Ninh Binh - had never heard of it and hadn't wanted to go to it but after some advice from a friend we booked into the only five star resort in the area and we weren't disappointed. The whole resort is built around a traditional Vietnamese village with the main communal hut being the reception bar restaurant etc and then flowing out behind are clusters of villas. Rooms are stunning, high ceilings, exposed timber and stylishly decorated. Couple of great pools and a huge spa. The area is famous for these amazing rivers and caves and they are just that.

Room Tip: if you're a family there are only two clusters that share a communal pool, ask for these.

We had lunch here one day and it was one of the best meals we had during our 3 weeks in Vietnam. An Australian is the head chef there at the moment.
Staff were friendly and the place looked amazing. Wish we were able to stay.

A very comfortable place with very spacious room. Last time I stayed at the deluxe room and really enjoyed the facilities in room very much. Breakfast was also good. Hope can come back again to Emeralda Ninh Binh in the future.

The night before we arrived at Emeralda we had slept on a mattress on the floor with 25 Vietnamese teenagers all high on energy drinks.....................
We stayed for five nights at Emeralda at the beginning of our north-south month long stay in VietNam. All the other reviews seem to talk about the beautiful scenery, fantastic rooms and great facililties. The location of the resort is in the middle of a lot of fantastic activities like the Caves and the National Park. AND, we agree with them all! [And saw it all too]
But what we think is the highlight of this place [like so many other hotels/resorts in VietNam] is the people who are caring for you. The staff are what makes this place so sensational. They give so much of themselves to ensure you enjoy your stay at Emeralda. From the 'doormen', the gardeners, wait staff to the young fella by the swimming pool, they all work so hard to please and all with a smile; especially when we kept trying out our basic Vietnamese.
We saw on more than a couple of occassions where staff were dealing with 'ungrateful' guests or trying to solve a difficult situation and they do so without complaint or sour look BUT WITH GRACIOUNESS AND A SMILE. We witnessed a full function being set up for 50 guests, all beautifully laid out cutlery and linen with banners and flowers, all having to be moved elsewhere because the client decided at the very last minute to change his/her mind. All that hard work for what? Just to have to dismantle everything and redo it again in another location of the resort immediately.
And I disagree with comments about the food/menu. We ate at the Resort every night and thought it fabulous, enjoying terrific Vietnamese meals with beautiful scenery. [Thanks Matt and Ursula! and our regular wait staff Loan and Huong - Xin chao nhieu!]
Even when we had to leave early for HaNoi, Cristy organised a little travel brekkie for us to eat in the car.
Thank You EVERYONE for a trip to Van Long/Ninh Binh that we won't ever forget.

What a great place . Fantastic rooms and service. Excellent location and quiet to boot . We only stayed for 2 nights. Wishe we had stayed for longer. The van long reserve is amazing for riding or for a boat trip.
Only negatives were: a little expensive for the car pick up from the train station.

Very smoky due to burning rice crop waste- not the resorts fault- but when you can't see the amazing scenery for smoke haze then tourist operators need to speak up. Find another use for rice stubble instead of smoking the place out

I agree with what 'GTan_11' had to say.

Emeralda was a very good break from the hustle and bustle of the 'Hanoi/ Halong Bay shuffle'...
At Emeralda we had the opportunity to relax in style and venture out on tours like Tam Coc etc. ... Then come back to relax again.

We used Emeralda (4 days) as our 'last port of call' in Vietnam so that we could take a breather at the end of a very hectic but wonderful visit to Vietnam... AND IT WORKED !!!

Everyone loves Cristy at the front desk... And I can see why... She is always 'on the ball' with what is happening and what you might need. (busy girl)
But I think the lobby area needs someone like Long (aka Steven from the restaurant) to work in the lobby like a Concierge or something.... I found myself tracking him down just so I could ask him questions about the resort and it's surroundings. (because Christy was always very busy, and I did not want to take up any more of her time)...
If Long didn't know the answer he would promptly find out... plus ... he is one hell of a character.

Other than that... I will use Emeralda on the next visit to Vietnam. (for the wind down period)

Thuy the tour guide was great also... he has a bit of a 'dry humor' and is on the ball as far as the tour / guide business is concerned.

If Long/Steven worked in reception I would give this place 5 stars.

PS ... it looks like 'GTan_11's photos are better than mine, so I'll leave you with just two.
One shows the size of the backdrop at Emeralda... and the other is what it is like just outside the gate. (very Vietnamish)... Plus we only paid $130 per night... so I don't know why 'Jacinta398' paid $220 ???

After the rigors of Sapa, the splendor of Halong Bay and the bustle of Hanoi, we decided to spend the last 3 nights of our family holiday at the Emeralda in Ninh Binh in mid-April. Cristy, the front office manager, was very helpful and gave good advice over the email in arranging our transport from Halong Bay to Ninh Binh, a 4 hour trip across at least a few provinces. Fortunately the resort’s vehicle was a new and comfortable 4WD.

The Emeralda is a lavishly designed eco-style resort with most of the luxury amenities one could expect. The impressive main lobby resembles the summer palace of some modern day emperor and we were wowed by the deluxe villa we stayed in which had a high roof, carved wooden beams, huge king sized bed and a well appointed bath area with an enjoyable outdoor shower and small private garden.

We had most of our meals at the only restaurant in the resort which served a reasonable but not huge range of local and western dishes. If we stayed for more than 3 or 4 days, we would be looking for other options. The food was generally tasty and well prepared. I appreciated the restaurant’s organic based ethos. The service was prompt and we greatly enjoyed the breakfast spread which included delicious local fruit jams made by the chef. I did have an issue about the restaurant wanting to charge me corkage for bringing my own bottle of single malt to dinner one night. As it was not a brand that they stocked and I was the only one drinking, it would’ve been a nice gesture if they graciously waived any extra charges, which to their credit they eventually did.

The heated indoor pool was large and a hit with my young daughters. The even bigger outdoor pool and magnificent surrounding scenery with limestone hills in the distance looked very inviting but unfortunately the water was too chilly to swim in. The gym was also spacious and well equipped with high quality equipment which, to me, shows fine attention to detail.

At Ninh Binh, I would recommend taking some day trips to see the limestone karsts in Tam Coc and Van Long nature reserve on sampans. Cristy efficiently arranged our tours around Ninh Binh. We used the resort’s car with a driver and guide who took us around comfortably and safely. Thuy, the resort’s tour manager and our guide was friendly and informative and brought us right into a beautiful rice field and old temple after our Tam Coc boat ride. It was certainly quite touristy at Tam Coc, but that shouldn’t detract from the beauty of the scenery and mountains. Cristy kindly provided us with bicycles and a colleague to guide us to the nearby Van Long nature reserve. This is well worth visiting and a lot less packed than Tam Coc.

Finally a word about the resort's spa. We were warmly greeted at the spa which was pleasant and spacious. I personally felt that the masseurs seemed a little inexperienced and not as skillful and confident as one would expect, especially for the price. On the other hand, my daughters loved the mani-pedi treatment and massage!

Overall, this was an enjoyable and welcoming resort. The staff are also friendly and helpful. The journey to Emeralda from Hanoi is a little long and can be hairy at times as most of the roads are still single lane affairs (although new or wider roads are being constructed) but if you are looking for a great place to relax and unwind in Vietnam without the hustle and bustle of a big city, I think it’s well worth the trip.
