I camped overnight on Bamboo Island, as part of an organised tour of Southern Thailand. And it was definitely one of the highlights of the trip.
We spent the day visiting various islands off the coast of Krabi, and arrived at Bamboo Island at about 4pm, as the last of the day tours were winding up, and the boats started to leave.
My first impression was that the island was quite dirty (obviously, some tourists felt that if they were paying to visit, they were also paying for an extensive highly cleaning service...) and that a lot of surrounding coral was quite dead and damaged - both, I assume, are resultant from a massive increase in tourism in recent years.
We swam in the crystal clear, warm, shallow water for several hours before settling down to a very delicious meal cooked by the islands care takers; chicken green curry, pineapple and prawn stir fry, and fresh fruit.
During the night, we took a tour of the island, viewing the native flora and fauna, and watching a lightning storm. Although, it was too hot to sleep in the tent, we did try due to the wildlife on the island. But early in the morning we moved to the beach to watch the sunrise and it was beautiful.
I cannot stress enough just how beautiful and peaceful my stay on the island was.
If you get the opportunity, and would love to have your own private island for the evening - stay on Bamboo. One of my favourite traveling experiences ever.
