A fortress would normally reveals some aspirations of the owner, the motives and the expectations. Walking inside this fortress, and listening to the briefing, one can feel and understand the aspiration on the King that build this fortress. There are rooms for family members, visitors room, visiting area, and an a balcony specifically built for the the princess to watch the activities on the arena down there.

Today, these rooms has turned into outlets selling items and souvenirs for tourist. You should be extra careful during winter or wet days as the path is a bit slippery.

Ark Fortress or Ark Citadel were the two names of the same monument. It took us to walk there some 30 minutes from our hotel in Bukhara. The fortress was of such a colossal magnitude that it was impossible to fit it all in a single snap. Soon after entering the main gate, we purchased two entry tickets for 13,000/- Soums. Before climbing-up the Museum, we went inside a very graceful Mosque and then to a vast 'open-air' compound. The Management had opened a small portion of the fortress for tourists or locals while most of it was sealed permanently. View of Bukhara from the top of the fortress was fabulously picturesque specially in an excellent weather in October. There were a number of souvenir shops with variable prices, sufficiently enough for casual window shopping alone. Not to be missed at any cost.

When the high point for me is the study of the Uzbek has installation maps then something is amiss.
Dowdy exhibits i'm dirty glass cases with almost no interpretation. Limited access to the site, the central Throne room impressive but totally empty and devoid of explanation. No clarity of what was open. Some interesting old photos and museum pieces.
Admission price doesn't worry you after the disappointment.
View from outside promises great things, but not delivered.

The Ark Fortress is as old as Bukhara itself. The founding of the original fortress has been lost in time but it was certainly at the centre of the developing medieval town. The first fortress was built in the seventh century, but has been rebuilt many times since. By the 16th century, the Ark had grown to house, not only the Emir, his family and friends, but also the whole range of government departments, a palace, harem, throne room, treasury, dungeon and slave quarters amongst others. Today it houses mainly museums and to be honest, although fairly interesting the whole place doesn't have much to offer in terms of architecture and history compared to other sights in Bukhara. The Fort is fairly impressive from the outside but overall slightly disappointing.

The colossal fort, even though impressive from the outside and fairly well maintained inside, does not have much to offer. A couple of museums, located inside, are rather lame. However, one can get a nice view of the city from the top.
