“Thank you Mass tourism....”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 August 2014

visited in 2006. we had to climb in throug a hole in the rocks, make our way through a forrest and came up to the beach, no boats and just a hand full of people.

Fast foward to 2014...
Beach is loaded with speedboats from phuket (40 people in each), hundreds of people on the beach. restaurant/bar, bathrooms. only 20% of the beach didn;t have any boats on it. completely ruined, don;t go!

“Imagination needed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 August 2014

Intense number of crowd, and our tour guide said that it wasn't even peak season then.

Never mind all that though. At the end of the day it's a beautiful place so just imagine it empty. Imagine a little bit more and you can put Leo beside you on the sand.

“Breath taking but extremely over crowded!!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 August 2014

The "hidden" beach was absolutely stunning! It is something out of a dream, the colour of the water, the white sandy beaches, the lime stone cliffs providing shelter. It truly is breath taking! Only disappointing thing was the amount of other tourist there, but I still will go there again on my next visit!! It is a truely special place so of corse it is going to be a main attraction.

“Heaven but for the crowd”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 August 2014

Oh this amazing amazing bay surrounded by hillocks with a emrald blue pool at the centre. This would be an outworldly experience to spend some quiet time here but its toooooo crowded by day trippers and you would not find a single picture without hordes of people in it. Shame! but one still wouldn't wanna miss.

“Grim future for beautiful Maya Bay ”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 August 2014 via mobile

We stumbled upon Maya bay completely by accident! We hadn't seen a map yet so when we arrived I knew it had to be Maya from its reputation. It really does take your breath away. This was one of the only times in our holiday that we were grateful it was low season. At around 11am the beach was still practically empty. It was clean with no litter and photo opportunities were great. Great place to sit and relax for a while. However, I imagined that in high season it's a whole other story! And we got a glimpse of this when we came back at night. Resorts were blasting very trashy dance music and there were fire shows all over the place. There weren't many people around so we did stop for a drink and left with a bad taste in our mouths (nothing to do with the cocktails!). The people who had been on the beach were throwing cigarette butts in the water and in the sand, people were hideously drunk and someone appeared to be openly selling drugs. It got me thinking about the future of this island and thought it was a real shame that something so beautiful was being treated so badly. A shame, really. But hey, I might have thought very differently if I had been 18! And hopefully the 20THB each person is asked to pay when they arrive on Phi Phi will in fact be used to keep the island looking good. Let's hope.
