“Affordable Luxury”
Reviewed 26 May 2014

We stayed three nights at Nangthong Bay after spending 4 nights in Karon (at the Centara Beach Resort). Had I known Nangthong was so wonderful I would have booked my entire trip at this hotel. We stayed two nights in a beach bungalow and one night in a garden bungalow. Both were quiet and offered either a full or partial view of the ocean.

Everything about this hotel just made me relaxed. The staff, the organized shuttles, the beach, the location to the town, the rooms, etc.… for the price it’s really hard to fault this hotel.

We were undecided between Karon and Khao Lak when we took this trip, so we decided to split our time between both. If you are also undecided then I highly suggest Khao Lak over Karon. The main shopping/eating street in Khao Lak is about a five minute walk from the hotel and has just as many restaurants, shops and bars as Karon. The Nangthong is directly on the beach, where in Karon there is only one hotel that is on the beach (most are across the street or a short walk away). And the beach in Khao Lak is clean and the water is nicer, in Karon you must rent old beach chairs and the beach and water are very dirty.

Thanks Nangthong for the wonderful experience! I hope we can visit again.

Room Tip: The beach bungalows have direct views to the ocean and are detached houses. Some of the garden view...

We were just here for 1 night after returning from a dive trip. We had a standard room and paid 2000 baht which at the time felt a little dear but in comparison to Phuket prices, where we subsequently headed, it was reasonable. The room was nice, clean and spacious, perhaps a little dark. It was a twin rather than a double but that was my fault for not checking - so specify which you want! The beach was lovely. As for the moat of sludge, it was a bit unattractive and mildly pongy, it was the very start of rainy season so I wondered if this issue resolved itself with some fresh rain to top it up! Our room wasn't near it so we only had to cross it on the way to the beach so it didn't impact on our stay.

This place would be a dream come true if only....it didn't have an open stream of black stinky sludge that runs right through the middle of the resort. Yes, this stream had a stench that was hard (impossible) to get away from especially since it ran past two sides of our bungalow, past the pool and then along the restaurant! The one night we were there I re-read all the reviews and couldn't believe nobody else reported it. It was definitely a deal breaker for us. We could smell it all night long with the doors and windows closed and the AC on. Otherwise this place would be a 4 star but maybe not because it would cost a lot more if the cesspool didn't run through the middle.

Otherwise: The pickup from the airport was fine for 1400 thb although the driver never said a word to us. The check in was easy and fairly pleasant (although not as pleasant as the check out). In general the place needs some attention to detail but we didn't expect it to be perfect. The pool needs a deep cleaning and has lots of black mold/algae along the top foot of the edge. I am not a clean freak but it wasn't comfortable swimming in it with the feeling that it wasn't clean. The location of the resort is great in terms of the beach, the proximity to town and restaurants, really everything but the stream! We left after the first night although they were willing to accommodate us in a garden bungalow further away from the stream. We ended up at Gerd and Noi's which was somewhat better although still not what we were looking for. All in all Khao Lak really wasn't the place for us!

We needed a short beak away from Phuket with a couple of kids and being still high season, prices were generally very high. Nangthing Bay Resort hd been recommended and with a family room at 3,000 baht, it was a good deal. THe price halves in low season.Difficult to contact on the phone but quick email confirmation. We changed our dates by one day and it was no problem.

The family room is huge. Two big bedrooms, one with balcony. One very large bathroom with separate bathroom and shower.

Really nice swimming pool, though the pool bar was never manned. Clean towels every day (bath and beach).

Only complaint is that the "klong" (waterway) is very dirty and smelly, probably due to the very dry weather Thailand has experienced recently.

This property was recommended by a diving website - great tip. The first 2 nights we had a garden bungalow with A/C, fan, good TV and outdoor shower. We left for a live aboard dive trip and came back to a beachfront bungalow - same amenities, just a better view. Both were good value, super clean and comfortable. The staff was friendly and helpful, even giving us a lift "up the hill" to the supermarket.

Two minor things could be improved - the food at the restaurant was Thai but quite bland, a bit more local flavor would go a long way. The other is that on the first night, instant coffee is provided in the room but after that there is no more... kind of silly as there is a kettle in the room and 3 in 1 coffee is pretty cheap. We had to get mugs from the restaurant and then go buy coffee - a bit inconvenient...

Room Tip: The bungalows are great - some have a filtered view of the ocean (big trees) which does block the st...

When we were looking at accomodation in Khao Lak for December, we read TA comments and this resort had pretty good ones plus it was not super expensive so we decided to book it.

We saw the beachfront bungalows and we gave ourselves a treat, the place was amazing! Looking at and hearing the sea from your bed, it is incredible. I was a bit worried at first because the shower was outside the bungalow, roofless, but it was kind of interesting experience, looking at the sky while having a shower.

On the morning we ate our breakfasts in the porch it had with chairs, facing the sea, relaxed... I miss it!

It is true that you had to close curtains as people could see inside your bungalow when passing by but there was not so many people around. Take care to not let doors open too much as it is in the middle of the nature and insects can go inside, specially at night with mosquitoes. Widows had this kind of rack so you could leave them open.

They gave you complimentary fruit the first day and two bottles of water each day, which was pretty nice.

Attention, DON'T DO THE LAUNDRY here, we did it and got some pieces stained in yellow. We told a guy in reception what happend and he told us to give the pieces back so they could send it again to the laundry place to wash it, but we were not confident enough and afraid they will make it worse, plus it didn't look like it was going to be removed (and it hasn't). He had to pay for the whole laundry bill despite of this which I think it was not correct from they side, at least they could have not charged us for the damaged clothes.

I also don't recommed to eat in the restaurant of the hotel, food is not good, it is quite pricey and there are plenty of better places in Khao Lak where you can eat.

If you can pay a bit more, get the beachfront bungalow.

Room Tip: If you can pay a bit more, get the beachfront bungalow.

We stayed in two adjoining rooms with two bathrooms. It was very good value for what we paid. The rooms were spacious and clean, the bathrooms were good quality with bath as well as shower. Air con and fan worked well. There were quite a lot of mosquitoes, we bought some spray from the supermarket and that sorted it out. The rooms were on the ground floor and overlooked the road. Foliage gave some privacy but a higher floor would probably have been better, or you can pay more for a sea view. The pool is lovely and the beach even lovelier. We ate at the resort a few times and it's pleasant sitting by the sea, but there are lots of other places to try. Walk up the beach to the left and you can try out the posher resort restaurants and bars, or turn right and walk for 10 mins and you come to a delightful selection of cheaper beach cafes.
