We actually stayed in Jan 10 (not on the tripadvisor listing) and it was our 3rd stay there.
Were totally in love with thailand and have been going for around 20 years. A lot has changed in this beautiful country, especially the islands, and we travel very far to find areas which still have an authentic feel. Chalook bay is such a place, relaxed, quiet, no booming sound systems, travelly not touristy and there is an amazing beach BBQ. As we now have a small child we needed to find a resort which was a bit more than a shack on the beach with no loo (as we used to get for £1 a night), but which didnt feel like a total sell out family - all in - package deal - type thing. The Ko Tao resort is the perfect place. The staff are so friendly and we know them quite well by now, they are super child friendly and didn't used to mind our son running around under their feet, soaking wet from the pool. They had added a huge new extension (paradise zone) which was all a bit too far away from the beach for us, we prefer the beach side delux rooms which were still a good deal at £50 a night. We loved the new board walk, fab for a walk to the bar at the end for a sunset cocktail and watching the many fish in the sea. Our son loved running between the 2 pools, and its so safe there (right at the end of the beach) that we never worried if we lost sight of him for a few mins. The other people staying there are are a respectful, international crowd. The food is yummy (try the green curry rice - amazing). Its just a 10 mins taxi ride into the action. I certainly wouldn't recommend it to young friends wanting to party the whole time, better for people seeking a calm, gentle place to stay. Amazing spa just 15 mins drive away too. Also this Jan i was taken ill and had to be emergency evacuated off the island to Samui hospital (not food poisoning dont worry!). The staff at Ko Tao resort were so helpful, driving us to the local clinic at first and then arranging for a super quick check out when we realised we needed to leave quickly. As soon as everything was back on track, we returned to the hotel a few days later and they upgraded us to their amazing room above the pool room for a night. Again showing their kindness.
Best of luck in all of your travels
p.s As for the other reviews which say the rooms smell, well thats thailand for you, i havn't stayed anywhere in thailand which doesn't smell a bit, they don't have western plumbing... its all part of the adventure. if you're nasally sensitive then perhaps a stay in switzerland or something?

Koh Tao Resort has 2 Zones, which are:
1. Normal Zone (build from the start of the resort)
2. Paradise Zone (build in the same area but situate higher than the normal zone)

Normal Zone situate next to the beach, all the buildings are OK. I don't like the styles of the building, but stayable. Only the beach front room are look good to me. All other are OK to sleep, but don't expect an all new. In rainy season better avoid the bangalow as you may smell the the moisture of the building, which happen from the rain.

Paradise Zone are all newly build. However, it you walk it will take about 5-10 minute to the high up level. The resort have the free transport from the normal zone to paradise zone.

On the paradise zone has a small pool with horizon view make you feel like you swim in the sea. I like it because I can see other 2 island, which are Samui and Pangan island. really stunning view.

Staff at this resort can speak good English. So, there is no problem for communication. 10 minutes by walk and you will reach the famous restaurant call New Heaven.

2 bad points about this place are:
1. The beach is not a soft sandy beach, but fill with the sea shells.
2. Far from the center of the island where all the restaurant and bars are. Everytime you need to go to the center it cost 100 baht per person per trip.

After all above.

I went there with my 2 friends and we booked one of the Delux rooms/cottages near the beach - it was small, too small, bathroom dirty , stinky and tiny. Just not what we saw on the website....for the moment we thought its a mistake in booking ...(?)Staff who carried our luggage told us to give them a tip ! They didint want to leave our room without getting a tip and were upset when they got some change. ( and i dont mind tipping nice staff but without this kind of attitude) Didnt like the restaurant area as well. We have complained that the bathroom stinks ( def some problems with the toilet drains) , after some time one of the staff showed up with the air freshner , sprayed and said that it didnt stink anymore :))) - of course for few minutes only...We complained and got an upgrade to the Paradise zone! :) and it was soooooo much better over there! Further from the beach ( still very close! very short walk),amazing view, XXL room, very nice bathroom etc and really nice staff :)
so dont book rooms near the beach - its not worth it! oh and they charge for internet down there but its free in the Paradise zone. It all would be ok if it was hostel or any other cheap acc. but its not the cheapest.

Originally booked into the Ko Tao Resort Aircon Bungalow but only lasted one night - The bungalow was damp and the musky smell was too much it seemed to get into your throat and make you feel quite unwell. Several other guests staying in this accomodation seemed to have very chesty coughs. For an extra £6 per night we transfered to the paradise zone which was excellent. The whole place appears new, the room which we stayed in (which was the cheapest) was large, modern, exceptionally clean and had a huge balcony which overlooked the sea. Staff were fantastic and the pool area was amazing. They shuttle you down each morning to the main resort for breakfast (as we were the only guests staying at the time) and the breakfast is good. Staff in the main resort good and helpful and the small beach is adequate. Plan to go back to this hotel before traveling down to malaysia but would only stay in the paradise zone.

We booked a deluxe room at this hotel as the pictures looked quite good. The location on the beach is great and in a stunning location. We checked out after 2 nights (had booked fro 8 nights) as our room stank of sewerage and was so small you could hardly swing a cat in it. We did not consider this room appropriate for a family with 2 children, aged 4 and 2 yrs. The restaurant left a lot to be desired, no pool side service, pool edge so rough you cut yourself on it. No phone in room, tv small, no internet in room, breakfast VERY average. The bathroom was revolting for the price they charge.

They have opened a new section of the resort which located on top of the hill (The paradise zone) which I feel is getting all the attention these days. Maybe the rooms, etc are nicer in this section of the resort but it is not located on the beach.

I would recommend Sea Shells over this resort.

We got a bungalow which seemed a nice idea. It was dated and smelled damp but at least we didn't have to put up with our neighbours having sex! Our friends stayed in a regular room and the walls were incredibly thin, they said they could hear people on the toilet!

The staff aren't the friendliest and the massage is really poor, my girlfriend's masseuse was smoking a cigarette whilst on the job!

The breakfast was so poor it wasn't worth fighting off the flies, we skipped it and went out to one of the local cafes.

Have another look before you book this, I'm certain you'll get something better for what you're about to spend.

The crazy golf course jut up the road is great though...

I stayed there for 3 nights, in a garden bungalow with aircon, tv.
Overall the room was ok, the bathroom needs to be redecorated, it looks a bit old.
I think it is overpriced and a bit far from the main city (Sairee) - I needed a taxi or to rent a bike.
The beach is nice though.
