“Rustic, adventurous, overpriced but GREAT diving outfit”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 January 2014

Lets start with the good. The dive outfit (Charm Churee divers) attached to the resort was awesome. Run by Lorne Harris, the diving was competely tailored to our needs and Lorne (and his right hand dive master, Mo) are soooo knowledgeable about the surrounding dive sites that you don't miss a thing underwater. When we were there the weather was pretty rough (most websites won't tell you this, but good weather in December CANNOT be guaranteed in the gulf of Thailand). It was still warm on land and in sea, but it was cloudy and diving off the beach was certainly an experience, but with Lorne and Mo on hand to help every step of the way it was pure fun. I would recommend diving with them even if you're staying somewhere else!
The location is awesome, right on the beach front, and the huts are spacious with large bathrooms and terraces. Also as you are in the south of the island there are no motorbikes noisily spluttering past, and it is certainly quiet at night which would have guaranteed a great night's sleep.
However, the bed we had was overly hard, the mosquito nets had lots of holes in it, the lights in the bathroom were dark and the one mirror was nowhere near the sink so shaving was near impossible. Mosquitos abound, although once bitten the itching wears off pretty quickly, unlike some other places.
Charm Churee hints itself to be an eco-resort, however that's not quite true. It's actually a hugely overpriced resort for what you get - it's more 'run-down chic' than rustic. At £200 per night you could stay in some much better hotels (and there's not even a swimming pool), I just think that Koh Tao as a whole is very overpriced. However, if you are a diver (and if youre reading this you probably are) then you won't mind mosquitos, or a million stairs, or steep hills, or the fact they have painted the dining area decking yellow to resemble an English seaside pier. What you'll want is to ask Lorne where you can find that school of five to ten thousand Scad fish that you can swim in. Seriously, they block out the sun...

Room Tip: Rooms 8 and 9 are perfect for those diving off the beach - they're the closest by far.

There are 71 stand alone huts. Only a handful actually have wonderful views of Jansom bay, and can easily access the bay. The rest are poorly located on a steep slope with partial sea views at best and a steep hike down to the beach / breakfast bar each day. We found ourselves walking up and down steps all day at this place! The rooms are not rustic. They are just cheaply built and old fashioned. The hotel advertises a 10min walk to town. This is deceiving as Suree village (the heart of the island) is actually more like 40min walk away. 'Town' is just where the pier and a few dive shops are located.

On the plus - Jansom bay is an amazing snorkelling spot. You don't need to be a guest to visit it however! If the conditions are right just hire a scooter and do a day trip to this beach.

Make no mistake, we loved Koh Tao! Just not Charm Churee..

This is not a typical vacation resort, more like a beautiful secluded village in the jungle. The rooms are spacious and quaint, with high ceilings, lots of power outlets, hot rain showers and an open layout with comfortable sitting spaces. Not sure about the other rooms but ours had a covered outdoor area which was good for talking and relaxing in the trees. Air-conditioning and bug nets, although we didn't need to use either as the weather was relatively cool. Only a 10 minute walk to town (you can do it along the beach, too!), which has all the lively bars, massage parlours and other restaurants. The layout of the resort itself is whimsical and natural, lots of trees and winding paths which are well lit at night. There is a diving center, spa and restaurants in case you didn't want to make the walk into town. The breakfast place is beautiful, directly overlooking the ocean and all the service staff were very kind and accomodating. The private beach is the best part! Masks and snorkels are available to borrow for free and you can snorkel right off the beach. The weather was not the best while we were here but I could tell it would be beautiful when the sun is shining, out of the windy monsoon season. This is a great place to stay if you want a secluded, authetic Thai vacation away from technology (wifi is available in public spaces only) which is only steps away from the beach and nightlife. Great for families, couples, and groups.

Room Tip: All the rooms are facing the sea... you can't go wrong!

A quick 4 days break from Bangkok, stayed with 6 friends in the 3 bedroom bungalow seafront.

