“Excellent views”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 September 2007

We stayed at the hotel for a week for the second part of our honeymoon. The view from our room was absolutely incredible. The room was nice and we received a free night and complimentary bottle of wine as it was our honeymoon. In general the hotel was lovely but without the view I really don't think it would have that much going for it.

Good points:
Lovely pool area, nice views from all areas of the hotel, lovely food, resonable treatments and friendly staff in the spa, Good access to the sea (excellent snorkelling), very quiet (I believe there are only 12 rooms and often we were the only ones by the pool or in the restaurant)

Bad points:
Very steep steps down to the sea a nightmare in the heat and certainly not suitible for those who have difficulty walking or those with young children. The staff sometimes seemed to be irritated that they had to do things when you wanted help as they were often sitting around because it was so quiet (although not all staff as some were very helpful). The road to the hotel is TERRIBLE. I read other reviews saying that it is a dirt track but it can't even be called that. It is horrendous and although the hotel provides transport on the hour the latest pick up is 8.30 which just isn't late enough (especially considering the prices of the rooms). There is a lack of atmosphere in the hotel due to the low numbers of guests (I know this would be heaven for a lot of people!) which means that you don't really want to be sitting around in the bar at nightime so it would be nice to be able to go elsewhere in the evening.

This is a beautiful resort but I thought it was too expensive for what you get. We stayed in a deluxe suite and although the room was lovely and had an amazing view, we found the resort boring. The road (dirttrack) up to the hotel is 1km of being thrown around the back of a pickup truck at the side of a mountain, lets just say that its not for the faint hearted. If you want to go into Mae Head to eat you need to get the last lift back at 8.30 or pay 600baht. The restaurant dosent have much of a selection on the menu so you will want to go out to eat after one night. Also the spa was terrible, it looked like stables....... I wouldnt be returning here again and I wouldnt recommend it to a friend.

  • Disliked — Spa, restaurant, the drive up to the hotel and the complete lack of proper running of the hotel.

Wasn't sure whether to rate this 4/5 or 5/5 as it certainly is 5/5 for somethings but 4/5 for others

We stayed in a deluxe room (no. 7) which had awesome panoramic seaviews with a wrap-around balcony. Could see a beautiful bay on one side.

The hotel is a lovely luxurious peaceful resort on an island which is otherwise quite catered for the back-packer.

Good points

- wonderfully peaceful. A real feeling of quiet and tranquilty about the place. No noisy music or kids causing trouble
- high quality / well designed rooms with incredible sea views
- lovely Thai restaurant (although limited menu, see bad points!) but a good choice of well-priced wine
- fantastic spa with authentic Thai treatments. The Thai ladies are all excellent, as are the facilities and decor . Prices very reasonable too (about £10 - £15 for hour long treatments)
- beautiful pool - we had the place to ourselves quite a lot or shared with just a few. No early morning panic for sunloungers as plenty to go around
- they run an hourly free shuttle into town and back
- very friendly staff
- nice business room with free internet connection and DVDs to borrow

bad points

- the location is up a very bumpy track. You can't do this on a scooter so it's either using the hotel's shuttle service (last taxi into town 8pm, last one back 8.30pm) or via a motorbike with decent tyres. We did the latter (from lederhosenbikes.com) but my husband is an experienced motor-cyclist but for the average person this would be a bit scarey - especially at night!
- the menu did get a bit samey. But with only 12 rooms, I can understand why it wasn't a huge menu. We thought that they could perhaps run a couple of 'specials' every night that changed daily, just to provide something different
- they don't keep the gym air-conditioned. They only close the windows and turn on the air con when you turn up to use it, but this makes no impact within the time we were in there. In 100 degree+ heat, it was pretty uncomfortable and impossible to work out for more than 20 minutes without over-heating. They should have this cool at all times really

Tip: Do get into Mae head and Sairee Village though as there are some good places to eat. Cafe Sol in Maehead for authentic Italian pizzas and pasta, and in Sairee - Pappas Tappas for posh nosh (verging on Fine Dining!), El Gringo for good Mexican.

