“Great resort, but falls short”
Reviewed 24 December 2013

This is a fantastic property, located on a hillside, with spectacular views of the ocean. The Deluxe Pavilion room was spacious and comfortable. It overlooked the bay, and had a great balcony. The pool is also great.

This is positioned as a luxury resort, and that’s were some chinks became apparent. There is no house keeping after 5pm. What that means is that, if you have a coffee in the evening, the cups are dirty for next morning coffee. Keep in mind that this is priced similar to hotels like the Atlantis, Dubai. One would expect the staff to do their best to accommodate the guests. This was not the case; the staff are quick to say No. Some are really good thought, for e.g. at the reception, and at the Seaside Grill.

One incident that was unforgivable - My family was using the pool. Soon after, the staff starts cleaning the decks using Clorox, with water taken from the pool. As the cleaning progresses, this filthy water containing Clorox leaks back into the pool… Unbelievable! The worst part was this was being supervised by the in-house manager.

The reason why I picked the resort was because it is beach side resort, and is located on Shark Reef bay. The beach is however small (about 30 feet in length). Snorkelling was good, but not exceptional compared to other places on the island (such as Sairee beach). The ocean floor has corals, and is difficult for wading. Some rocks had slime on it, and I actually slipped and fell!

The resort is on a hillside, which means there are lots and lots of steps. This is natural to this particular resort, and the views are worth it.

Room Tip: Room #9 is located halfway between the lobby and the beach. Comfortable room, and has a great view a...

I stayed in Jamahkiri over Christmas this year and was extremely disappointed. The customer service wasn't just poor, it was irritating. It is a very commercial place and they asked about 5 or 6 times one 2 days if we wanted to have a Christmas dinner at the hotel. They specified that they would not be serving food and that we need to book in advance (while there is more than enough space and no customers) and were pushy beyond acceptable. The rooms weren't cleaned and we ran out of toilet paper. They charged the bottle of champagne to us twice (yes the same one!) and they just refuse to give any advice on anything outside the hotel. You are just a prisoner here with your big wallet and don't need to go anywhere...

Room Tip: Just don't go there...

My sister and I came and stayed a couple of nights here, unfortunately during Typhoon Haiyan.

The location- the hotel is located high up on a mountain side and the actual hotel casades down the same mountain, on the other side. The hotel is isolated and is not close to the night life. However, the hotel does have a free shuttle that takes you into town, twice a day. You can easily hire a taxi from town to get back and taxis are available from the hotel. There is also a free shuttle to take you from the ferry pier to the hotel, when you arrive and depart.

The hotel- the majority of the hotel is facing the ocean. Just wide open ocean. Its beautiful. Being that the hotel is carved out of the mountain side, there are alot of stairs within the hotel. If you are okay with lots of stairs, then you will be fine with this place. The lobby and restaurant are located near the top of the hotel. The restaurant has an open air feel and has large windows overlooking the ocean. It is peaceful and its a nice view to have while you eat. The food is good. Not great, but good, solid fare. There is a shapely pool, with a pool bar, located a stair case down. Thereafter, the rooms go down from there. The first floor is the lowest floor and you climb up for each additional floor with the exit for the hotel at the top. Again, lots of stairs. But it keeps the bum tight. The coolest thing the hotel has is a mini man made beach at the bottom of the hotel. You can sit on the edge of the wall and it feels like you are in the middle of the ocean. There is also a landing where you can take kayaks from the hotel. You can get directly into the ocean from this platform to go snorkeling and swimming. Unfortunately because of the Typhoon, I did not get into the ocean. I did, however, go and sit at the man made beach and let the huge waves crash into me. So the ocean came to me.

The room- the room is large and very spacious. Ever room has a balcony that looks out onto the ocean. Its relaxing to see the sun rise in the morning as it comes up over the water. The beds are standard queen hotel beds. They afford a comfortable sleep. There is good tv, which held up surprisingly well with the typhoon winds. The hotel gives complimentary water and their is a hotel bar. (we took the shuttle into town, stocked up on snacks, and came back). The bathroom is properly laid out. There is a standing rain spout shower and a large soak in tub. The fixtures are gold and mother of pearl, which sounds tacky but looks great.

