“Great views”
Reviewed 9 January 2012

My wife, our little boy and our friend stayed at Paradise Zone resort in July, after coming from Phangan. Due to little baby we chose Chalook Kao Bay instead Mae Haad Beach. The resort is really a bit pricey and remote but the views help you to compromise. We only had breakfast at the resort (great by the way) and for dinner we went either do Chalook or Mae Had/Sairee. The transport was always on available and easily arranged. The drive to the bottom of the hill aka beach was free of charge. The beach itself was really muddy and unswimmable so thankfully we discovered a nice quiet beach (Freedom beach) in a 10 minutes walking distance (even less in you catch the tide and walk at the edge of the bay). This one was great and secluded with the shade for little one. All in all we had fun in Koh Tao.

Great place to stay, amazing views from the infinity pool. There is another infinity pool next to the beach which is just for guests. Restaurant served great food. Good value for money. I have never felt so pampered in my life, and was a very peaceful place to stay.
We went as a group of girls, and found out when we got there that 3 people can sleep in a room, so if you're looking to save money know you can enjoy this paradise at a cheap price. I felt like we were on a honeymoon. Would DEFINITELY recommend!

Do not stay here. The rooms that were way overpriced coupled with the expensive taxis from the hotel to the centre of the island made our stay unnecessarily expensive. The send off that the unhelpful staff gave me added another unnecessary cost; when i went to book my ferry ticket through the hotel, the receptionist said that they would have my ticket and receipt ready for me when i left the next day. Despite having multiple witnesses, the receptionist working the following day claimed that I had not paid for my ticket. I asked to speak to the manager but they simply laughed and said no. They refused to give me my ticket and threatened to call the police. A local informed us that the hotel is actually run by the mafia. Not surprisingly they have no contact information on their website and don't faciliate feedback.

We decided to come back to Paradise zone as 3 years ago we had an enjoyable holiday there, in a brand new hotel, with wonderful staff, and excellent food and service.
Well, the hotel is now totally different…
The rooms were badly kept with damaged furniture and aged bathrooms.
The bed sheets had been washed but were full of spots and holes everywhere…quite disgusting.
The baby cot (see pictures) seemed to be 30 years old, full of rust everywhere … very dangerous.
No maintenance was done on the hotel’s structure which looked aged, as if the hotel was already 20 years old.
In the morning we were woke up by security staff’s lowed discussions on their walkie-talkies out of our door, very very noisy.
At night the staff were spending their evening with their relatives in the reception area, eating there with their kids, sat on the sidewall , smoking there and leaving their cigarettes into the decorative rocks that should be there for an esthetic purpose, not as ashtrays. (see picture).
Moreover some of the staff used to sleep during the day on the bar’s armchairs and sofas (see picture) or on the long chairs of the terrace, even chatting together sitting on the sofa of the reception….
Food at the restaurant was not tasty anymore, Europeanized Thai food. Asked for a curry panang, it was just chicken with no curry at all, we tried to explain how it should be, they took our plates back in the kitchen and came back with exactly same food the dish. No way to communicate in English.
That’s our last time in this hotel, as probably in the future it will get even worst if management does not take any action to improve the hotel’s service and cleaning.

We were booked to stay for 7 nights but only stayed one night and that was enough for us. We were concerned with the mixed bag reviews and now we understand why. The pictures on their website must be when it first opened, the reality is that everything is now a lot more worn.

Pick up and check in was efficient however we didn't get the feeling of being welcomed. We had booked a paradise seaview and the only thing paradise was the seaview. When we got to our room, the first thing that hit us was the smell of bad drainage and a musty room smell as if it had not been occupied for a while. We aired the room for the evening which helped a bit. Rather than unpack we wanted to turn around and leave, but gave it the benefit of doubt and stayed one night whilst we looked for somewhere else to stay. I can now fully understand one of reviews mentioning it was 3 stars in rapid decline. Fully agreed with the review. It probably was first class when it opened, but there was no/little renovation since then. The windows were in need of varnishing, TV was old style, lamps still had plastic wrapping on them. For the time we stayed, we hardly saw any staff. The balcony was small with a bath which was worn and did not look at all inviting to have a soak in. We had to walk past another room to get to our room, but unfortunately the curtains in the other room did not quite fit and we could see the other guests lounging in their beds - not pleasant for us or for them.

The place had no care and felt to us it had been left to go downhill. The only maintenance we saw was the gardens.

In terms of location, it is away from the busy area of Sairee and Mae Head, but there are plenty eateries once you get the lift down to the main resort. We also had a look at the main resort and they looked even worse than where we were.

The worst thing was to come in the evening when we got home after dinner to find we had a party next door to us with their blaring music, shouting and laughing that went on till the early hours. They came back and the music was back on again. The thought of having to put up with this for the next 6 days was the final straw.

Breakfast was adequate although nobody actually greeted or served us. We helped ourselves to the food while the staff sat in the corner and basically chatted amongst themselves. The only time staff spoke to us was when they were going to close breakfast.

When we did present ourselves for check out, rather than ask why we were leaving, they were happy to give us our money back. We were not expecting to get our deposit back as it was non refundable and to put it into perspective, we were happy to give up our 50% deposit on the 7 nights to move elsewhere. That was how desperate we were to leave. We then checked ourselves into Jamahkiri. This was when our holiday really began.

Room Tip: none. don't stay!

One of the pricier options on the island, but well worth it. Free transfer to and from ferry, our room mix up ( courtesy of the booking agency, not the hotel) was rapidly resolved.

Large room with balcony and good view, minibar and hotel restaurant and spa prices very reasonable. Enjoyable breakfast, fabulous pool.

Taxi up or down hill for free any time between 7am and 10pm.

If you have mobility issues of any kind, koh Tao is not for you, the entire island is chockers with steep stairs, the taxis are in truck beds, and the ferry over is a tight squeeze.

That said, we loved it! It is a wonderful island. We opted to book snorkeling through the resort, and for the same price as other companies had a smaller, more personal tour with great lunch on a much better boat than many we saw.

Worth the extra dollars.

The owners of this resort need to take some of the money they are making from the overpriced rooms and reinvest into upgrading and remodeling the tired and dated rooms- start with getting rid of the fake flowers. The rooms were very clean but they were dated and had that sour smell from water damage and decay. The windows leaked during the rainstorms. There were no views from our rooms they looked out at the sides of other buildings and outdoor walkways. Yes, the 300 baht diver accommodations down the hill are much worse but I would not stay here again given what we paid.

That said it probably has one of the nicer pools with a beautiful view. However, the restaurant is closed between 10am and 3pm so you have to go down the hill to eat and can’t stay and enjoy lunch by the pool. Also, the local dive masters and instructors have figured out they can just walk up to the pool and order some drinks and hang out for the afternoon. Not a big deal if you aren't looking for a peaceful time, it was amusing to listen to the talk.

The reception staff was friendly and helpful and housekeeping was great.

Also the dive shop located down the hill at the Koh Tao Resort was great... no ego or attitude with any of the instructors or dive masters. You get a discount there if you are staying at Paradise Zone or the Koh Tao Resort. Low key, safe and fun dives. Was impressed watching several young kids doing their check out dives the staff was very patient and thorough with them.

Room Tip: Tell them you want a room with an ocean view; most of the rooms don't face the ocean only a few...
