“worst of the worst”
Reviewed 21 March 2013

this was by far the worst place I have stayed in my 5 week trip to south east asia. first off: the price. its about 20$ cnd a night per person. we stayed at wonderful places all over thailand, cambodia and vietnam for aprox. 10$, so we figured this place would be tops. we get there and the first thing they ask was the entire stays cost. how rude.
after was our mini hike up to our shack, sorry, i mean bungalow. we arrive and notice the bug nets. we were thinking "okay, at least they give us bug nets", but it doesnt matter, as there are cockroaches and salamanders is the bathroom, not to mention the all the ants.
we took off for the beach as soon as we dropped our bags, and when we came back to our room at night, i noticed a stain on the toilet seat. and not really a stain, but more of it being unclean. just needed some elbow grease. we took a shower, but surprise, the shower doesnt really drain. we ended up standing in our own filth.
sleeping was another nightmare. deciding to use the big nets was probably a good idea, if they didnt have holes in them. on hole big enough for me to reach my arm out and grab my water bottle.the placement of the fan was a bit screwy too. it was mounted almost above the door, over one bed, but not anywhere close to the second. but it didnt matter becase the bug nets stopped the flow of the fan. i ended up sweating all night naked above my sleep sheet.
if that wasnt bad enough, the music from the beach about 1km away carried across the water, and seemed even louder. at times the djs would turn the music up even louder, so sleep was out of the question.
the next day we spoke to front desk about the state of our room, and they almost flat out told us that it was us who made the toilet seat a mess. after a couple of minutes of the back and forth we asked if we could leave a day early and get a day refund. she laughed and said no, that was not possible. but i will give the credit for at least trying to tidy it up. they cleaned the seat.
the next night, i found a dead cockroach in the shower being eaten by ants, and another one next to the sink, where i would have left my toothbrush if i could have trusted it to be safe from bugs.
also, we booked a double bed, and were shown to a twin. when we told them that we reserved a double, they said that they couldnt guarantee a double or twin. so whats the point of a reservation if they cant hold it? we had reseved it almost 3 weeks in advance.
and lastly, its called the seaview, but unless you paid even more, you had a bungalow view, with the sea beyond it.
none of this would have been such a big deal if it wasnt 20$ cnd a night per person.
dont even bother with them you can find way better for way less.

Room Tip: not there.

this hotel is at a location far from the beaches and night life that you would think it will be super quiet at night---NOT!!! all the music from 8pm-3am bounces off the ocean water and goes straight to this hotel..we are talking about super loud music from 8pm-3am every day of the year..the staff knows this and offers no refunds and even gives you ear plugs and says sorry to you..the walk alone is a real hike..you need to be fit to do the daily hike just to go into town...and the staff is jaded--you can tell they are tired of tourist...too bad for the music and the steep hike cause the views are pretty good here and we really liked the rooms..our room the A/C kept breaking though.....stay away!!!!

I will say this, the staff at phuphaya are very friendly.. However, the resort itself is not so great. Its kind of run down, very basic.. not worth the $100 a night or more we paid for it. There was no fridge in our room so we couldnt keep food or water cold or fresh.. Air con played up.. wasnt always working, or overworked at points. Our toilet had sewege problems and the smell seeped into our room alot which was pretty disgusting.. I told the cleaner about this, but he just responded with "I know" and didnt do anything else about it.. which was kinda poor service in my eyes. They also did my washing, and put my expensive bra through the dryer by the looks of it and completley ruined the shape of it. I was dissapointed by that.

The breakfast was tasty here.. great omlette.. staff are smiley and friendly...

The culture at Koh Phi Phi is not really my thing. I am young, in my early 20's and that was the general age group of people on this island.. It was a trashy party culture.. very generic western.. I kind of came to Koh Phi Phi to relax and enjoy the beach.. but most nights couldnt sleep due to the loud music coming from the main centre of town. I love to party!! but this was different.. this just seemed like an island for people looking to have a careless fling and forget about existance.. not really my kinda thing. The thai culture seems to have been replaced by trashy western culture here.. i would never ever go here again!

We booked through Expedia and having read some reviews we weren't expecting luxury, but we were still disappointed having paid aud $120 per night

Location - do not stay here if you don't like steep walks with poor or no lighting. It's about 200m from the beach parties which go from 8pm til 2pm nightly and you will hear every thump and beat... They provide earplugs when you check in so enough said

Room - booked luxury air on sea view villa. Room STANK!!! When we complained we were told grumpily we could move to another villa with shared balcony which is not what we wanted. Hammock on balcony broke leaving my husband with a badly bruised back and side . Bathroom was dirty, no fridge to keep water cold, holes on thd walls and floor lettibg in bugs and geckos i could go on..

Terrible experience topped off with rude staff with little English and very average breakfast

My friend and I booked this resort for a 6 night stay through a travel shop in Bangkok at a cost of 18000 baht and it looked stunning on the website. What a shock when we arrived at the pier for our transfer to be faced with a good 20 minute hike, initially through the little lanes of the resort and then up a steep path through what appeared to be a residential area which included piles of very smelly rubbish and stagnant pools of water. The level of steepness increased until we were met by a motorbike driven wagon to take us and our luggage up the final incline to the resort. At this stage, before we had even checked in, our hearts were dreading the thought of having to undertake this trek a couple of times a day to access the town and the beach. By this time it was 13.00 hrs and we were told by the sullen receptionist that we had to wait an hour before we could check in to our bungalow. My friend and I sat on the terrace, and despite the lovely view, had to admit that it simply wasn't an option for us to stay at this location with the steep hill, no lighting on the path and being faced with the rubbish tips and piles of old tyres (god knows where from as there are no cars on the island) every time we wanted to leave the resort. We asked the 'sullen' receptionist if we could come to some sort of compromise ie: we pay for two nights and get a refund for the other 4 nights as we would not be able to make the trip up and down the hill because of a knee injury. We were faced with a completely blank stare and told that under no circumstances was this an option. We reluctantly decided to bite the bullet and cut our losses and asked them to call the Anduman Beach Resort to check availability for our stay as my friend had strayed there previously. This they kindly did and then tried to get us to pay THEM for the hotel with an additional 5 percent credit card charge (it's 3 percent everywhere else). Obviously we refused and a poor young lad transferred the luggage to the another resort. This was an expensive mistake and we should have made sure to have checked Trip Advisor before confirming the booking; we would never have considered this resort based on the mainly poor reviews.

Room Tip: We didn't actually check in!!!

Loved it here ! The staff was very friendly upon greeting us. Helped us with our bags and even took them to our room when we went out for the day. They helped with tours, places to eat and even talked about the island itself.

We stayed in the bungalow which was perfect. Sure you can hear the noise from the beach but it wasn't bad. There is a slight climb to the hotel but its very short and only 5 min walk from town.

We did book one more extra night and we had booked the wrong date through expedia. However, they totally worked with us and obviously switched the date.

The rooms are cosey, clean and close. I would reccomend staying. It really was a beautiful place.

We stayed at around 6 different places on Ko Phi Phi and this was by far the best.

Yes you can hear the noise of the late night bars, but its the same for most places around the beach. There is a reasonably steep walk up from the beach but not as bad as some of the other hotels on the island.

Breakfast was the best value, the view was the best we found and the rooms far nicer than similar priced accommodation.

We had a mosquito net in our room which worked fine.
