“Ok but smelly and noisy”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 January 2013

The hotel is OK and reasonably priced but there are cheaper and better available in Sairee beach. The pick up and drop off was great and the staff nice too. Breakfast was poor tbh, and flies everywhere. I know this is Asia, but I've been to Thailand 15 times and never seen it flies so bad, whether its the resort-restaurant or Sairee in general I don't know. And the smell, raw sewage in the bathroom - yuk. The swimming pool was a nice place to relax and the beach is two mins walk away. The beach is OK, seen much better in Thailand. I dived with simple life divers who were good and cheap, but the diving in Tao is poor for the seasoned diver. The bar-restaurant was very noisy at night but thankfully we were far enough back from the street we couldn't hear it, but we did have to put up with noisy drunks all night shouting. Shame as this place could be so good.

Nice rooms (plumbing abit dodgy) and nice restaurant with good buffet breakfast. Friendly staff. There is some construction going on next door at the moment but we didn't hear a sound from it. Our room was a bit of a mission to get to and we had a view of a shack but otherwise a nice stay even if Sairee beach wasn't my idea of paradise.

Pros
•Excellent location
•Free pier pick up and drop off
•Staff are very obliging and helpful

Cons
•The doors into the bedrooms are so noisy they seriously need to be sprayed with oil.
•The breakfast was horrible !
•Welcome drink was digusting like a pint of vinegar
• the lock on the door was faulty, after staff cleaned room they would never lock the door

The room was clean and spacious. The staff at the restaurant were friendly, and the front desk staff civil. The breakfast was decent and the food at the restaurant is actually quite good.

However...
The plumbing in the room was very dodgy.. The tap in the basin was very loose and the shower head barely had any water pressure.

The biggest complaint is that the whole time there was a smell of kimchi (pickled cabbage) which did not go away. We noticed it straight away and thought the aircon would remove it but during the night I woke up and the smell was still awful. The next day I complained to the front desk who sent a guy up to basically squirt some air freshener and that was it. I would've expected them to offer us a new room. Needless to say the bad smell stayed for the 4 nights we were there. I suspect the aircon was faulty or possibly picking up the bad smell from the outside which looked like it had dodgy sewerage.
Wouldn't stay there again.

I have now stayed at Simple life 3 times over the last three years and will go back again next year. They are linked to the Dive operators of the same name, but I think the actual ownership is different, but no matter, you get a discount on your dives if you stay at this hotel.

The hotel is not on the beach, but it is only a couple of mins walk down to the beach (and to the dive shop), it has very nice rooms with good aircon, lots of space, TV, big beds, a safe, and even has a drying room out the back of each room for your diving gear if you need it.

The pool is small but usually quiet and very refreshing and the restaurant is a nice place to sit and watch the world go by from. It is in a good location to hit the bars and restaurants situated in Sairee as well. There is also a regular pick up and drop off from/to the ferry terminal on the next beach over (but that area is pretty shoddy compared to Sairee).

The staff are friendly and competant, my only grip would be that they are a bit over-eager to clean the rooms and can sometimes sit outside waiting for you to vacate so they can clean.

Koh Tao can be lovely, but I would advise not going in high season as all the dive boats are rammed full of tourist divers with poor trianing bashing into each other underwater and genrally ruining the chances of a decent dip. The Simple Life boat can get pretty packed too, but it generally seems less crowded than some of the other schools.

As backpackers we decided to treat ourselves to a nice hotel and went with the simple life.

At first glance rooms were lovely, nicely decorated towels on the bed, nice big bathroom good tv channels, 2 bottles of water and the restaurant seemed nice and busy. We ate at the restaurant every day and I admit that you are batting away flys all the time. They had good deal nights on though which is nice if you want to save some money.

When we went to bed we noticed that the bed linen was dirty with a lot of stains. This didnt get changed despite the room getting cleaned everyday for 4 nights and I dont feel that is acceptable.

We gave in laundry 2 nights before we were due to leave and didnt get it back until 10 minutes before our boat was due to leave for Phangan depsite being told it would be ready the same time the next night.

Koh Tao had pretty dreadful weather during our stay so it was nice to have good room and a nice tv!
