“Fantastic resort - staff let down”
Reviewed 27 May 2012

The positives: The resort was great, away for the busy town, private beach, beaituful pool..Great villas with beautiful palm tree garden - something you dream about! This is the place you get in and dont get out literally - as you can t walk anywhere.. you have to fact in their restaurant which served decent food. However the only thing that spoiled our vacation was the unprofessionalism and sometimes redness of the staff ( I have never been in a place where staff doesn't say hello or thank you ! ) This is a boutique resort with higher than average pricing. The staff hanging around everywhere, sitting around the beach bar in the morning, during the day and evening! Either there is too many staff and hence they are simply sitting around ( the beach, the chairs in the evening near the pool ) ! To make a point I noticed a piece of garbage laying around near the bar, it took someone 2 days to pick it up, while everyone is simply doing nothing!
Very frustrating when you have to come to the restaurant and ask them to lay the pillows on the beach benches where you can have dinner with sea view.. They look at you like you are inconveniencing them.. This is not boutique style management at all! We just came from Hua hin Centara - this is a hotel you should learn how to manage staff! Haad tien - we felt like we came to inconvenience the staff that simply want a laid back style, we didn't pay 30$ to stay here!
"clean my room" sign was hanging from 6 am till 2 pm someone called to ask if I didn't want my room done! since I got back to my cabin at 2pm to do some work. Why it took them 8 hours?
Check in and Checkout out was quick, no one bothered to ask how the stay was!
Everything in the resort is 10% services charge ( not sure what service ) and 7 VAT...
I will sound my money elsewhere next time, unfortunately staff and service plays a very important part in a resort...

We have stayed in this hotel for 2 nights in May. Overall it is a beautiful place with a beautiful beach. They claim to be a 5* star hotel, which is not true. I would give them not more then 3*. We were greeted by the hotel staff at the pier and taken to the hotel by a truck. ( the 5* hotels pick you up in air conditioned cars). The road was dusty, smelly and bumpy. At the reception the staff were nice and helpful but seemed a bit lost!

Within 5 minutes we were taken to the villa. The room was average, plain and simple. Cheaply decorated. As for a 5* hotel I expected it to be more luxurious and bright. The shower gel and shampoo smelled of a cheap gel (something of Old Spice aftershave).

The beach was nice and clean. The only negative thing was that did not have any umbrellas!

Their main restaurant was not impressive! The food was horrible and quite pricey, plus on top of that they charged 17% charge! The restaurant staff looked confused and lost when asked something. If you have a choice, definitely eat somewhere else!

The most annoying thing was that the hotel staff felt that they are staying as the guest there too!!!!!!! They we're talking very loud in groups to each other, some of them even sat at the table by the pool bar! I mean, if this is a 5* hotel, their should be no staff seen unless when you need them! It was lacking of professionalism .

Overall, it's a beautiful hotel but very poorly run by the staff! Don't think will be coming back as there are more beautiful, luxurious hotels for the price they are charging!

Stayed for 6 nights during May in a beach Castaway Villa. First impression was WOW, this is what we came for. The setting on the beach with the chalets spread out just looked fantastic. We were not disappointed, the service, food and staff made our stay the highlight of our holiday. The room was very comfortable, always kept clean and the day bed on the balcony was ideal. It was that good we could of stayed at least 10 nights. Moe who greeted us at the pier, helped us with all our needs throughout our stay is a compliment to the resort. Don't expect any red carpet but that is not what this place is all about. Do your own research, it's easy, expect the typical tropical island problems i.e. mossies, hilly terrain and prepare for it. Communication with the staff was not a problem for most languages. If you were to complain about this place- you have chosen the wrong type of holiday and that goes with the different types of accommodation at this resort - ask clearly what you want .....it's all there.
Snorkeling of the beach was pretty good and we really enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: The beach castaway villas are perfect - choose 213 to 218 are the most private.

We spent a great week holidaying here recently. The property is all it says on its website and even more. The castaway beach family villa we were put up in was the closest I have ever stayed to the sea, (not counting the over-water rooms in Maldives ) . However the setting and interface between land sea and sky was nothing short of spectacular – a charm, variety and character not seen in standalone small islands. Massive boulders and rock formations with ancient entwining trees splitting the rocks in some places are blended artfully in this resort set virtually in a tropical jungle.

The restaurant had excellent food - the best Tom Kha curry (mild coconut milk based) we have had anywhere.

The snorkelling off the beach was good but the hotel supplied snorkel sets kept leaking. Best to buy a high quality set from the dive shop in the main island shopping area. I found the Nova scuba pro snorkel set very good which was lent by rainbow tours during a full day snorkelling trip around the island.

Karman at the report reception was particularly helpful and friendly during our stay.
Very efficient and good language skills too.

Overall a classy, understated luxury resort – definitely the best available on the island !

My husband and I travelled to Koh Tao, Thailand in April 2012. We stayed at the Haad Tien for 10 nights and it was a great choice on this island. We used TripAdvisor to help us select our hotel. We were deciding between the Jamarhiki and the Haad Tien and actually a TripAdvisor review helped us make our decision to choose the Haad Tien.

Getting to Koh Tao-
Pack light; we took a 3 hour ferry from Koh Samui. You have to handle your own baggage on the ferry and it's usually very crowded. I had a large rolling suitcase it was hard to maneuver on and off the boat as well as to stow on the boat. A lot of people had backpacks, which seemed to be the way to go. Get your ferry tickets through your hotel so it's all coordinated. We also booked the bus tickets from Koh Samui Airport to the ferry pier through the Haad Tien as well.

