“Rude staff ruin paradise”
Reviewed 8 August 2014

My wife and I took our two kids to Phi Phi on holiday from South Africa. After extensive research on the internet we decided on Relax as the perfect resort. Well, when we arrived and stepped off the longtail it is jaw droppingly beautiful. Unfortunately too many issues at the resort tainted our stay here. No mention was made of the extensive renovations taking place, so the place looked like a tip, with tables and chairs stacked in the restaurant. There were building materials and rubble stacked around the public areas There was hammering and drilling from morning till late afternoon. When I questioned the staff about this they were very dismissive without any apology. The food was average and the seating in the the restaurant was make shift The rooms are simple, with brown sheets on the beds. The bathrooms are terrible, dirty looking with no hot water only salty cold sea water showers. One feels as though they are charging for everything, the boat from the pier - 150 bt, internet - 50 bt, - a single slice of bread to feed the fish while snorkelling - 20 bt , a glass of hot water - 20 bt and so it goes on. The worst thing about the resort are the the staff. They are RUDE and think they are doing you a favour by attending to your basic needs. In particular a woman called Bee is incredibly unpleasant. Its a fantastic location but the place needs serious management and maintenance done out of season !!

This place is truly a little peace of heaven, the kind of you won't see all too often.
Just don't make the mistake that many other reviewers did; don't book too many nights. They do charge in advance and you'll get no refund.

We booked and stayed 2 nights, after which you'll definitely want to leave. You're sweaty and full of sand all the time, and there's no escape to it. The fan during the night is almost no use at all (since the mosquito nets above your bed is too thick). You cannot wash yourself off properly because of the salt water and in the evening there really isn't anything to do but eating, drinking or getting a massage.

You won't go to the main village (Ton Sai) because hiring a boat is way too expensive, so you cannot even participate on the many tours and activities which are available. The resort only offers a taxi boat twice a day, in order to catch the ferry to Phuket or Krabi.

They do pick you up on arrival (we booked one day before arriving, which was no problem at all, they pick up all passengers coming from the ferries and going to Phi Phi Relax Beach resort). It's half an hour boat ride and I think the 150 Baht fare is appropriate.

We booked the full day 4 island tour for the next day; we were only 4 people on the boat, so it was great. You can also do a half day tour or go shark watching in the morning (we did meet one while snorkeling at Shark Point).

In the evening you just hang out, doing nothing, enjoying the sound of the waves; this isn't the worst thing in the world obviously and it simply feels like peace on earth.

I would recommend this place and I would come here again. Adjust your expectations and enjoy :)

Room Tip: Choose a beach front bungalow ! They're right on the beach, amazing !!

Perfect location, quiet and handsome beach. Beautiful and big rooms lost in nature, with the sound of the waves and an amazing view on the sea. People are very nice. Great restaurant. Book on site (cheaper !!) and ask for their own taxiboats (only 150 Baths). Great place !!
Wifi for 50 baths during your whole stay. Many activities.

Very nice location, but that's almost the only good thing.

At the pier there was a guy with a note waiting on us. After 50 minutes, a boat arrived and we stepped in. Staff boarded the luggage. It was a 30 minute cruise to the resort, very remote and quiet.

Because other things were already described by others, i only write some important things to be taken into account:
- staff is unfriendly. This is a relax resort, not a labour camp. Staff should be friendly and interested. You are welcomed with a glass of water. It is better to serve a cocktail or nothing.
- jam at breakfast was 4 months out of date/expired.
- although located remote, food is quit affordable. 170 baht for scrambled eggs, two slices of bread, coffee and expired jam.
- VERY IMPORTANT: you have to shower with salty (cold) water, what means that your body stays sticky. Every two days the room is provided with a almost unliftable bottle of 15 litres of fresh water to end your shower with, wash your face and brush your teeth.
- Bed is very small for a relax resort, only 130 centimetres.
- The hiking trail to the village is almost a no-no, it is like 90 minutes, half of it on a very steep and small path through the forest. Do not do this in darkness, it is dangourous. There were no viewpoints. From village to relax resort, signage is poor.
- Taxiboat fares rise after 5 PM to 1000-1200 baht due to low tie (dangourous rocks).
- Not so many excursions. However, excursions are affordable. We did an halve day boat trip. Due to weather conditions, this turned out to be the heaviest and scariest ride of our lives.

The location is extraordinary for those seeking a summer gateway, especially couples who love exploring. The bungalow was nicely designed with great view over beautiful beach. There is also a golden chance to do snorkeling, kayaking or taking long tale boats to paradise alike bays. Such a peaceful and romantic island!
Ironically, this place is lacking in fresh water, electricity and other certain essential services (obviously since it's an exceptional island:D) Visitors might feel rather dependent on the resort.

Myself and my 3 kids with 2 partners spend 5 nights at this resort- 3 Bungalows in total
The location is fantastic- the best snorkelling spots on your doorstop!! BUt the staff were rude and soo relaxed. they were busy with renovations( no warning given) the place looked like a Dumping site with furniture packed on heaps all over, building rubble everywhere, hammering from 07h00 in the morning till 18h00 at nite, The bungalows have NO WARM water, cold sea salt showers, NO electricity from o6h00 till 18h00 , no kettles or fridge in your apartment, so EVERYTHING needs to be ordered from the Restaurant, gets Very pricey - its a bit far out with 21-26 year olds that needs some action, NOt recommended ATT ALL

First of all, I have to say this place is beautiful. Straight off a post card, the beach is beautiful and the sea is so clear and great for snorkeling/ kayaking/ exploring etc. Unfortunately, this is about the only good thing i have to say...

We stayed here for 3 nights but contemplated leaving after only a few hours. The huts are stiflingly hot, with holes all over the walls and floors that allow any bug/lizard/crab/beast in your room.

The toilets were disgusting, with no FRESH water, only salt water from the sea that came through a rickety shower head and a tap. Every 2 days they supplied us with a container of clean water that we could use to brush our teeth and wash with... from a bucket.

There is no electricity in the huts from the hours of 6am to 6pm every day. Even when the electricity was on the fans that were supplied made very little difference to how stuffy and roasting the room was. Plug sockets were also loose so the fans had to be wedged in with water bottles.

It is worth also noting that there is no fridge so the 2 water bottles that they supplied each day are hot. Not warm; hot.

The restaurant was under construction while we were there so any food that we ordered we either sat at the bar to eat or sat on the tables on the beach (which was ok). The food was very average with some dishes being quite nice and others being not nice at all (hit or miss). The restaurant/bar closed at 8pm every night and after this there is absolutely NOTHING to do. You are now sitting on the beach in complete darkness, with a torch, watching crabs dig holes.

Staff friendliness was mediocre at best. There was a very friendly girl that worked the bar, and another friendly guy that seemed to do everything, however everyone else was permanently miserable.

It is also totally secluded from the main parts of the island with the only way to get to the centre is between a taxi boat (costing you 300 baht) or an hour long trek through the jungle and searing heat.

If you enjoy being bored out of your mind, roasting hot with no escape from the heat, eaten alive by bugs, completely secluded and unable to sleep then give Relax Beach a visit. Otherwise book somewhere else and enjoy Phi Phi because it is beautiful.
