Cool and quiet beach, 5 restaurants with nice food, no annoying party tourists, stunning lookouts, a huge house pig - I think one of the last real places to relax in Thailand - enjoy it even if the ride to get there is an adventure and the standards are simple...

Loved the beach and how isolated it was - feels very calm and undeveloped compared to the rest of KPH. Our bungalow on the rocks was pretty awesome with a nice bed and balcony but a few drawbacks included a bizarre bathroom (look at the pictures - the rocks kinda hurt your feet and don't drain that well) and the electricity goes out during the night (maybe around midnight-5am), so the fan goes off, stuff doesn't charge, be aware of that!

It's a nice location though and the bungalows on the rocks have cool views. There is a restaurant up around the top (climb upwards and follow the signs) that has great papaya salad and thai food, but sometimes the power goes out...

Overall, it's not as cushy as other places on the island but definitely worth it for the cool, less developed location, also the price was really reasonable!

Room Tip: Bungalows on the rocks are pretty cool, probably can't get those elsewhere! But be ready to clim...

I stayed at here twice during a week to visit friends who were staying here.
The owners are friendly & helpful.
I stayed in two different bungalows , a 500 baht double that had a nice bathroom & comfy bed. The Only bugger with this bungalow was finding ones way once darkness arrived with very poor path lighting & lack of sunlight during the day due to it being directly under another bungalow and the over grown surrounding undergrowth.
The other was a 800baht family bungalow with one double bed downstairs & two small small single beds upstairs. All beds had mozzie nets which was imperative as the bungalow only has shutters. The ground floor balcony shutters were impossible to secure due to the latches being either broken or misaligned. Luckily I had a heavy duty cable tie to secure them from the inside whilst I was beaching it during the day.
Another issue was most of the path light bulbs & bungalow light bulbs were blown. Thankfully most of the surrounding bungalows were empty so i could borrow light bulbs to bring light to the path & my bungalow :)
This bungalow was located on the rocks at the seas edge with an awesome outlook. It even had a huge beautiful 1 metre long lizard wondering about (Don't fear it's harmless & more scared of us)

We really loved our stay at Mai Pen Rai, we just wished we'd stayed longer!
Set in an idyllic bay it really was what we'd hoped the island experience would be like in Thailand, sadly other islands have become over developed.
We stayed in a beach bungalow, only 50 yards away from the sea. The accommodation is basic but this was what we were looking for, it has everything you need, and when you're staying in such a beautiful place you won't be spending anytime indoors apart from to sleep.
All of the staff are really nice, helpful and laid back which all helps create a really relaxed atmosphere.
The food and drinks served are also excellent.
If you want to wake up on the beach with the sea on your doorstep then you really should go.
I can't wait to go back.

I stayed 5 nights in Than Sadet at Mai Pen Rai Bungalows. I stayed in a room on the rocks. Normally I would have stayed on the beach, but they were on the process of knocking down the old bungalows and rebuilding them. The new ones look as though they will really comfortable and are a big improvement on the old. It was so quiet and I felt so lucky to be visiting in low season. I would definitely visit again, it is so beautiful here, waterfalls are lovely and there are amazing iguanas in the river that look like crocodiles. The staff are sweet especially Pen who works very hard. If you don't want to go anywhere else this is a perfect place to stay but if you are the type that likes to go out and explore other places, it can be expensive getting taxis, so best to stay put like I did.

After staying on the very busy Koh Tao, we arrived at Mai Pen Rai and breathed a huge sigh of relief! This felt like going back in time to what we had hoped to find in other parts of Thailand, now sadly over developed. Here is a small piece of paradise, with a very refreshingly laid back, friendly atmosphere, set in a National Park, a wonderful place to go back to nature! We stayed in one of the beach bungalows, which was a very clean, simple structure, and as I'm always worried about mosquitos, we had taken an extra mosquito net, and a coil to burn, and werent bitten once. The beach is beautiful, the perfect setting for sunning, swimming, and relaxing. Everyone working here was very helpful and the food and cocktails were delicious, we just wish we'd had more time to stay, relax, and to explore the surrounds. Being woken to the sound of the waves on the shore from our little beach bungalow is an unforgettable, amazing experience!

We absolutely loved this place, infact we stayed 3 days longer than we planned. Very remote and quiet, as its states, feels like your on a private beach! We have travelled all over Thailand and this is one of our favourite places. We first had a hut right in the bay, up some stairs, beautiful, but we wanted to be on the rocks, which was no issue for us to change, the staff were brilliant and showed us a couple of huts we could chose from. We decided on one well out the way, right round the corner, through a little cave, a nice little adventure everyday. We had brilliant sea views, and felt like had the island to ourselves, even though they were fairly full at the time. People whinging about the walk with rucksacks is abit silly as the staff take all the bags if you want them to, infact they generally insist on carrying your belongings, and never expect a tip. All the food we had was excellent, the best food on that stretch of beach by far, although Plaa's is also very good if you can handle the stairs! As for the lack of power...it is very remote..and they actually have a generator so it never effects the kitchen, good quality food all day long, maybe a little overpriced, but its the same as all the Islands, still a hell of alot cheaper than back home! My girlfriend slept better here than anywhere else, we had a nice sea breeze, and yes its frustrating a little that the power isnt on at all times....but you are in paradise! For the price people expect way too much, it was 650 baht a night, so thats about £12, you couldnt get anything for that in Europe. They are currently building new aircon rooms on the beach aswell, although we dont really like aircon as it gives us a cold! But each to their own . We will deffinatley be back, really enjoyed ourselves and were sad to leave but had to do visa run. The staff were brilliant, all in all a great place, needs a little TLC, but im sure they will get to that when the new builds are done.
