Koh Tao Simple Life Resort
Ranked #15 of 50 Hotels in Koh Tao
Reviewed 25 August 2011

We booked an open water diving course and 4 nights accommodation with the simple life. Firstly may I say the dive company and the hotel are actually both separate and I would highly recommend doing a PADI course with them. The hotel however was a completely different story!
We were lied to on arrival and told the aircon in our room wasn't working and we were being moved to another hotel. We reluctantly agreed and were very unhappy with the alliterative hotel. When we met up with friends who were also staying at the simple life we discovered that they had also been told the same thing re the aircon but refused to move and were given there rooms. Their rooms were really lovely and we were so disappointed not to be staying where we had booked, especially considering we were diving with them too. When we went to complain and basically beg for our room we were met with contempt and an argument that was basically going round in circles. We were told to come back the next morning and we would get a room. The hassle of this was incredible as we were up early to begin our course the next day and just wanted to get settled! Following this incident the reception staff would barely look at or speak to my friend and I. I found the whole thing very frustrating and completely unprofessional as it was clear that they had overbooked the hotel and were trying to get rid of people. Also the standard rooms are of a completely different standard to the superior and we had a mosquito problem and a gigantic spider problem due to the huge gap under the door!! On the plus side the hotel is very well located, the breakfast is very good and the bar and pool area is lovely! Just don't fall for the lies at reception.

Set slightly back from the main road in Sairee beach, Simple life Resort is ideally located without being too affected by the late-night revellers in the bars close by.

We had a (spotlessly clean) superior A/C room and it was enormous. Although massive, storage space was a bit lacking, and the bedside tables (fixed to the walls) were too far away from the bed to be useable. Nice balcony overlooking the pool.

The pool is nice but small and there is no bar service.

The staff were very helpful and friendly when approached, but not in your face.

The breakfast however was pretty grim. There were flies everywhere, on the butter, jam coffee pot. This was a buffet style, fresh eggs made to order as long as you want omelette of fried, but the sausage and bacon looked like it had been there for hours. If you got there early enough it was edible, if not, forget it. There was also a Thai dish on offer, but it looked like yesterday's left-overs.

We ate in the restaurant for lunch/dinner a few times and the food was good quality (apart from the all you can eat pizza buffet - trust me, just don't!, it's all tasteless and topped with minute portions of left-overs).The waiting staff are friendly.

There is a bit of noise from contruction work, but not overly annoying, and the walls are pretty thin so you can hear muffled conversations (and dragging furniture/banging doors) from your neighbours.

I was tempted to give a 3 star review, but the positives outway the minor negatives, and I think that's a little unfair on the staff, who work extremely hard, so it's a 4, and a recommendation from me.

The hotel is currently undergoing expansion and so lying by the pool was not always relaxing. However, the location of the hotel and the friendliness of the staff is excellent. The hotel certainly needs to sort out its breakfast though as this is a disappointing affair with chipped crockery, reheated food and flies!

The staff were nice enough. We had two ground floor rooms overlooking the pool which I think were the best rooms they had. The rooms are spacious and clean but I think there must have been a sewerage problem as there was an awful smell coming from the bathrooms even though they try very hard to diguise it. The A/C in one of the rooms wasn't working properly. We ended up only staying one night then moved. It looks as though they are building a new wing to the hotel so this may improve things.

I think the owners gave us a honeymoon suite or something by accident, if they didn't then the pictures don't do it any justice!

The room was massive, and clean. The bathroom was amazingly huge, and full of character. The whole room had very unique lighting, it really felt like we paid much much more than we did. The reception staff so nice, and so were the rest of the hotel staff. Breakfast was included, and yummy, pretty much everything you want.

The pool is decent, wasn't busy, and it's looked after on a daily basis. My only gripe about this place is the roosters that live somewhere up the road! They like to wake you up in the mornings! But the room was worth it.

Koh Tao a cute place...great for partying and hanging out. I can see why a lot of parents lose their children to this place! It's like being lost in a twilight. The night time is lovely, drinking buckets and watching the stars. They have a great Muy Thai fight that is only a fraction of what you would pay in Bangkok, and everyone that was there said the Koh Tao fight was much better value for money and quality! If you come to Koh Tao, stay here, it's worth the money!
