Stayed for 7 nights and had an absolutely wonderful experience, from start to finish. The Castaway Villas were spotless, tasteful and roomy. The seating area on the balcony area was perfect for a beer or two in the evening before dinner.

If you like snorkeling, then you won't be disappointed. We went there with this as one of our primary aims, and managed to spend every morning in with the sharks, and then the rest of the day in and around the bay with the rest of the wildlife.

Finally, a special thanks to the staff, particularly the restaurant staff, who showed us nothing but the friendliest service for our entire stay.

We stayed for 4 nights that The Haad Tien in late July 2010. Initially we booked a Hideaway Villa, but when we got there we found we had been kindly upgraded to one of their top beachfront villa's at no charge! A very nice and kind surprise. The room was lovely and new, and the maids did an outstanding job of making up the room each day.

The first thing we noticed when we got there was the superb location.... the resort grounds are stunning (very well kept with green, green grass and lovely coconut trees). The beach is lovely- quite heavenly really. They have a lovely beach bar which couldn't be more quiet and relaxing if they tried. The restaurant also has a lovely ambience and is set outdoors, right on the beach. We only ate dinner once at the restaurant, but we were very impressed with their seafood bbq. We ordered a baked seabass (cooked in foil) to share, which came with pineapple, Thai herbs and a baked potato. The price was reasonable. We very much enjoyed it, but opted to go to Sairee or Mae Haad for dinner on the other nights because there is a bit more happening in town.

There have been a few comments on TripAdvisor about the service at The Haad Tien. We also noticed that at times communication with some of the staff was difficult- some of them don't speak English fluently. We also noticed that the front desk staff sometimes came accross as slightly abrupt, but I am convinced that they meant no ill-feeling, it was just a communication issue. These service difficulties did not bother my husband and I, because we recognise that Jan (the manager) has opted to hire local people and train them up, which is something that we fully support. However, while we thought that most staff really tried their best to please, I do agree that they could benefit from some more formal customer service training to bring it up to 5-star level.

The biggest downfall of The Haad Tien was the limited shuttle services that they provide to the town. They have 3 free shuttles to the town daily, but only one free service back (at 9.30pm). Other than this you have to pay for it, and it isn't cheap. I really felt that for a resort of this calibre (that is in a location too far to walk to the town), that they really should provide a few more free shuttles per day. Having said this however, I wouldn't let this put you off staying here- perhaps just hire a scooter or a quadbike to get to and from the town.

One of the other disappointments was the snorkling tour that we booked through The Haad Tien. They have an affiliation with Blue Diamond Tours and we did not enjoy this day trip at all. Of course this has nothing to do with The Haad Tien itself, except that we booked it through the resort. We were very disappointed with the quality of the boat (we were squeezed on like sardines and had to stand) and the snorkling left much to be desired with most of the coral being totally dead. From what I can ascertain, most of the tour operators are the same and I think snorkling is not the best on Koh Tao- I think scuba diving is the only way to see anything worthwhile. The Haad Tien offers free snorkling gear and I would recommend just using this and going snorkling from the beach (because Shark Bay is one of the locations they take you on the tour anyway, and all the locations were much the same).

Koh Tao itself is really lovely and the little villages of Mae Haad and Sairee are very charming with lots of good eateries (mostly low to mid-range, not so many high-end). I would particularly recommend eating at Whitening (Mae Haad) and Sairee Cottages (Sairee).

All in all, The Haad Tien is one of the nicest places we have stayed in Thailand and we were very impressed. They don't have a pool, but they didn't seem to need it with the beach being so nice.

The rooms are lovely and new, the grounds are luxurious, the beach is one of the best on the island and the restaurant is good quality. Being so new there are a couple of things they could improve on, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to others.

We stayed 6 nigths at the Haad Tien in a Garden Hideaway bungalow.
The bungalow was nice and simple - very clean and cozy - with a big bathroom. The balcony was big - with a great view to the ocean and furnished with to confortable chairs.
The beach is unique - only complain is the many guests from surrounding resorts - who came by boat to - what we expected was a private beach. It is easy to go snorkling directly from the beach - you will need flippers to do that.
The staff is very very helpfull, smiling and friendly - we had a lot of fun in the beach bar together with Sum and her kollegs.
In the restaurant they present very nice and tasty food - served with a smile and a small talk.
The hotel offer transfer to the pier or to Sairee Beach - so if you get tired of the quietness and want to shop - get a massage - or eat something else - we recomend a trip to Sairee.
The management at The Haad Tien - are very polite and caring for their guests. We were meet with a Good morning Mrs and Mr Joergensen every morning.
We will come back soon - but please keep away so we can have this place for us self :-)

