Located at Lyabi Hauz, this medresse used to be the largest of its kind in Cenral Asia and an important part of Bukhara as a religious centre. It was built around 16th century. Well worth a visit.

Up the stairs from Lyab-i-Hauz in the north was located 'Kukeldosh Madrasah', famous to hold 'Puppet Shows' inside a studio within the premises. No entry charges for the Madrasah but 7000/- per person to see a 'Puppet-Show'. We went there twice to watch advertised 'English Version Puppet Show' but to our dismay it was repeatedly cancelled. The studio was usually locked at day time and the management was completely invisible from the scene. The Madrasah somehow, didn't attract many visitors but we certainly were the last to miss it. Soon after entering the gate, we saw aesthetically decorated souvenir shops, mostly run by equally pretty and friendly young Uzbek girls. Madrasah was in near vicinity of our hotel, we both therefore, occasionally sneaked into it for window-shopping. Walking west-ward on the main road in-front of the Madrasah, we could enter the 'Trading-Domes' of Bukhara. Going into this madrasah was never a bad experience.

Located at the north of Lab-i Hauz (around the pond) ensemble, it is has the most imposing facade in Buchara. All covered with excuisite majolicas, no glue or nails, the entrance gate is 80x60m, huge, imposing! And on the top, one can see two marvelous phoenix birds with long tails, facing each other, over the curve of the gate! No words to describe the feeling!..
