This was the worst hotel on our tour of Tunisia. Generally tired and drab with an ensuite which smelt so much you had to hold your breath. The continental breakfast, on the other hand was quite good.

As most people seem to visit Kairouan as a day trip from the coast, there isn't a great deal of choice when it comes to hotels. The Splendid is probably the best option - prices are reasonable, rooms are fairly clean and en-suite, and the location is excellent, very close to the medina. There are also a couple of very tasty (and cheap) local restaurants nearby, which reception can point you to. Breakfast in the attached restaurant is a bit disappointing. There is also a very raucous bar attached to the hotel, which was quite surprising for us considering Kairouan's status as a holy city!

If you're driving, be prepared - Kairouan seemed to have no signs or street names anywhere, it was only complete luck that saw us drive past the hotel!

Overall not a bad little place if you are looking for the basics. We had a bit of trouble reserving a room, the fax # didn't work, so we had to call directly using our broken french, but it worked out ok. My friend and I stayed at the Hotel Splendid toward the end of a 10 day trip across Tunisia. Good sized rooms, fairly clean on the surface, nice private bathroom, even had a tv that we watched bad Italian game shows on which was a luxury for our price range. The negative aspects were the streets around the hotel are a bit dark at night (even though the police station is across the street) and the beds were kind of gross. We always check for bedbugs, usually can tell in a few seconds by looking under the sheets and mattress--but we weren't sure because under the top sheet the bed itself was quite dirty with black specks and hair. We spent the first hour or so convinced we were infested, but after the first night we didn't notice any bites so we were in the clear. Its a budget hotel in a touristy Tunisian town, so we had no illusions of 5 star quality, but it took us a while to get used to it. It was a good location to see the Medina and other locale attractions--and there weren't many other options for hotels in our price range, so it was fine. The staff was nice overall and the morning breakfast was good too.

Spend 8 days travelling around Tunisia and this was the best hotel i stayed in. Spent 2 nights here and used it as a base for Djemm and Mahdia. Very simple breakfast. Rooms spacious and clean. Quiet outside. Great location. For my single i paid 30 dinar or $26. See my 5 pics.

This hotel is perfect for the budget traveler! It's nothing fancy, nor is it trying to be. It's just a place to sleep for the night, and it was perfectly fine for my boyfriend and me for one night.

We first looked at the Hotel Tunisia, about one block away on a main drag, and found that although the rooms were large, it was dark, depressing, and outdated -- and frankly a little creepy -- so we chose not to stay there. Based on a guidebook recommendation, we walked down a very quiet little side street and found the charming Hotel Splendid. We asked to see a room and were very satisfied to find a light and airy, white and turquoise bedroom with local art on the walls and a nice view out to a leafy tree along the street. It's only a five minute walk to the old city so it's also well located.

Again, it's nothing fancy, but it was perfectly comfortable and clean, the staff was very nice and helpful, and it was cheap, at approximately $25/night for both of us. This included a continental breakfast in the morning in the hotel "restaurant" (a stale chocolate croissant but very tasty coffee and French bread).

I would recommend to anyone looking for simple and clean accomodations.

Stayed here w/ a student tour group for a night. The town was amazing & the locals extremely helpful. The hotel was actually one of the down points. Really great location though- a short walk from all major sights in town, as well as lively local-frequented cafes.

Here's what happened- they offered take-out laundry service for us, and several of us who took them up on the offer ended up missing articles of clothing. Since we were only there for one night there really wasn't anything we could do. I lost a favorite shirt of mine. Also, one person in our party had her shoes stolen from outside of her bedroom door. Of course, I would never advise anyone to leave their shoes in the hall anywhere, but it is a small hotel and it should be easy to monitor everyone who comes and goes. The hotel wasn't responsible, but they were not that concerned either.

Other than that, the rooms are pretty plain, but I did get a nice one overlooking the street.

I would recommend this hotel for its location, but will certainly suggest that you keep an eye on your belongings while there.

Great little hotel with all the necessary amenities. Well located just a short walk from the medina and close to restaurants. Friendly pleasant staff. Our room had a phone and big bathtub. Try Cafe Sabra around the corner for delicious hearty Tunisian favourites. I would recommend this place and would stay again.