The service- this place, just like most of Thailand, has great service. The hotel staff speak English and are friendly. The staff are quick to speak to hotel guests and always with a smile.

There is a spa attached to the hotel which operates independently from the hotel. Hotel guests receive a discount if they use the spa, which my sister and I did. I had one of the best massages here. And I have had alot, especially on this trip. The lady had hands from the Gods. She found knots in my back, I didn't know I had and eased them out. If you stay here, definately get a massage. You'll be glad you did.

We stayed 4 nights in this hotel in November. We absolutely loved the hotel location, even though it is a bit remote. We stayed in a deluxe bungalow, which was lovely. We had a view on the sea.
Staff at the hotel were friendly, but some could not speak English very well and sometimes it was difficult to get things arranged. For example: the dive master was on holidays, but the reception could not help us in contacting another dive school or dive master. One morning we had to wake up really early and wanted to take some breakfast with us. This was also not possible even though in our view this would have been very easy (just pack some fruit). Also, they have a shuttle bus to town, but it only runs 2 or 3 times per day. Since the hotel is so remote and taxis are very expensive on the island, we think the shuttle bus should go a bit more frequent.
Other than these minor points we really enjoyed our stay and we were sad to leave this place.

I was seriously impressed by Jamahkiri and think it deserves more than just 4 stars. The staff were super friendly (especially 'Nice' who greeted us with a warm smile and great attitude every single day). Their ability to communicate and basic manners were exceptional. The ocean front rooms are incredible and I wished I could wake up to a view like that every day. The food was fantastic - we even braved salads and were delighted with the result. I love the way the pool is set out - you can have your own private little enclave for the afternoon and feel like the only 2 people at the resort. The little beach next door is just gorgeous and many of the snorkelling tours come to the front of the resort for it's great marine life. It really is only a short 10 min drive (plenty of free shuttles available) into Sairee Beach. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone going to Koh Tao!

Room Tip: Ocean front is a must.

We stayed here two nights after cancelling our stay in koh samui- too busy there. We fell in love with koh tao but this location is really far from the restaurants , beach and nightlife. Stay in sairee beach or close to it. We didn't find the staff friendly at all. They also change you renting a kayak and snorkel/ mask/ fin- they even drove after us to get the money for the snorkel we forgot to pay at the pier and overcharged. Breakfast is nice- good quiche and pastas but heard you were charged for a cappuccino if asked. Great free shuttle to Mae name but if needing to go to sairee it is quite expensive like 500 baht and this shuttle only goes at certain times. Stayed in the standard room in the main hotel would prefer a bungalow. Nice pool overlooking shark bay. Snorkelling is not that great in this bay- murky when we were there - go to the island nanguyen. BeAch next door attached to haad then is also not great but they do transport you over for free. We ate dinner in sairee as we found the prices expensive. Beautiful dining room though.

Room Tip: Book the bungalows! Lots of stairs

I absolutely loved staying at this place! My husband and I only stayed here for 2 nights but I wish I had stayed a bit longer.

The location is a bit out of the way but if you advise ahead of time they will pick you up at the port and take you to the hotel. It's very much in a secluded place on the hill and very difficult to get to! But once you are there it's amazing. All the comforts of a restaurant and aircon that you would need.

The room we stayed in was lovely and large with amazing views. All rooms like others have said look to be well appointed.

The snokling at the bottom of this hotel is out of this world. We saw 2 reef sharks (were told they are harmless)!! so amazing.

The power did go off twice while we were there but it came on within a matter of 5 mins so wasn't a biggie for me.

They also provide converters so you can charge your phone/laptop etc if you don't have one.

We had breakfast included in our stay and it was AMAZING. So much variety!! We enjoyed dinner here twice and realy enjoyed the food at the restaurant. Make sure to go at sunset you get amazing views! Get there early to get a good seat.

They have a small gym at this hotel which was OK. Treadmill a little small and rattled alot when I tried to run.

Overall we really enjoyed our stay here! The price is a little expensive for thailand but its so amazing :D Such a perfect holiday spot to really get away from it all!