Haad Tien-
This is a great hotel if you want to be secluded and away from the crowds at Sairee Beach as well as Mae Head Pier. The hotel provides shuttle service at noon and 6 PM to Mae Head Pier as well as a shuttle to Sairee beach for a small charge at 6:30 PM. The hotel will bring you back at 9:30 PM but for those that want to stay in town later there are plenty of taxi options--don't pay more than 300 baht per couple.

The beach at the Haad Tien is beautiful and private and steps from your beach bungalow. The rooms are very clean and well maintained. The bathroom was large, beautiful, clean and very modern. The food at the hotel is good- we had the beach bbq one night and did traditional Thai another night. It is a bit pricier than what we had in town but still good if you need to grab a bite there. The breakfast buffet is very good and had an omlette station and plenty of other choices (fruit, breads, hot foods, etc.)

The snorkelling and kayaking is great off the hotel (shark bay) and you can see MANY sharks! We are both divers but we'd say the snorkelling was sometimes just as good as the diving!

Diving-
My husband and I are both scuba divers and dove through Crystal Water Dive Resort. The dive shop will pick you up via taxi prior to your dive which makes it very convenient for those not staying near the dive shop (i.e. those not staying in Sairee beach or Mae Haad). This was especially great for us staying at the Haad Tien. The prices of the dives are extremely reasonable and include all your rental equipment. We had great dive masters there and had some enjoyable dives. We also decided to get our Advanced Certification through Crystal for a very reasonable price.

Night Life-
The restaurants on Koh Tao are great and very reasonably priced! We ate at Whitening one night, Fizz two nights, Barracuda one night and Lung Pae another night. I'd say our favorites were Fizz and Barracuda. The food and atmosphere were great at both!

Shopping-
Shopping is great on Koh Tao and very cheap.

Room Tip: We stayed in one of the hideaway villas and it was very quiet and off the beaten path. The rooms ar...

We were 5 days in Haadtien Beach Resort.
We like the free shuttle service from the pier and also the check in was quickly. Our first villa was clean, however, was not the air conditioner properly. Alternatively we could switch to one Castaway villa (extra charge) with a daybed, which were also significantly newer and more modern than the Castaway Villas. The bed was very comfortable and the air conditioning super soft. From the daybed out you had a beautiful view of the complex and the sea. The grounds and beach were well maintained and the pool is refreshing and nice, but unfortunately the pool was murky water!
Now the negative points:

We have the staff to what 4000 B tucked away in our suitcases were robbed! Unfortunately, this is only noticed later. Very, very annoying!

Breakfast was modest. Cold pancakes, juice and jam terrible. The eggs I have not even tried.
Just as was the restaurant in the evening for Thai conditions outrageously expensive and also not very good. You have to eat because of the situation no way somewhere else, or have to take the shuttle into town.

We had a cockroach in the room every day?!

Ko Tao is more of a dive spot as a romantic island, we would therefore no longer shuttling.
Also the hotel is overpriced for its performance.
We will certainly not return to the shares haad beach resort

We were in Koh Tao last week and had arranged to stay at a different hotel on Sairee Beach but it was awful. Our group consisted of three women in our 40's who have traveled a lot and like tohave fun but we don't party all night. We checked in to our hotel on Sairee and had no idea that in the days after the Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan all of the party goers head to Koh Tao. Our hotel was full of loud partying until 5 AM outside our little hut 20 somethings. ANYWAY....we decided to move to a nice quiet spot. We picked the Haadtien.
The staff at Haadtien came to pick us up at the icky hotel, they actually picked up our bags and carried them and when we got to the resort they had cool drinks for us and were so so so nice. The receptionist ( a young man from India I think) was so great! We checked in to our room and it was lovely, we stayed in a Getaway Suite. It was gorgeous with a large lounging area outside that had shades you could pull down. The fridge was stocked with water, beer and sodas. We headed down to the pool which is an amazing infinity pool next to the beach. There were plenty of loungers and a great happy hour. Again, the staff was lovely. We had dinner in the restaurant which was really good. I cannot begin to tell you how nice it was to really RELAX and enjoy the surroundings. The grounds even smell like exotic flowers.
We were there when the low tide lasts for a few months so the snorkeling was a little more difficult right off of the beach than it usually is. In other words, you have to swim way out in really shallow water without standing up because the sea floor is covered in coral and big scary urchins. That having been said, there are thousands of fish in the shallow water and we saw 3 sharks in water less than 3 feet deep. Two were smallish (around 1 meter) but the last one was over 2 meters and it spooked me:) There is a dive shop between Haadtien and Rocky Resort which I would NOT recommend. The Dive Masters were arrogant and they took us on the worst dive I have EVER been on, but they are not related to the hotel. In fact, the dive shop rents snorkle gear for $250 BHT/day and the Haadtien lets you use it for free. There is a sign out sheet over by the beach bar. They also have kayaks to make the snorkeling easier in the low tide season.
While diving with a different company, we saw a WHALE SHARK, it was incredible!!!!!
Again, the hotel and the staff were just perfect for us. We felt so relieved when we arrived there and so well taken care of. The breakfast was great and the dinners were nice as well. They run shuttle in to town 3 times a day if you want to leave the resort as well. The staff is so friendly I would recommend this hotel to anyone. There were families, couples and singles. It is quiet but that is how we liked it:) We booked on Agoda and got the Getaway Suite for about $127/night including breakfast.

Room Tip: The beach fron cabins looked really cool!
