“Beautiful place if a little out of the way”
Reviewed 16 April 2013

Amazing location, high up in the hills of Koh Tao overlooking the bay with some stunning views. The rooms are split across two levels with the bathroom and foyer being on a slightly raised mezzanine, with a few steps leading down into the bedroom proper. A large french window opens out onto the balcony. The rooms look lovely, clean and well maintained. The food in the hotel is also worth noting. Great breakfast, though not a huge choice, eaten outside overlooking the bay. We had dinner here on our first evening and it was very good, with a fairly varied menu. Beautiful pool and generally very appealing surroundings.
Being higher up in the hills (and amid the vegetation) it is hotter with less breeze and the mosquitos are huge and insatiable. The aircon was not on prior to our arriving so it was roasting, the room tended to get very hot during the day. Internet and television reception were not good but they have DVDs you can rent. The hill to get up to the resort was punishing, it's no Everest but it is a very steep hill to climb on foot and I defy anyone to not have broken a sweat by the time they reach the top. Also, it is very far removed from what little nightlife there is on Koh Tao.
There are a number of good places on the beach to eat and drink but generally speaking, after ten things tend to quieten down. The nearest beach takes ten minutes to walk down to and is very clean and uncrowded. The water is clear and you can swim out at least 300 metres without any danger of being unable to touch the bottom. If you're looking for peace and quiet and happy to embrace island life then I could not fault this place in terms of value for money, service and looks.

Room Tip: Try to get a room overlooking the bay

After having stayed at quite a few places on Kho Tao we stayed at the Chintakiri for 8 nights in Feb 2013. We hadn't booked in advance. We found it to offer the best value for money of all our stays. Highlights: Beautiful view and very quiet location (no party or bar noise in the night - unlike many places near sairee beach), extremely friendly and helpful staff (e.g. in terms of organising transfers, etc.), and absolutely fantastic authentic cuisine (up with the best we had on the island) for a very reasonable price. For breakfast you could choose anything (also multiple items) from the a la carte menu and we didn't have to pay extra! Try the coconut smoothies - they scrape out a fresh cocunut... Only drawback: Yes it's up a very steep access road. But it's a short walk (maybe 150m).

We stayed at Chintakiri 7 nights (jan/feb 2013) and absolutely enjoyed it. The room is in 2 floors with a big comfortable bed and a wonderful view from the terrace. The pool area is great. It's a very quiet place but within 300m you will find a 7/11, restaurants, bars and the beach. For more nightlife and bars I would stay in Sairee. We rented a motorbike for 200baht a day - the easiest way to get around. Fuel can be bought in bottles along the road (50baht per bottle) or at gas stations (much cheaper). We had breakfast at Chintaikiri and it was good. Fresh fruits, various styles of eggs, English/American breakfast etc. and ok coffee. We also ate dinner at the restaurant (100-250 baht per meal). Really good food - the best we have had in Thailand. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay here again.

I stayed here for 5 nights in December 2011 ( sorry for late review ) and absolutely loved the place. Ko Tao is my most favorite place in the world and Chintakiri offers breathtaking views of one of the bays. The rooms are lovely, the food is great, staff are wonderful and the pool area is amazing. The only thing I didn't like was the hill as my boyfriend struggled to drive up it, it's pretty steep and I wouldn't recommend 2 people going up on bike. We managed to fall off at the top! Would get taxi's into Sairee at night which weren't expensive. If you want to party in Sairee then I would suggest staying there but if you are a couple and love a beautiful place to stay then this is for you! All in all loved it and would definitely come back

I stayed here for 3 nights in January 2013 and loved it. All the rooms, including the dinning area have a stunning view of Ao Chalok Ban Kao (bay). The rooms themselves are all very-well appointed and the Staff were some of the kindest, attentive staff I've ever come across in Thailand.

A handful of reviews complain about the steep uphill. You only have to worry if you are 1) old 2) out of shape. If you are neither, forget about it.

The one downfall to this place is that it is not right on the beach (between a 5 & 10 minute walk) and the beach/bay that it is on (Ao Chalok) isn't that nice compared to the other beaches/bays on Koh Tao. Needless to say, you may want to pay a similar price and stay near the beach in one of the quiet secluded bays, such as Tanote Bay.

You get quite a lot for your money at Chintakiri. They are a small outfit but the are friendly. The rooms are nice, the food is good, the cocktails are good and everything is well prices. The Hotels own gardens are beautiful but the surrounding area is neglected.

The only drawback here is the bar next to the hotel. If you are a light sleeper the noise from scooters departing and drunkards chatting my keep you awake if your room is on that side of the hotel.

Room Tip: Choose a room on the South Side away from the High Bar.

If you would like to stay in an immaculately clean, family-owned, boutique resort then this is the place for you. The views over Chaalok Bay while relaxing in the infinity pool made the walk up the (admittedly) steep road to the resort worth every step. The owners and staff went out of their way to do anything for you and the restaurant was competetively priced compared to everywhere else on Koh Tao but served us the best food that we ate anywhere on the island. It was a short walk to a 7-11, pharmacy, yoga studio, massage place, bars, etc. and only a 20 min. walk to Mae Head town or 30 min. to Sairee Beach Village if you don't feel like hiring a taxi but get ready for crowds of people in both places. Better to stay a little further away from the main drag where you hear nothing but the jungle at night, yet is handy to services when you need them. This place offered the best of both worlds and you can always hitch a ride into town with their driver when he goes in for passenger pick-up at the ferry - we did. I would not recommend this place to people with children or if you have mobilty issues but for the rest of us this place was an absolute paradise. My husband and I stayed over New Years and met most of the other guests who were all lovely and friendly. When you're staying at a small place that's what tends to happen - which we enjoyed immensely. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: all the rooms have an amazing view of the bay - you can't go wrong! The higher up you go the mor...
