The Rex is a charmingly old-fashioned hotel just off the Rambla de los Argentinos, which runs along the waterfront. It was spotlessly clean and comfortable, and the staff were particularly helpful and friendly. We didn't use the indoor pool, as the weather was excellent and the beach was nearby, but we enjoyed the excellent buffet breakfast. The hotel's public areas – lobby, lounge, restaurant – are airy and comfortable, and the WiFi signal in our room was excellent. We also appreciated having a full size fridge.
Piriápolis is a lovely and intriguing town, developed in the late 19th century by a Uruguayan magnate, Francisco Piria, whose vision was to create a resort that would rival those found in Europe, and the place retains a vaguely French feel. There are plenty of bars and restaurants, and the Ramble de los Argentinos is very lively in the evenings, with tango dancers, street entertainers and local artisans selling their wares on the pavements.
It's infinitely more civilised than the hideously over-developed Punta del Este, which is an hour or so away by road.More
