“Great Stay......better than expected!”
Reviewed 21 January 2010

We stayed at Phuttachot for five nights over Christmas and although a little worried after reading some of the reviews on this website, we were pleasantly suprised.

Firstly, if you are expecting 5 star accommodation at a 1 star price, then don't stay here. If you are afraid of taking a leisurely (no there is not a giant hill to climb, the hotel is at the base of this)10min stroll from town, then don't bother. If you like to have a whinge about small details that are quite common in Asian hotels, stay elsewhere!!!!!!

We arrived and were met at the chaos of the pier! We followed one of the guesthouse staff as he pushed our baggage in a makeshift trolley to the guesthouse. At checkin, we were greeted with a lovely lady and her cute little son...she spoke very good english and was very helpful.
Our room was very clean, the furniture is all wood and added to the charm, there was also a TV and small fridge in the room. The bathroom was clean and all in one room - open shower, toilet, sink etc. As with the rest of the accommodation we stayed in throughout Thailand, this seems to be the norm. So what if the toilet lid gets a bit wet. Get over it! Maybe the mattress was on the hard side....so were other hotels that we stayed at. If you want a top of the line mattress in your room, go pay for a 5 star hotel.
The balcony overlooks some new bungalows that are being built......incase some of the past reviewers have forgotten, this island was devasted during the tsunami, and building works are a common site on Phi Phi to this day. It's not a big deal. The otherside of the hotel is backed by ramshackle sheds that just seem to be housing wood etc. You only see this when you walk to and from your room after being out exploring for the day..so stop whinging!
In regards to security, there is no safe in the room, the doors do have locks and although the door may seem flimsy, we did not have a single issue about this at all. Nothing was stolen, no one broke in. We felt completely safe here.
There is a convienience store a minutes walk from the guesthouse which is very handy for snacks and drinks...and very cheap!

In regards to the apparently disgusting waste water treatment plant....I have now idea what people are going on about. When we first walked past this area I thought it was a garden. It's lush and green and if anything, you occasionaly get a slight smell for a second as you walk past. In comparison to the smells in Bangkok and Chiang Mai, this is nothing. There are some works being carried out opposite the water plant.....as above, the island is still in repair/rejuvenation and renovations/building sites are going to be a fact of life for a little while longer. Just keep this in mind.

Yes the guesthouse is a 10min walk from the town centre. We enjoyed this, it was away from the noise of the bars and restuarants at nightime (think pounding music and people throwing flyers in your face everytime you walk past, trying to get you into their bar/resturant......even more annoying was the fact that most of them were westerners).
As far as the dark, scary walk at night goes.......crap, yes it's dark, it's night time! However, it's very far from the scary, dark road that other reviewers have portrayed. A lot of the locals use this road to walk home at night as well, you are far from alone, or unsafe. Carry a torch if you find it hard to see walking on semi lit roads.

The rooms are only made up if requested before 11am each day. This is a fantastic rule, which more hotels should adopt. Why waste water and energy (when the island relies on generators) to clean sheets, towels etc, when it's not always needed. However, if you want your room made up everyday, you just need to let reception know.

In regards to reception, they were always open fairly late.....and early in the morning. I went for a couple of runs in the morning up the steep hill behind the resort (trust me, it's a lot steeper right at the top!) and the staff were always out the front to say good morning.

We thoroughly enjoyed our Phuttachot and would definately stay here again in the future. We even had a few glitches during our stay...we lost electricity for about 30mins (normal on Phi Phi with everything running on generators) and no water for about an hour, but the staff were extremely apologetic and it was as simple as swapping to another tank of water. These small hiccups would not prevent us from staying here again, nor from us recommending this hotel to our friends and family.

After reading some of the reviews on this website before leaving I was a little paranoid about what we would be walking into to. We were delighted and extremely suprised at the hotel, it's amazing value for money considering you are staying on an island paradise.

This was the only hotel we could find with available rooms for the busy New Year period. The price was good, so even though we knew it might be basic we thought we would give it a go.
When we arrived one of the staff met us at the pier which was helpful, otherwise I don't think we would have found the hotel. It is a 15 minute walk from the pier.
I wouldn't call this a hotel- more like a big house with a tiny reception room downstairs.
The main concerns we had with this hotel was safety and cleanliness. I have seen dirtier hotel rooms but unless you asked for it they wouldn't clean the room. The furniture were dusty and the bedsheets had some stains on them. The beds are also very hard! You shower over the toilet which made the bathroom constantly wet and unpleasant.
There are no safes in the rooms, nor in the reception. The door did not feel secure so we were quite worried about leaving our belongings in there, especially as anyone can walk in from the street and there is no receptionist present after 7pm even though they are supposed to stay until 10pm. So if you loose your key in the middle of the night, you are in trouble!
Luckily nothing happened to us, but it's worth knowing this before you consider booking.
The location could be nicer because of the smelly road you have to walk down to get to the hotel but it is close to the town centre and to the beaches so it's not bad.
The rooms are quite cozy with a nice balcony so it could be a nice place if only the management would spend some more time and effort on it.

This hotel is situated on the edge of the main village. It is constructed of traditional Thai wooden architecture. Rooms are accessed from the rear of the hotel on individual landings, although there are no lifts at the hotel. From the pier it is a good 10/15 mins walk through the village although you will be met by one of the staff with a cart for your bags.

The hotel is situated just before a sharp incline and close to a local store where you may buy drinks.

Rooms have a bathroom, fridge A/C and TV. There is free WIFI. Friendly staff at the hotel will supply the codes for the WIFI and TV!!. There is no restaurant at the hotel and whilst the staff are friendly thay are also a little horizontal. Rooms are limited in space and the bathrooms are basic. The room did have a balcony which was most used in the morning with the warming sun.

The room was serviced when requested. Bottled water was supplied.

Getting to the hotel you walk to the edge of the village and turn sharp right. Walk past the water treatment field !! to your left and then continue past the rubish sorting / burning site. You will know this due to the stench, although to be fair this is not all the time. Take the next main left turn by the water bottle shed and your there. Whilst walking this in the daytime is OK !! at night it can be a little dark should this be of concern to you.

As I have said the rooms are reached by the rear landing. This is overlooked by local workers huts and a wood store. Also as stated rooms have a balcony which is great in the morning but during the night perhaps bug preventative measures should be deployed. I do believe though that this is a Phi Phi problem and not a hotel one.

Should you stay at this hotel then fresh fruit purchased at local stalls the night before and eaten on the balcony ij the morning is a pleasure and a ++ for your stay.

It should be noted that there is no facilities of note at the hotel. I would not stay at this hotel again mainly though due to its location.
