what you would expect from a 2-3 star hotel

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 14 Jul 2009
I had pretty low expectations for this hotel, so my rating here is average even though the rooms and service in general was pretty much 2-3 star. Old old rooms, carpets obviously hasnt been renewed in a while, eatable breakfast (not fantastic), but not too expensive at THB 480 for my standards. Only plus point is the location :)

Im sure you can find other places to stay in phitsanulok.

We're backapckers, so our standards aren't that high. We caught the train to Phitsanulok and hadn't prebooked a hotel so when we emerged from the train station and saw this hotel a few hundred metres away we thought we'd try our luck there first. They agreed to a good price for us so we stayed a couple of nights and have no complaints. Yes, the whole place (rooms included) are quite tired and dated but we ended up in a room where everything worked OK and it was indeed nice and big. Lots of street food vendors and 7/11 type stores are very close by so we had all our needs met for a fair price. Another bonus, our laptop connected to WIFI from somewhere in the area, I don't know where, but it worked, so we were stoked about that.

Never stay at Amarin Nakorn Hotel in Phitsanulok. To give a rundown of the overpriced disaster:

* the lift broke down (we were on the 10th floor)
* the hot water tap broke while the water was gushing
* They had no more taps so we had to move rooms
* the hot water was luke warm
* the sink plug broke
* The sink plug leaked
* the carpet came loose
* the toilet leaked

the staff could not understand much English but seemed resigned to the fact that they worked in a lemon; an expensive lemon

We chose the hotel as it was located in the centre of town and near the train station for our later departure (less than 5 min walk). The hotel is large with a huge and well presented reception. We were first given a room that had broken beds and asked to move to another. We picked one of two we were shown that had slightly better beds. All rooms were twin beds.

The room was huge with more than enough room for two large rucksacks, and the bathroom was a good size too. The room was well shaded from the sun but still had a good amount of light coming through the windows, which opened or you had a/c, which also worked well. There was a fridge with complimentary drinking water, a large wardrobe and tv (no english channels though). There is also a desk with a desk light. The bathroom had a large sink area with plenty of storage space and good light.

I imagine it used to look quite good when it was first done up, but now it is tired and isn't very well looked after. The bath and shower were dirty from ages of not being cleaned well and there was hair and fluff on the bathroom floor. We also discovered that it is possible to have an ant problem in your bathroom on the 9th floor of a hotel.

The hotel has a restaurant and a karaoke bar, neither of which we used. We ate quite a bit at a restaurant directly opposite the main entrance, which I would recommend if I could remember the name!

Although run down and a bit dirty, the staff were more than helpful and very nice to us. They allowed us to leave our bags there after we checked out and for us to sit in the lobby until our train left at 1.30am. They can tell you where anything is, arrange laundry (a tad pricey), where to hire a motorbike, etc although a phrase book may be useful as not everyone's english is very good.

For:
- Large rooms
- Very friendly and helpful staff
- Good location central to the town
- Good source of information

Against:
- Seems to be only twin room available and beds we saw weren't in good condition
- Quite a walk to get to an internet cafe (across a bridge over the river)
- Not very clean (housekeeping seem to only make your bed for you)
