This was the prison connected with the Ark. it housed several famous prisoners like the British officers Stoddart and Conolly. Stoddart had the misfortune of not pleasing the Amir with his gifts and Conlly's fault was that he came to get his friend released. These poor prisoners were kept in snake and scorpion pits. if they survived they were made to dig their own graves and then beheaded.

Zindan does have some historical importance, but as a sight its not as interesting as it sounds. It is known for being a prison where the prisoners where kept in a deep pit. Stoddart and Connolly sent some time here before they were eventually killed. Its an interesting place, but very hard to get too excited when you are actually there.

This complex is small but interesting. You can see the disgusting way in which prisoners were treated - including two unlucky English visitors; Conolly and Stoddart. There is some memorabilia here but it is a bit lacking. The best part is the black hole from which there was no escape. there is a small entry fee and the friendly manager will answer all your questions.

This is the Emir's famous prison where offenders (amongst them, Stoddart and Connolly) we kept in appalling conditions.

So the Ark was closed when we visited and we walked around the walls to the left of the main entrance through the town rubbish dump until we got to the Zindan. An Ark in miniature in appearanc and after you go up the steps to the entrance and pay the fee for cameras you enter a tiny courtyard. There are four of 5 cell areas (including the famous flea pit). Interesting and compact. They are extending the small museum area and collection and in a year or two this will become a must see. As it is now itis a should be seen,.