We stayed at The Haad Tien in July 2010.
We had an Hideaway Village: the cottage was nice, comfortable and well equipped.
The location was absolutely superb, we had the snorkelling tour of the island and we think the Haad Tien beach is the best one of the isle. You can swim safely, relax and have a good snorkelling there.
If you want to go to the village there is a free shuttle service three times a day. Mae Had is about 10 minutes away from the resort.
I don't suggest you to rent a motorbike: you would find some problems to reach the resort.
The restaurant offers a wide range of Thai and International dishes: the food is good quality and the staff friendly.
If you have any problems don't hesitate to contact Mr Jan, the hotel manager. He is very helpful and efficent.

The resort is right on a nice quiet beach on Koh Tao, which is a rare and special location as the island has very few beaches, mostly cliff /hillside areas. We could swim, kayak and snorkle around the bay right in front, also a boat trip around the island by the hotel boat was just lovely, lots of great snorkeling sites.
Our group stayed at their new cast away beach villas, the rooms are just perfect, nicely decorated and very comfortable. The family villa has got a nice queen size extra bed which fit up to 2 kids perfectly. The staffs were very friendly and helpful. Food was good and plenty, not exceptional but nice enough to keep us completely relaxed at the hotel for days. The hotel is about 10-15 min rides to town/pier.

At The Haad Tien you'll find the surperbe setting combined with peace and quit and very good service.

The staff is very friendly and will do everything to help you - e.g. book your tickets for the ferry, call other hotels to arrange transfer and arrange diving courses.

The Haad Tien is the perfect spot for enjoing your peace and quit as the bungalows sit wide apart and are few in number.

We just returned from a 4 night stay at the Haad Tien with two young children... we have mixed feelings as the beach was gorgeous but accommodations were too basic (definitely too basic for their price tag) and poorly designed.

We stayed in a Hideaway Villa, one of the newer built ones, and it fell very short of what we were expecting. For starters, although our room was one of the closer ones to the beach, there was only a very partial view of the ocean, as the view is obstructed by trees. Other Hideaway villas were even further away from the beach, and the one I checked had an even worse view.

The room itself is quite small and doesn't have adequate lighting at night (only a very weak light and two small lamps)... There were numerous problems with the room and I am quite surprised by the lack of thinking that went into building them. There are two windows, one in the room and one in the bathroom which have some type of wooden/bamboo blinds which are fine for daytime, but at night when the light is on, people outside have a clear view of what's going on inside... I'm not talking about a peak, they see EVERYTHING! The one in the bedroom we were able to cover with a towel but the bathroom blind was too high to cover. There are large doors/windows in the room (aside from the two above mentioned windows) which are covered by proper curtain. But there is a large window on top of these doors which goes across the whole room and that does not have a curtain at all. So as as soon as the morning hits, there is no way to block out the light.

In the bathroom the shower is not closed off, so when you use the shower the toilette floor becomes completely wet... The hotel does not provide any bars of soap, we asked and they said they provide shower gel which can be used for hand soap... They also don't have any conditioner. One of the days during our stay the cleaning people forgot to refill our shampoo and shower gel. Another day they only partially refilled it.

The main door does not have a key or proper lock, so when you leave the room you must lock the door with a padlock.

The electricity is another problem. It must have shut off about 15 times throughout our stay, although it was only for about 30 seconds or less each time.

The room has no proper dresser, so storage was a problem...

The beds weren't too comfortable either. Overall I was very unhappy with the room, perhaps the beach villas are better, but for the price they charge for the Hideaway villas they should provide much more... (I have previously visited Ko Tao and compared to some of the resorts I've seen, namely Ko Tao Cabana's and the Jamakhiri, the Haad Tien just falls very short...)

I will say that we used the babysitting service for our children and our kids were very happy and had a great time, not only with the babysitter Ging, but with the other workers as well. They all seemed to love kids and played with them during our whole stay.

They offer free Wifi but unfortunately I couldn't catch it properly in my room, as it was located between the two routers...

We found most of the staff to be friendly, and the beach is very beautiful and private... Paul and Mo were very courteous and helpful!

The only reason I am giving 3 stars is because of the grounds and most of the staff... the Hideaway villa would not get more than 1 star...

My intention is not to compare this to other 5 star resorts, rather to other 3-4 stars elsewhere in Thailand as well as in Ko Tao.
