“Golden location, homely feel now corporate feel”
Reviewed 26 December 2013

We just loved this resort four years ago and were thrilled to return but found the easy going, can do, is there anything else we can help you with mentality replaced by a one-size-fits-all resort with a lot of new rules and regulations.

No bicycling allowed, no cash advance even if the nearest atm is a boat trip away, no multi-talented staff in the band (rules forbid more than one function) and in general a less than happy staff that seem to struggle with the bureaucracy. It has become a lot harder for them to smile...

The location is magical and the surrounding area our favorite in Thailand, but management has lost touch with what made this resort so different and special from the rest.

One of the other signs of this is the drop in the quality of the food and the sad level of service at the pool. The (expensive) Xmas Eve dinner was exceptional for its mediocre food and only serves to push customers off site for better and more creative local food. We are, after all, in Thailand where extraordinary food at cheap prices is available everywhere!

Our only wish is for Outrigger management to wake up and make a real effort at bringing back the joy of work to the staff, get rid of nonsensical rules and fix the food problem and then watch the real Phi Phi Island Village Resort return!

We stayed for 6 nights in a Superior bungalow which is a slightly larger room than the normal bungalow and is set in the centre of the complex. I had read that the complex was very large and you needed golf buggies to get around however this was not true for most rooms however we did get transported to the Asian restaurant which is on the hillside near the villas and Spa. For these locations it’s probably true that you need a buggy but you can walk everywhere else as it’s completely flat. We had B&B and ate the first night in one of the restaurants and the food was good but not great however this is rate 4 star not 5. We ate in the village the rest of the nights and the best was Pad Thai restaurant. The staff have some difficulty with English however this is the same in many countries due to the number of accents we have within the UK. The heat is punishing in Thailand as you are near the equator and I personally cannot do too much sun so needed shade and it is an issue here hence my rating of 4/5. There is some shade by the pool however it’s next to the kids part and after an hour of cartoons on a tablet from the family next to me I decided the beach was the best spot. There are a few palms that offer the shade on the beach all day however disappear quickly in a morning once people realise they need them. Also wooden sun loungers only extend around the pool and then turn to plastic ones – many of which are broken and dirty. Also they come apart then you try and adjust them or mover them. The hotel was not full from what I saw and I would not want to visit when full due to lack of shade and quality loungers. That said this is a very relaxing beach with no real backpackers as there are some many other beaches nearby, around the island. There is a lot of noise from the bay due to longtails and the flat seabed / shelf which allows you do walk knee deep out quite a way. Despite a few minor short comings recommended!

Room Tip: I found the deluxe pavillion adequate. Sea views are nice but not private enough for me to book as t...

We stayed 4 nights in The Outrigger at the start of December 2013. We were treated well by the staff from the moment we arrived.

Check in is at 1pm, and in our case it was impossible to do it any earlier (we arrived at about 11:30am). Due to the wait, the hotel gave us complimentary drinks and food in one of the restaurants.

The beach is nice at high tide, but at low tide the water recedes a lot which is a bit of a shame (it's still a great location). There are two very nice beaches nearby if you want a bit more privacy (Lana and Nui). Lana beach is a 10 minute walk (just past the village) and Nui beach is in the next bay. Nui beach is INCREDIBLE, a secluded paradise (also great for snorkelling)! To get to Nui beach, you'll need to walk about 30 mins, but it's well worth it, ask for directions in Phi Phi village (it's passing Lana beach, scrambling over some rocks, climbing a small hill and avoiding one aggressive monkey) - you can also get there with a Kayak.

If you plan on doing excursions (tours of the islands, diving etc), we recommend you check the tour agencies in Phi Phi village (5 mins walk from the hotel). We booked an island tour and 5 dives using "Phi Phi Dive Club" and it saved us a lot of money. For our tour and first dives, we were on a Long Tail boat with the captain and our Dive instructor (Lionel) - Lionel is a great guide! This is a good way to see the islands, as it's private, and you can control where you go and how long you stay (as opposed to a big tour group on a speedboat).

If you have time, you can also trek to the top of the island (top viewpoint). It takes about an hour to reach the top, the views are spectacular.

The drinks (and food in general) is over-priced in the hotel restaurants and bars. A cocktail costs around $300 baht (about US$10), which seems a bit inflated given prices elsewhere in the area. We recommend going to Phi Phi Village for dinner as it gives you the real "Island feel". We ate at "Red Tuna" and "Pad Thai" and both were great options, and much cheaper than the hotel restaurants. The breakfast in the hotel is abundant and great quality!

The rooms don't have internet/wifi (except for the Junior Suites), but you can get it free of charge in the reception and pool area.

We gave a 4/5 because we would have liked to have wi fi in the rooms for convenience, a little bit nicer beach and more reasonable prices in the restaurants.

Overall we had a great time at The Outrigger and would definitely recommend it.

