically produced a sheet with our booking details. Apparently as we had booked using Amex it hadn't been processed as they "Don't take Amex". So, after sorting out alerternative payment, we checked in.
The room itself was 'so so', definitely not worth the money. Very basic, and quite hard to get to as it was quite a walk through a hilly and unkempt area. Lucky we are are two young (ish!) women who are fit and healthy so it wasn't a real issue.
That night we were really excited about going out. After getting ready to go, we ensured that we locked all our valuables in the safe in our room. Our passports, cards, money (apart from 2,000 bhat cash each which we had on us for the evening), and my sisters brand new camera. We purposely ensured that we didn't bring anything valuable with us out, as we were heeding the warnings about possible robberies on the beach etc.
After a great night out, we returned to the room and woke up the next morning to get ready and pack as we were heading back to Koh Samui. It was then that we realised that the room safe was open and everything had been stolen!! We couldn't quite believe it as there was no sign of a break in. When we returned to our room after our night out we opened the door with a key, it was still locked as we had left it.
The safe has a key pad code facility that we had been using. It also has a lock where the master key goes in to open it. We had not been given that key. The cover of the key lock was on the floor. So, it was obvious that the safe had been opened using a key. An inside job it seems.
In a panic we ran down to reception to tell them what had happened. The same stoney faced receptionist was there who said "I am checking out these people, be quiet!!" I was so shocked at her attitude! It was as though she didn't care one bit, and was angered at the fact that I had dared to interrupt her and speak about what had happened infront of other hotel guests.
When she finished with the guests, she finally turned her attention to my Sister and I. She then had the audacity to claim "We saw you on CCTV last night and you brought boyfriends back, so they must have stolen your things!" I couldn't believe what she was saying. It was an absolute lie, my Sister and I had come back to the room together..without additional 'boyfriends'. She was suggesting that we had picked up a couple of men that night and it was our fault we had been robbed.
I was furious, and demanded that she showed me this CCTV. After much pressing of the issue, she eventually admitted that the CCTV was not working. So her story about us with random men didn't hold up to much after all. We asked her to call the Police and she point blank refused to do so. By this point my Sister and I were totally distraught as we weren't being listened to or helped one bit.
The staff came up to our room and had a look around, talking amongst themselves. We insisted that it must have been someone working in the Hotel as a key had been used. Also, there were no signs of a break in. This fell on deaf ears, they looked at me as though I had two heads.
We had to go to the Police station ourselves to report this incident. A written report was issued for insurance purposes. After our Brother wired money across to us , we then had to fly to Bangkok to get an emergency Travel documents to travel back home. Spending two days going back and forth to the British Embassy is not fun at all!
As you can imagine, our holiday was absolutely ruined. I have been to Thailand many times before, and have never experiences such a cold and callous attitude by Hotel staff.
I would strongly warn everyone against staying at this Hotel.
