“A beautiful retreat on an amazing beach”
Reviewed 4 March 2012

Kho Tao Cabanas is an amazing bungalow retreat set amongst a sprawling jungle hillside overlooking an amazing beach.

My partner and I had just flown over from a week on Phi Phi Island (which though still beautiful, is now a victim of its own success. Streets clogged with cheap t-shirt shops and drunk bunk packers). We came via Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, spending only a few days on the beach on Phangan as both these islands are now also suffering from the excesses of tourism (just skip both and head straight to Koh Tao).

The transfer pick up at the jetty was a bit of a shambles. Or guide was there to greet us with a sign, but there was no transport. After waiting a good 15 minutes, we decided to take a local taxi (a truck with a covered area at the back that you sit in).

But the transfer mix up aside, the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome by the lovely girls at reception who greeted us with cold towels and a welcome drink. All smiles, perfect English and very accommodating.

We stayed in a bungalow overlooking the beach. Think Gilligan's Island but more upmarket. The rooms are comfortable and the bungalows are set amongst the grounds, so that the entire resort has a feel of being part of its surrounds, rather than dominating it.

We decided to extend our stay immediately from 2 nights to 5 nights and the girls at reception assisted in every way possible, even calling our next hotel to cancel and explaining on our behalf. The girls were also very happy to recommend local businesses for scuba diving (Scuba Junction and Good Time Adventures - both who were brilliant) Outstanding service!!

The spa has a great menu of body treatments that are pricey when compared to a massage or foot rub you would get in town, but it was well worth it. The staff were experienced, the spa impeccably clean and we left feeling revitalized and refreshed.

The restaurant has a pretty good offering of food. Prices again are resort prices. The breakfast buffet is a bit sparse and the staff here were a bit hit and miss (one girl in particular was surly and didn't smile at all).

There are beachside day beds set up that you can lounge around on and you can order food from the restaurant from staff who wander by every half hour or so. If the beach isn't your thing, there is a great infinity pool complete with waterfall that overlooks the grounds out to the beach.

There are only 2 drawbacks to Kho Tao Cabanas-
1 -The hike up the stairs through the grounds to the hillside cottages (this might just be down to my laziness actually and not be a real drawback).
2 - The disco thumping that starts at about 8pm each night and continues until about 3-4am every morning. There are Bach clubs situated half way down the beach and due to Kho Tao Cabanas location the sound travels up the beach. We honestly did not have a full restful nights sleep the entire time we were there. It began to really grate on our nerves by the last day. Thankfully I had a full box of sleeping tablets on hand. It's a shame that such a beautiful and idealistic setting is ruined by a small party crowd.

Overall, Kho Tao Cabanas is a wonderful resort in a beautiful location with (for the most part) friendly staff.

The villas have great views, Koi pool villa, is good one bedroom, with private pool & jacuzzi! They are cleaned daily, breakfast is pretty poor in general, buffet especially bad! However they do have rock solid wifi Internet access all over resort.... Expect mosquitoes to be pretty aggressive, and watch out for ferry pickup, on arrival it Is a mess, they only show First names on board from driver, ( no one told them Koh Tao is common sign wording!!) but at least construction work at resort is now finished! Lunch and dinner ok at all day restaurant, but much better value & quality in town, try Barracuda, or Fizz (about 5 min walk along the beach).. It's Thailand so forget complaining, and just go with flow!

From the moment I arrived and was greeted with a cold drink and towel I knew this was a fantastic choice and I was definetely right!

The accomodation is beautiful and very spacious, the gardens are pristine, breakfast is amazing and the staff are great! Drinks at the restaurant are a little more pricey than down the beach but the views make this worthwhile.

I am going back to Koh Tao and there is no other hotel I would consider!!!!!

Gorgeous cobanas in a beautiful location. The rooms are amazing, with views right along the entire beach. I went on my own, but I do have to say tat it woild be perfect as a romantic getaway but near to a decent nightlife. If you really want to know what it's like, go there!

My boyfriend and I stayed here for 4 nights in July 2011 and didn't want to leave....so we've booked another trip, this time for a week, this coming April. We stayed in some amazing resorts in Chiang Mai (Manathai Village) and Koh Samui (Silavadee) as well but loved the overall atmosphere in Koh Tao so much we can't wait to go back. The service was spot on and the location was perfect - far enough away to have privacy but only a 10 min walk to all the bars and restuarants in town. The free brekkie was great and the view from the restaurant was lovely. I can't really fault this place. Absolutely loved it!

Whilst in Thailand we stayed at some fantastic 5 star hotels in Koh Samui, Krabi & Bangkok & I must say that Koh Tao Cabanas were actually one of my favourites. Yes It is very different to some of the hotels we stayed in but that's what I loved. All the other hotels were amazing but you could be anywhere in the world where as here I actually felt like I was in Thailand & this sort of accommodation is what it should be all about! Our room was huge, the bed very comfy, loved the outdoor shower (just keep the lights off and candels on to avoid getting bitten), great view from our balcony. It really was all very beautiful. The restaurant was very nice with a great view. The food was great too. There's also some good restaurants and bars just a walk along the beach incase you want to venture out a bit. I really would recommend staying here and enjoyed every bit of my stay and wish we had stayed on longer!

We enjoyed staying here. 1 of my husband's favorite things was the outdoor shower & toilet. It was decorated nicely. Size is not huge but acceptable. Loved the view and nice to have our own hammock. Breakfast was yummy, beautiful restaurant. We walked to the bars & restaurants on the beach, Fizz lounge was 10 minutes away and great. The staff was not too friendly here but it was fine.

Room Tip: The sky cottages were the most affordable and they were great.