Room is great! We stayed in the private bungalow further away from the beach but we got the sea access at the step instead. Great! just it was strong current at time we went so the sea itself was quite adventurous. We got the private pool to ourselves facing directly to the sea. What a view! however, from what I can see, there was no common pool area (only the small one for children on the beach), so if you stay in the non-bungalow room, you might not get the pool but the beach is beautiful and clear on the good day.

The room is clean, little 'rustic' but fully furnished with all the furniture and amenities. Comfy beds. All the rooms for us were excellent. My favourite was the little room downstair. Cozy and quiet. The location of the hotel is good if you stay further to the bed and port side (closer to town basically) so you wont have much problem getting around or popping to the shop. We stayed quite far away, literally the last room from the port. Very far for walking from the beach front or restaurant but it was a good trade off with the room. As the big group of friend trip, 3 bedrooms were perfect, I would say family-friendly as well.

Service was excellent! The main dining restaurant was well-serviced, same as the day-restaurant/bar. Everyone was extremely helpful. The food was delicious, as a Thai person, I say the food satisfied us well. Not only the dining experience that I was impress. Maintenance and admins as well. There are some problem with the pool lighting, the maintenance was sent in no time. Housekeeping was extremely friendly.

We had some problem on our side as well that we hired the kayaks. However some of us didnt make it to the beach front where we started due to the strong current, so we got off at our room instead. So we reported in the missing kayaks, they fully understood and more importantly sent their seamen to recover our kayaks back to the beach in the strong current. Very impress!

Overall, it was a great stay! The room and its view were impressive. Service was exceptional. Sadly, we didnt make the most of the sea as it was the strong current time. Surely, I would like to be back for sure!

This hotel is a little too "rustic".... the hotel is very out dated. We stayed in an Eco-room which was SO far away from everything around the resort (the location of the hotel itself is very secluded and they do not offer a free shuttle into town, which for the money, should have been offered. The rooms themselves are comically outdated, they look like your great grandmas house with doilies, floral print and cheap furniture and random decorations (like our Kleenex box wearing a couch costume). The rooms smell damp and muggy and the beds are not comfortable at all. Furthermore, the windows and doors are so dated that bugs are constantly in the room which is quite repulsive. The internet here is awful and only works 10% of the time and there are no televisions in the room. The showers are awful and spray sideways and are cold. The "beach" here is not good, extremely windy and rough and is secluded so basically no sun reaches it. The staff are decently friendly, however when we told them we had to check out a day early or we would miss our flight, they refused to offer a refund after much discussion. For the amount of money this hotel is per night, we didn't get our value, and if the cleverly positioned and deceiving photos on agoda actually did the rooms and hotel justice, we wouldn't have booked it at all. The restaurants are also nothing to write home about and way over priced for what they were, the breakfast that is included in the hotel is very sup-par and was not good. We saw many hotels that we wish we would have stayed at when we were making our 40 minute walks back and forth to town (because they offer no shuttle) and would not come back here nor recommend anyone else to stay here, this hotel needs a major overhaul.

Ko Tao is my first stop on a 10-days tour around islands in Thailand southern province. Having no ideas where to sleep, I decided to try Charm Churee Villa which is on the south-western part of Ko Tao. The location is secluded and peaceful, with its own small bay (Jamson Bay). Most of the bungalows are directly facing the sea, or at least sea-view which is the plus point. It's very quiet at night. I spent 3 days there and the Elvis bar was always deserted and I ended up having dinner in town.
To get to the main town of Mae Haad, there is a shortcut by the beach which take you about 12-minutes. I tried to leisure-walk to the other town at Sairee beach on the northwest which take about 35-minutes If you are a solo traveller, Sairee town is probably a better choice with plenty of cheap accommodation.

This is a place to chill anytime... beautiful rooms and bungalows overlooking Jansom Bay which is private beach to the village.
Wonderful restaurant serving only the freshest food.
Don't miss the Dive Center which is P.A.D.I. certified and has a great well-trained staff.
Ko Tau well known for its variety of divesites.
Everyone here was kind and helpful, especially at the front desk.
