This turned out to be my favourite stop in Thailand. We got to the Koh Tao Cabana for around 300 baht in a taxi from the pier once we were off the boat. Checking in was easy and we were given cold flannels and a drink on arrival - in the searing heat this was most welcoming!
We booked into Koh Tao Cabana b&b for 3x nights (cottage 33) at the beginning of April. Cottages are the cheapest option at this resort. I say cottage but it looked like a treehouse. It was fully functioning tho, air con/ hot water / cable tv/ safe/ comfy bed etc and here in Koh Tao you are doing extremely well to have all those amenities!!! There was an outdoor shower at the back at first I wasn't sure but I soon got to love it. Bugs never really bothered me during this stay (lots of geckos & the noises they make are hilarious) and the staff kindly left us bug spray in the room anyway - a nice touch. Breakfast is in the most beautiful setting overlooking a cove and a good menu too - western choices as well as Thai dishes.
Our cool treehouse with its own hammock, was a 2-3 minute walk from the resorts designated bit of beach, baring in mind this is at the end of sairee beach it is perfect, very serene & peaceful - don't forget your snorkell. Getting a sunbed was never an issue & staff are on hand to serve a food/drink menu. If you wanted to walk along to the busier part you can it will take you around 10 minutes along the beach. A few bars, shops, restaurants await.
I was anxious from other reviews on coming here, for eg: being basic - yes it is but it feels like a luxury type of basic, it felt like we were living in the wild with all the mod cons we needed. The noise - it did not bother us from the bars further along the beach it was only very faint I found, and this is Sairee beach - if you want total isolation stay somewhere else! I would advise you need to be mobile though to stay here as getting to our treehouse consisted of a 2-3 minute uphill walk involving a few steps. The electricity seemed to regularly go on and off but I think this is an island thing as opposed to the resorts fault. And yes the swimming pool is closed at the moment.
Overall I loved it & if I ever return to Koh Tao I wouldn't stay anywhere else.