I would definitely consider going back to Jamahkiri and wouldn't hesitate in recommending it for people who like peace and quiet and a feeling of getting away from it all.

We stayed 7 nights at the Jamahkiri, and chose it because it seemed like the best hotel on the island. There are about 12 bungalows with large balconys, and I believe all of them have a jacuzzi. The restaurant offers a great view and nice food. We stayed in both a deluxe room and a suite and enjoyed both very much, but standard-wise they are perhaps rather 4 than 5 star. Having said that, both me and my boyfriend loved this hotel for its intimate atmosphere, stunning view, and beautiful exterior. The white bungalows and connecting stairs and the many flowers give it an almost Mediterranean look, and the view is stunning. The hotel just opened up a dive shop, and we enjoyed a couple of dives with Stefan and Malika, the instructor/dive master. Both of them are very nice.

An unexpected plus was the bay outside the hotel. Allegedly this is the only place to see sharks on koh tao, and there were indeed large groups of black tip reef sharks. If this is of interest to you, make sure you bring/rent snorkling gear to enjoy this great experience (we didn't see any sharks scuba diving but met around 30 when snorkelling).

  • Liked — The sharks in the bay... of course also the view and the atmosphere
  • Disliked — Bar closes very early

Just come back from staying at the Jamahkiri. Had a great time - is an amazing small scale, plush resort with individual rooms built into the rocks perched out over the bay. The whole place is imaculatley decorated with lovely thai artifacts. Huge room with tv, dvd, fridge, jacuzzi bath etc with big balacony overlooking the sea. Large pool with waterfall and large sunbathing area which was rarely busy and also has nice decking down by the sea, where there is some coral and fishes. Lovely spa with good range of treatments which are really good value, esp the packages which we got free as stayed 5 nights. There is also a small monkey sanctuary at the resort with about 4/5 monkeys.

Two slight niggles about the Jamahkiri. First is the location - has amazing views and is nicely secluded but is a nightmare to get to - you can only get there by 4WD (do not attempt it by scooter!) and it takes over 20 mins on a massive pot-holed, boudler track! It was ok at first but then got quite annoying after a while as very uncomfortable! The hotel offers free taxis into town but the last one back is at 8.30pm and you have to pay 600 baht if you want them to pick you up later. Second disadvantage is the restaurant which although is nice, the menu selection is limited and it is hugely overpriced (i.e 400 baht for prawn green curry). The breakfast (buffet) was also not that great.

If they offered free taxis until midnight (which they should as paying £100 a night) and improved the dinner menu this would be an amazing hotel. As it is, I would recommend staying at the Thipwimarn instead as better location/restaurant and half the price of the Jamahkiri.

I tried to make a booking and got an unhelpful member of staff who would not giving me an answer when I asked for availability. She kept laughing with her friend and then hung up. I tried to call back but they kept hanging up on me. Not sure if this is the right way to run a hotel?

Also i was told on onother occasion when I called that this hotel is now closed. It seems a shame as it has had good reviews and it's web site looks quite good.

After looking at a few other places in Koh Tao, this one stuck out for its beauty and location. It looks like a Greek resort (because of its whitewashed bungalows) that scales the side of a cliff overlooking a gorgeous bay. It has a beautiful deck that sits amidst the rocks over the cove that can serve as your jumping point for snorkeling and kayaking. The lobby is an impressive dome that was also built around the large boulders that preceded the resort. This is a great place for travelers who are NOT looking to "rough it" in Koh Tao.
The rooms themselves are also very nice with lovely Thai decor and spa bathtubs. The beds were very comfortable and the linens comfy. Most rooms overlook the cove, which makes for a stunning, picturesque view.
Finally, the staff was amazing. They were extremely friendly and went out of their way to accommodate us. We were very impressed by the service!
Jamakhiri is highly recommended.
