“Clean, comfortable, helpful...great base to explore the beautiful surroundings”
Reviewed 29 April 2014

It's possible to see this hotel from the train station, however you have to walk around and over the tracks by a little road which takes approximately 10-15 minutes - the roads are completely safe and it's an easy, flat walk.

Even though I arrived at just after 9am, well before the check in time, I was warmly welcomed, invited to sit down while the necessary paperwork was completed, before promptly being shown to my room, already cleaned and awaiting my arrival. Great start.

It got even better when I ordered a fabulous apple pancake (seriously tasty - and massive) and then asked for advice about things to do in the area - although the answer is 'not a lot', the staff went through everything I could do within the town including the local market and the small church, and then took me through the various options for exploring the surrounding countryside - lots of helpful information without being pushy in the slightest.

The rooms are spacious and spotlessly clean, with air conditioning, a fan, lockable wardrobe, fridge and tv. The beds were very comfortable and again, spotlessly clean. My room overlooked the railway station and on the first night I did wake up with a start at the sound of a train's horn directly outside my window; however this was the only disturbance in three nights at the location.

Breakfast is included and there is a wide range of both Asian and Western dishes available to choose from - all delicious-looking, though I stuck with my favourite - the apple pancake, each morning.

The staff at this hotel only add to the good points - warm, friendly, helpful...even dropping me off at the train station on the back of their moped when it was time to leave with a complimentary bottle of water for the journey (though I'm still not sure how both my bags, me and the lovely staff member were able to fit on the bike...!)

Actually they are located behind the station about a 15 min walk. They gave us a ride to station in the morning and would have picked us up if they had known we were coming. Room nice and clean. Good breakfast and helpful front desk. We just stayed one night. Pretty quiet town.

HOT WATER!!! HOT, HOT, HOT WATER!!!

Our room was large and very clean, and the cable TV had some great English channels. The staff spoke amazing English, and whilst the food was a little pricey, it was delicious. And the water was hot!

Would happily stay ahain

We really enjoyed our stay at Canh Dieu hotel. The staff were very helpful and always available to answer our queries. The room was nice; clean and comfortable, and with a good view. It was well located for the train station, market and some nearby restaurants. We were given free water, a fruit shake and a lift to the station when we left-much appreciated. We organised a day trip to Cuc Phuong, and were driven by the owner of the hotel. And the cost of the room was very reasonable. Many thanks!

Room Tip: With the mountain view room you get a little balcony to enjoy the room

We reached Ninh Binh bus station at 3.45pm local time and were approached by a few Xe om riders looking to send us to our lodging. As both of us are rather clueless, i gave them an address of a random hotel which i scribbled down the previous night.

Upon reaching the hotel, the girlfriend decided on a US$15 room which include breakfast. The hotel was called 'Canh Dieu' which means 'kite'. It was a rather strange choice of name but this family-run hotel was brilliant which partly is due to the service render by Hung, the owner's son.

He spoke fluent English and was always ready to assist without being intrusive or pressurizing. One of my biggest pet peeve about traveling is to have people constantly pestering and pressuring me to sign up for local tours or to purchase something.

The hotel is located on a quiet street and 10 - 15 minutes walk away from the train station.
We stayed at a room on the second level with the rail way track at our back. However this wasn't an issue as we slept well during our stay. Room was basic but it does the job.

On our first day of arrival we rented a bicycle for the rest of the day and went exploring around the city as it was too late to head out of the city. We pass by a number of houses and noticed that there were Chinese words such as ('财' - wealth) being casted on the metal gates and symbol of ('囍' - double happiness) being used at a local wedding. We knew there were similarity in the traditions between Vietnamese and Chinese but we did not expect the close likeness. The girlfriend who is more well versed in mandarin also spotted that some of the mandarin characters which are written on the wall of a temple are strangely wrong but the entire sentence on a whole is still coherent.

We spoke to Hung when we were back in the hotel and upon further questioning, we finally understand that Vietnam was a vassal state of China eons ago, which explain the similarity between some traditions and customs. As the result of this close ties, Vietnamese writings are also derived from the Chinese characters but further simplified for their own understanding. Despite having a similar writing system with China, Vietnamese converse in their own language consisting of 6 tones. Mandarin speakers spoke with 4 tones, and Cantonese dialect is spoken with 9 tones.

The modern Vietnamese writing which was based on Latin script was developed by the Portuguese Jesuit missionaries, which founded its way into Vietnam during the 17th century. However it was only gradually taken up by the people in the 19th century when the French implement it, as a way of westernising the country.

On our second day, we had breakfast which was included in the room rate. It was a simple breakfast but very delicious. As we only rented the room for one night, we checked out after our breakfast and rented a motorbike for our excursion to Tam Coc, Mua Cave and Phat Diem Cathedral. When we were back in the evening, it was very nice for Hung to provide us a room to shower before we left to catch our sleeper train.

We went without any expectations but we left with great experience. Great pricing, great owner, great stay.

First the people are lovely - very friendly, yes we got a free smoothie during our stay and they also gave us a free lift to the station the morning we left which was nice. Generally the people are really nice.

Room wise we had issues on the first night - room 502 has a lot of damp. And I mean a lot - the walls were physically wet and there were several areas of mould on the walls and ceiling. Hot water was intermittent in this room and so was the wifi.
At 3:30am a very large group of people - vietnamese - decided to have what can only be described as a party in the corridor. No idea what was going on but there were around 20 people shouting and screaming in the corridor for around 45minutes that night.
We changed rooms for the second night and that was absolutely fine. If we had been given that room from the start then I wouldn't think there was a problem and would probably have given the place a 4.
I wasn't too keen on the location - the road outside has no street lighting, for restaurants go round to the area immediately beside the station.
We took a tour with the hotel to Cuc Phuong national park, was good value and would recommend as long as it's good weather.
Overall I think it's a good hotel as long as you get a good room.

We stayed here 5 nights booked through Agoda - £9 per night inc breakfast for 2. We arrived in town at 5am from a night bus. We rang the door bell of the hotel and the young man welcomed us in - got us Ginger Teas and had our room ready as promised for 8am! Room was great - 206 - large, twin room with lockable storage, TV, fridge, wifi, AC, heater, fan, Western bathroom with hot shower, 2 double beds, complimentary toiletries and balcony. He even gave us free Mango smoothies on 3 nights! Breakfast was standard - pancakes or eggs with noodle soups and bread plus teas, coffee etc. Ate there 1 night - beef vegetables/rice and food was fine. They did laundry (twice) for 30k VND per kilo. Hired bicycles 3 days for $2.50 each per day. Staff were helpful and friendly, nothing was too much trouble - even gave us water for our trip to Cat Ba (after getting breakfast done at 6am for us!) - located in quiet street backing on to railway line. Absolutely Incredible service and value - Highly Recommended

Room Tip: 206, 306 - twin rooms - have best wifi and balcony
