The Hillside Resort -avoid at all costs it was not the hotel we had booked we were told that this was comparable . It certainly isnt and any company reading the reviews would have known that.We were apalled by what we found. The room is tiny hardly big enough for 2 twin beds and the bathroom is barely adequate. It is way over priced. Having spent 2 months backpacking - we know basic and clean and value for money and we cant even say that about this place,

Room Tip: doubt if there is atip we can give as it didnt help us !

Reading some of the other negative reviews, we did not experience anything negative. We were met off the ferry by a friendly driver from the hotel, even though the ferry was 4 hours late.
The Reception staff were very helpful and friendly, as were the waiting staff. The seaview room, was clean and well furnished.
The hotel, as the name tells you, is built on a hillside and some of the paths are extremely steep.
Contact the hotel prior to your arrival to arrange a free transfer.

Great place Koh Tao! You arrive on this amazing island...the resort pick up is waiting for you with a nice guy to help you out with your luggages......BUT, after 20 minutes drive up the hill you arrive at the hotel.
It is spread out on the hills and you have to walk all your way up and down the hill to go from reception to the room.
The rooms are awful: small, full of dirt and animals (ants and bugs), and the overall furniture is very very poor.
When you go up to complain for the 1) room that was not as the one on the reservation and on the website pictures and 2) for the poor hygienic conditions you are verbally ASSAULTED by the receptionist. Also, another guy from the hotel arrives screaming and shouting...eventually he also tried to beat us.
A TERRIBLE experience and I would never ever recommend it to anybody. This place should be shut down immediately.

I have to repeat a similar situation as reviewer below - Arrived at Hillside Resort without an unconfirmed transfer from the port. Had to pay 100B each. Upon arrival we were shown to our room in the golf buggy by two helpful staff members to find out the room was a mess and had not been cleaned due to it being deemed not available due to an ant infestation. We waited for about 10 minutes until a member of staff from reception came and informed us that they had no other rooms available for that night so we would have to move to another resort! Only thing being Kao Tao was pretty much full for that night! Naturally we were angry especially as we had booked here for the pool also. After nearly an hour and half wait we were brought to a hotel in Mae Nam town which we then decided to stay in for the remainder of our 3 night stay. We were collected from the alternative hotel the next morning at 9am and promised breakfast at Hillside which was finished by the time we were advised to go. When we requested a full refund (which we had been informed the day before by a blunt receptionist that we could get) we were met by rude / no eye contact and a sudden lack of the English language! After arguing our case and requesting to speak to the manager who apparently couldn't come upstairs (?!) we were told a refund would be made available in cash but we had to wait. This 'wait' became 2 and a half hrs!! Awful reception staff and a farce of a situation.
This does not seem like a rare occurrence here.

Other than that the pool area was pretty, however quite unsafe, the resort and rooms need a serious update, definitely not suitable for anyone without a level of fitness. The location is not ideal as at least a 10min drive from busier areas - free shuttle only runs one way at 8am, 8.30am and 1.30pm.

Myself and three friends booked in for a three night stay. Got off the ferry and took a cab up the substantial hill to the resort for 400 baht. We were then faced by the worst front desk staffer that I have ever met in my life.

She told us that there was no room available for us. We had booked the night before, but had received a confirmation email, so that shouldn't have been a problem. She then proceeded to tell us that it was our fault that there was o room available, as "what did we expect booking in high season". Se also said that a member of their staff had been waiting at the dock for us to get off the ferry, in order to take us to the alternative accommodation, and that it was our fault for not spotting this person. By the way, we looked up the price of the alternative place for the first night, and it was a much lower value.

Anyway, we come back on day two, picked up by them and brought back to the hotel at 9am. Told to have breakfast then go check in. Finish breakfast at 10, the told by reception to come back at 12. Then told 1. Then told 2. Then actually laughed at by the horrendous woman when it was suggested that we get some money back for the day we wasted. A half hour rant at the manager then ensued, where they gave us 2000 baht back, or the cost of one of our rooms for one night. Incidentally, a couple were complaining at the same time that they had booked a sea view room, to be given one with a tree in front of the window. The manager genuinely could not comprehend why this was a problem.

Other than that, the resort has a nice pool, great breakfast. Rooms are cramped, and the whole place is incredibly steep.

I don't recommend anyone to stay at this resort because of the following:
1. smell in the bungalow (humidity?) is terrible. We have stayed there only 2 nights although paid 5!!!
2. nothing to do, nowhere to go (hotel shuttle takes you only one way! three times a day) so renting a motorbike next door is a must!
3. garden view means looking at the next bungalow 2 metres away...
4. there is no closet in the bungalow!
5. staff at the reception rude (when asking for the queen size bed instead of twin, they said that we haven't stated that while booking and is our fault to have twin bed....
6. the hill to get to the reception is killing your knees! not recommend to small kids and older people!
7. the restourant in the hotel is expensive (maitai 220, small singha 120, breakfast 200...)
8. i would recommend ko tao only to divers, because it is expensive to rent a room that is half a quality as in other islands across thailand... on the other hand if being there (not as a diver) there is absolutely nothing to do.... not nice beaches...

We stayed at the Hillside resort and were shocked this hotel still gets a regular flow of guests. Lets start with the good points however.

Positives: Great welcome staff from the ferry - we got a free transfer to the resort in a truck (with no shock absorbers) and the driver and general staff were fantastic - we really loved them. The reception team seemed a bit off from the beginning but I put that behind me. The views from our seaview rooms were incredible and the restaurant served good food.

Negatives:
The initial feeling going down the hill on the golf cart that was that of a rollercoaster ride which was fun for me but had my wife and her parents feeling very vulnerable - the "road" is narrow and extremely steep. We wondered, once we were down at our rooms, just how we would get back up and out to go and see the rest of the island.

It rained while we were staying there and while this is ok - the ant farm that poured into our house was not. about 500 - 600 big red ants came inside and crawled over everything. My shoes were sticky from killing them and my wife was afraid so at 11pm I walked up (again) the stairs to the restaurant, in the rain, and asked for poison to kill them. This somewhat slowed them down but I had to jam towels in the door to stop more from coming in - I didn't get much sleep that night.

Two floorboards broke when I walked on them (I am a reasonably sized man - 90kg) and the toilet leaked all night.

The next morning I asked the reception where the manager was and immediately got bluntly told, without being asked what was wrong or if they could help, to walk back down the labyrinth of stairs I had just walked up. The stairs and hills are no joke people. Then I asked if she could please call him up to meet us. another blunt and rude, no. I asked why and she could not give an answer - when we started to walk away to the manager they then quickly wanted to know what was wrong and I then became angry. Basically a full blown argument erupted and it was completely unavoidable. The front staff are terrible terrible creatures and have put me off from ever recommending the resort.

The private beach they advertise is riddled with broken glass and snorkelling there is horrible because of all the pollution (packets, bottles lying under the surface)

You get the feeling that the resort is trying to lock you in or cut you off from the rest of the island and getting you to use all their facilities at their premium prices, which is exactly what happened to my in laws and their friends (all 50+) they could not handle the hills and stairs and were very nervous in the golf cart. Wifi is also only available at certain lobby areas, which you will sweat to get to.

The rest of the staff were great, possibly the only other complaint is that 100 baht for a normal coffee (not espresso) is a bit much to ask for in Thailand.

The two stars are for the view and the rest of the team.

A great exercise camp - a bad holiday destination.

Room Tip: Get a seaview room - I could not imagine going to this place without at least having a good view. Al...
