“Awesome all rounder!”
Reviewed 24 October 2010

We had a fab time at Bans. The dive course was brilliant and beyond expectations. We stayed in a Hillside middle range room - it was quite a walk up hill and behind a building site but once you got there the view was second to none and the presentation of the room was excellent. I reckon building will be done in the next few months. Loved sitting on the balcony taking in the view and reading my book while my fella loved the abundance of movie channels! Our friends stayed in the free rooms that came with the course and would come and use our shower as they didnt get hot water or a fan - but there location was good. Right near the pool and down the bottom where the shops and bars are.

We stayed 2 nights at Ban's. The location is great and the resort itself looks really nice. We stayed in a pool side double which was fine but was in need of a revamp and the bathroom wasn't great. There were nicer rooms on the hillside for only slightly more but it was a fair walk from the main road up a very steep hill so we opted for the less nice poolside option.

Although the resort has 2 pools be warned that these are both being used for scuba lessons pretty much all day so if you just want a quick dip or to sunbathe you've got no chance.

There is a range of rooms, you should check the room before you unpack. We chose the family room which is very large and very nicely designed but the noise from the nearby 24 hr shops is very bad. The restaurant is nice.

Stayed there for 6 days for my Padi course. The only reason for staying is near the classroom and easy to go diving. Room was shabby, very basic facilities - Fan, cold water shower. Other facility all charge money, nothing is free. The staff did not clean your room unless you ask them to. There is an air-con machine under our window so it roars all night long, result in very bad sleep. The yard is very nice, lots of plant and fountains here and there. The instructor is great, very helpful and knowledgeable. Again, if you are here for the course, nothing to complain. If you are here for holiday, choose somewhere else.

As part of our honeymoon we decided to stay at one of the luxury rooms at Bans dive resort in Koh Tao. Room was beautiful, clean and well serviced. My husband was doing his Padi and i was doing a Padi refresh course and fun dives. There are cheaper rooms available for all budgets. And discounts if staying there while doing a course.

Firstly, the setting is perfect so Bans didn't have to do much more to impress. But their restaurant/Bar food was delicious and cheap (amazing shakes/smoothies with fresh fruit) and overlooking a slim stretch of beach which is home to the most incredible sunsets. The resort has a very chilled out vibe but if you are looking to party you don't have to look far. There is a mixture of all age groups. We're both early 30's and felt completely at ease in this backpacker gem. Emphasis is mostly on diving but we met plenty of people just there to chill out, enjoy, maybe just snorkel/kayak or sunbathe.
Bans' is one of the busiest dive resorts in the world and pumps out qualified divers like a sausage machine, but my husband experienced some issues equalising and was given individual attention after the normal student day was over. Staff very dedicated and professional and courses are great value due to the dive school competition on the island.

The island itself is amazing. By far our favourite of the three in the archipego. I was in thailand 10 years ago and it was Koh Tao that still held onto that one 'Je ne sais que'ou' that Thailand is renowned for. Koh Samui reminded me more of Bangkok but better for the shopping/bargain hunters.

If coming back to Thailand I would love to visit Koh Tao and would happily stay at Bans again. Something I don't normally say too lightly. Full marks and highly recommended.

Pros :
Fairly well organised
Good location on Sairee Beach
Decent rooms

Cons:
Pools are full of divers most of the time
Rooms near front of resort are subject to party noise into the wee hours
Killer hill walk to 'Hill View' rooms(but worth it)
Breakfast not included in room rate

Conclusion:
Overall a pretty good hotel if you are going to do some scuba training.

My boyfriend and I stayed in Ban's for 5 nights to do our Open Water diving course. We stayed in the hilltop suite - very clean, air conditioning worked perfect, cleaned daily. Only bad point is the walk up the massive hill to get there - though the view was pretty nice!!

We started our open water diving course the evening we arrived - instructor was great - great teacher and also a good laugh! I was very nervous about the diving as I'm a weak swimmer but he put me at ease straight away and was an excellent teacher!! There were 5 people in our group and we also had a guy training for his divemaster so 2 experienced divers with us at all times. Loved the diving so much we ended up doing our adventure dive certificate as well! Instructors/staff all very friendly and up for a bit of a laugh while also very safety conscious and experienced in diving. Also usually up for a few drinks in the evening after we came back off the dive!

Overall accommodation great, diving course brilliant and the whole place has a great atmosphere. May not be the cheapest place to do your dive course and it is the largest dive resort on the island but they still managed to make a very personal and fun experience!! Would recommend the place to anyone and we will definitely be going back!

Also would advise if going to koh tao for diving course to give yourselves a few more days than the diving course...you might find you love it and want to do more and even if you dont the diving involves very early starts so an extra few days to enjoy the night life is worth it!!
