“Only the location”
Reviewed 26 January 2013

We stayed in what can be no more described as a wooden shed on some rocks and for this were charged 1500 baht per night. To put into context we are now in an air con room in a hotel in Chumphon where we have fridge tv and 2 breakfasts all for the total of 580 baht. This so called resort with other guests while we were there complaining of rats running around their rooms which I must say we thankfully did not have is to my opinion highly overpriced. Not worth what they charge. The restaurant I must say does make good food but again is 2 -3 times more expensive than normal Thai street prices but yes that is often the case when eating at bungalow restaurants. The problem with this place is that once you are here there is little opportunity to venture away and eat at alternative outlets. The location however is spot on and if you dont mind feeling overcharged then its OK to be here.

We read about Sai Thong Resort in Lonely Planet, and it sounded right up our alley. We made the sweaty (but enjoyable) trek through the jungle and were blown away at the GORGEOUS two little beaches that grace the bay where Sai Thong Resort sits.

But upon entering the resort area, we could see that it needed some upkeep. The first area where the beach bungalows are is very swampy and marshy. Along the path to the reception, there is garbage and debris, and that continues on past the cafe and onto the far (beautiful) beach.

The woman at the reception barely acknowledged us, and even after she offered us a room, she continued to make us wait around until she had the time to show us to our bungalow. (In spite of us offering to check it out ourselves.)

At first glance, the small bungalow appeared just basic and musty, but we understand that you get what you pay for. We were exhausted from traveling all night and day however, and accepted the room. In spite of the (relatively) decent price, I would always hope that the room would be (to an extent) clean.

So wrong. The bathroom was so disgusting, as there were hundreds of large ants and termites, both dead and alive, covering the floor. In the morning we were met by two huge Tokay Geckos on the wall beside our door. I'm ok with lizards and other native animals, but these big guys are known to jump, bite, and bark if they feel that you are too close to them. ...and it's hard not to be in their space in a room of this size.

In the morning, they shut off the power to the resort, so we were left without any lights, (the rooms back from the beach are very dark even with the doors and front windows open) and the fan was rendered completely useless.

The restaurant is situated on a beautiful little patio, although the cloth floor seating gets damp and wet very quickly. The food is fantastic, quick to arrive, and it reasonably priced. We enjoyed both meals that we ordered there. However, we once again were met with what seemed restrained hostility by the receptionist/cook. We tend to be extremely polite and grateful people, and were always smiling and thanking her, but we only received scowls in return. Often she'd walk up, bang down our plates and then stalk away without any response to our thanks.

Anyways, we only stayed one night and were glad to leave. It's disappointing, because this place is in an ideal spot and has so much potential.

Room Tip: Pay a little more and stay in some of the nicer rooms. We never got to see any of the upgraded room...

I wish I could grade this resort higher. The Location, the view, the journey to get there and the restaurant make it excellent and we had a fantastic time, most of the time. At night however, we had a guest rat visit us. The first night he ate some food that we had kept in a bag on the bench inside the room. We told the staff who told us to hang any food we had up on hooks. "If there's no food, the rats will leave". We did this but the following night he managed to nibble the top of one of our rucksacks, and completely destroy one of my wife's sandals. While we are now able to see the funny side, at the time it just wasn't nice, so we asked to move. We'd been in the closest sea front lodge so were sad to leave for the view, but the second lodge was much cleaner, and we felt safer. Make sure you judge your trips out to the main pier well, as we we're caught out trying to get back, and had to walk the 40 minute coastal path, which was actually quite an experience. The water in our second room was off for most of the day, meaning we had to use the restaurant toilets. If the owners put just a little bit more effort in maintenance and cleanliness this would be a perfect break.

It really does have that magical feeling. It is beautiful, idyllic and if you catch it at the right time you are like the only ones in the world.
We were planning on staying here for 1 night and stayed here for 9! We were lucky, travelling Thailand without a plan in the world and chose to stay in the most beautiful places for however long we wanted. We weren't like the young german family staying there though who were meant to stay there for 3 nights and stayed for 18!!!!!!!!!
It's just perfect. The food is awesome and the family that run it are amazing. The room comes with a mosi net over the bed and a beautiful view. No, the rooms are not 5 star, they are thai huts with boards on the floors and walls and the bathroom doesn't have much of a ceiling and the fan comes on between 6pm and 6am when their part of the island gets electricity. HOWEVER, you don't come to Thailand to stay in some hotel room not knowing where on earth you are. Well, we didn't anyway. We were immersed in serenity and the beach was practically ours with just the calamari boats seen on the sea at night. They can't do enough for you, they give you great advice and the snorkelling equipment is free!
They are the best, go here and experience the most beautiful place on earth.

Room Tip: Bargain when you arrive, we got our room for 400baht.

We've spent only 2 nights at this resort in july 2012 but it was just what we were looking for: a quite, wonderful, peaceful and relaxing bit of paradise.
Reachable only by long tail boat or a 25 minutes trek through the jungle and the other resorts, sai thong is nested in one of the most beautiful beaches of the island, a small strip of white coral sand surrounded by lush vegetation and amazing sea, with tropical fish swimming just at your feet.
We had dinner here once and it was delicious, with a wonderful setting; same thing for breakfast: the yogurt with honey and fresh fruit was just amazing.
Our bungalow was a beach front one, 60 steps from the beach, simply decorated but functional. it had a fan and the AC unit, althought this last one didn't work, but it wasn't too much of an issue as the fan was ok for us.
We didn't think the resort and the beach were dirty or not taken care of, there were some rustic bins around and the staff was cleaning the beach and surrounding areas every morning, but it's not the resort's fault if some tourists are just so rude and disrespectful to leave their rubbish around.
The Banana Rock Bar nearby is a lovely and relaxing place for lunch overlooking the bay.

After seeing most of the beaches of the island; this is the nicest one! My room was simple and cheap. Little comfort. But hey; you are on a tropical island, everything else is decadent! We fished our own squid which was prepared for dinner. The food the Burmese people cook is excellent. The sunsets divine, snorkeling can be done just at the beach and the main village of the island is just a 25mins walk through other bungalow village on a rocky coast away! For those people who enjoy to get high there is the banana rock, o sort of pirate hangout for wannabe rastafarians Thai-style. If you are looking for the most romantic, down to earth place on Tao; this is it!

You get that magical feeling as soon as you enter with long tail boat. You are welcomed with a nice passageway full of greenery and pass on a bridge with flow of water running beneath. The resort has three private beaches all to yourself. There is also a very nice and relaxed bar to spend the night. Our hut had a terrace and was high up from the ground. We did not have a problem with insects. Food was great and prices were cheap. The resort is let down with its electric system. Electricity stops working at 6am and comes again at 6pm so you would need to get out of the hut at that time because it gets hot and dark. Still, all in all a unique experience
