“Lovely area with a Mediterranean feel to it”

This old historic area (like all in shakhristan Bukhara are) consists of a square, pool and parallel channels with some cafes. It is not hard to imagine how it would have looked like during its prime. Definitely worth a visit, both during daytime and at night.

The place is like a hang-out place for tourists and locals. It's a place where one could check out Khodja Nasreddeen (Nasreddin Afandi) statue, enjoy the mosaic and the architecture of two old madrasahs - Nodira Divonbeghi, and Kukeldash, as well as tireless ducks swimming in the pool, When it's warm, there are cafes with tables around the pool offering national cuisine, refreshing tea and beers. You won't miss it if your hotel is in the Old Town, or if you're just visiting this part of Bukhara.

If you are a fan of weddings, and lucky enough, you'll see plenty of couples walking around Lyabi-Hauz and taking pictures arouтв this landmark.

This is a truly beautiful place and in the main remains unspoilt. The buildings all around the pool are light very subtly in the evening and the whole area becomes quite magical. There is a couple of places to sit and have a drink and watch the world go by - perfect setting.

Our hotel in Bukhara was bang on Lyab-i-Hauz and this therefore, was our 'Starting Point' to explore the city Monuments. Lyab-i-Hauz is an 'Open Water-Pond' with thickly shaded park in the east where a statue of Khodja Naseeruddin was placed with his tamed mule. Adjacent to the park was Nadir Devon Begi Madrasa, famous for 'Folklore & Costume Dance Shows'. North of the Pond is 'Choikhana (Tea House) and little up the stairs, stood Kukeldash Madrasa with traditional gift-shops and occasional 'Puppet Shows', cancelled frequently. In immediate south were impressive clay models of camels with a row of hotels, Fast Food Restaurant, Coffee-Shop and a nice Bakery. The space in the western vicinity is relatively open. The best of Lyab-i-Hauz, in our opinion were 'State-Protected' trees, planted centuries ago. Despite minus 4 degrees below freezing point, we found it a nice spot in the late evening to relax in leisure, watch foreign tourists and sip 'Kehwa' (Green Tea) in the open. Ample food was available in the surroundings yet the best place for meals, we discovered was 'Chenor Restaurant', some 100 meters east of Lyab-i-Hauz. No dearth of transport to travel to any part of Bukhara.