...because it is so wonderful!! Almost like paradise.

Upon arrival we were given an upgrade to a deluxe bungalow with sea view. People at the reception were very friendly and accommodating. We loved the pool area with the bar, the infinity pool and the sun beds. We had some great cocktails in the beach bar looking out over the sea.
I would recommend this place mostly for couples/honeymooners. It is very romantic, but also a bit quiet and far away from the noise in Tonsai. We did a dive tour with the hotel, which was very well organised. Good dive masters, excellent lunch, etc. We also did a boat tour that took us to Maya beach and some other islands for good snorkeling.

After three nights here we did not want to leave and I hope to come back one day.

We arrived by long tail boat from Tonsai(approx 20mins) having got the ferry from Railay. From the moment you arrive you are in paradise. We were escorted to reception where we given a cocktail & refreshing face towel. We were then taken to our bungalow(305) which was beautiful. It was like your own little house. King size bed, walk in shower, tv, iPod Dock & tea/coffee making facilities. The aircon was excellent & you could hardly hear it which made a change.
The pool is excellent with part of it being infinity & of course a pool bar!!
The beach is equally as nice with the sea lovely and warm and very clear.
Special mention must go to the village behind the resort which is a must see. Although the food is reasonably priced at the hotel we ate dinner every night in the village. The people are so friendly & the food is delicious & much cheaper. We ate @ Pad Thai & Oasis where the food was amazing - fresh sea bass 400 baht. Also at the hotel you are charged 10% service & 7% tax on everything which does put the price up a bit. We also had a Thai full body massage in the village(next to Pad Thai) for 400 baht which was quite simply the best massage I have ever had.
We also booked a trip round Phi Phi including Maya Bay with Mr Chet @ The Knockout bar in the village. He was brilliant and knew exactly where to take us to see turtles & black fin reef sharks. Again much cheaper than booking with the resort.
The staff @ The Outrigger were very friendly & understood/spoke good English. Shaun the food & beverage manager was especially welcoming.
We were really sad to leave the Outrigger as it was such a lovely resort.

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to the Outrigger Ko Phi Phi. Although in a quiet location and remote setting, there is A LOT to do! This part of the island is secluded and away from the crowds. This is VERY important as the crowds in other areas got out of hand. We quickly figured out that we were in the BEST spot. Our bungalow was towards the rear of the property which as ideal for visiting the "Village" which was to the back of the property as well. As you take the walk to the other side of the island, through the Village, you will unfortunately start to see a lot of trash, most of it from the 2005 tsunami, which brutalized the other side of Ko Phi Phi Island, directly behind the Outrigger Property. I am surprised that this trash has not been picked up at all and people continue to throw trash everywhere. It's shocking. The trash (old muddy toothbrushes and shampoo bottles, hotel room items, etc.) is hard to look at. You will only see this if you walk around the island everyday, like we did. You also need to walk to the other side if you take a private long boat ride for the day. If you go to the Village, there are several little dive shops. There's a young man named Motte that was very helpful. He hooked us up with a long boat guide for the entire day that will take you to all of the dive spots and beaches. The prices are very low (100THB is $3.00US), so we tipped the boat capt. very well. This is the BEST way to go... renting the long boats from the Village. If you want to be with crowds on a big stinky boat, book yourselves on the one from the Outrigger. You'll pay a lot more too. Too many people on the boat. Smokers and people that wear cologne on a boat to a beach (?). Hideous sandwich for lunch. This is NOT the way to go. BUT: The Outrigger was truly gorgeous. That was honestly the best part of this trip was that we stayed there. It was nice at the end of the day to go back to our private, lovely bungalow. Everything in our room was beautiful! VERY well appointed and thought out to every detail. The SPA was AMAZING! We had several treatments several of the days. We really took advantage of the amazing culture and environment and first rate spa amenities. This is a MUST. We had couple's massages in a jungle bungalow that was surreal. Make it a point to book yourselves into the Spa. The FOOD at the resort was FANTASTIC! Every single thing we ate was incredibly delicious. Really. I couldn't get a bad meal. I rarely love everything I order, but that's exactly how it was at Outrigger Ko Phi Phi. We stayed on the Thai menu, of course, but there was a Western menu as well that we didn't touch. The Thai food was VERY good. The service was impeccable. It was my partner's birthday and the maids wrote a happy birthday note on the bed in palm leaves and orchids…..VERY nice. They really did pay A LOT of attention to detail at this resort. This resort is very secluded and quiet, so get ready to relax and get away from the crowds. The water in front of the hotel isn't really "swimmable", so walk to to the other side of the island to Nui Beach. You will climb over a hill with a rope and find a beautiful, pristine beach within walking distance of the Outrigger. If we were to return to Ko Phi Phi or SE Asia, we would stay here again. This was a good experience and I'm glad we chose this resort. Thumbs Up.
