We were staying at the outrigger on PhiPhi and I'd been banging on about how beautiful the bay was so I had to take my husband there and talk about disappointing- it was just FILTHY. Firstly, despite the perfect weather there was NO WAY we were going to get in the water. There was so much rubbish on the beach ( plastic bags, bottles, broken glass, socks, flip flops etc) that it was frightening to imagine what was in the water. We then tried to walk back to the outrigger which meant we walked into the hillside next to the bay and things got worse. There were piles of rubbish all over the place, the stench was foul and it was so clear that no consideration is being given to how to protect this place, which only 3 years ago was paradisiacal. Apparently tourists have to pay 20 baht 'clean up' tax - but this money certainly does not seem to be going towards cleaning up. We spoke to 3 other couples from The outrigger who all agreed that the place was totally polluted and not worth a visit. One guy said he walked there from the Outrigger and from a distance he wondered as to why there was no one in the water, then when he got there he understood as he saw how much rubbish was on the beach. We all thought it was extremely sad- but most of all it's worrying about how this could shape the future of tourism in Thailand and this place which should be beautiful. What the locals need to know is that tourists will not go to places that are thoroughly un- inviting due to pollution. There are buildings and hotels being built all over the place but if this problem isn't fixed, they will remain empty.
Come on Thailand- you could be so much better than this.
