“Decent, clean, friendly staff”
Reviewed 7 January 2014 via mobile

Most of the reviews here are by Russians or Vietnamese tourists, so here's a European perspective!

We arrived by bus from Long Hai and walked in without a reservation. We were able to get a room for $50. Lovely room, well decorated, double bed, great bathroom, free fast wifi, fridge, hair dryer, TV.

The staff speak varying levels of English, from none by the pool to actually quite good at the reception desk. A little sign language works wonders.

The resort is spread over both sides of the main road (it's not busy) with rooms up some steps in the hillside and the restaurant and pool by the sea.

The pool is fine, a little small and full if Russians.
The small private beach has hard packed sand and loads if black boulders, but there are loungers and towels available.

The restaurant has a massive seafood range, which was very tasty! Pizza was ok, don't bother with the other 'western' food. You can go crazy and have fried frog or oyster porridge, but we weren't that adventurous!

You can get massages, and there is a spa.

You can walk to the nearby Giant Jesus statue, Black Pearl Bar (live music), Gazebo (trendy cocktail bar which does a full English breakfast). Or rent a scooter and see more of Vung Tau.

So - yes it's fine, has some charm, with some attempt to cater for westerners. Our room was very comfortable, and we enjoyed our short stay before catching the boat to Con Dao.

Stayed at the Lan Rung for 1 night. Superb location with safe but small beach with life guards in attendance. Lovely vista and breeze off the Ocean. The site has a lovely garden and shady canopy over. The staff are friendly and helpful and the aura is peaceful and quiet even with many families present. There are many nooks and crannies in the garden for some quiet time

Room Tip: Ask for room 404

We stayed in a hillside family room.

The good - the room was large and clean. The bathroom was massive. Reception (especially on the hill side of the road) and pool staff were lovely: very friendly and efficient. The pool isn't large but is nice and has plenty of sun loungers.

The not-so-good - we didn't know when booking that the room was on the other side of the road! The driveway up to the rooms is very steep, then there are many, many steps to get up to the rooms. There was only one tiny window in the room that made it very dark. The terrace bar/restaurant staff did not have a good attitude.

The food - we ate lunch on the terrace. It all seemed like to much hard work for the staff to find us a table to start with, then service was slow and unhelpful. One meal didn't arrive and when we queried it (after finishing the others), were told with an eye-roll that the kitchen couldn't / hadn't made it and it would take 35 minutes if they made it now. We ordered another meal instead then, 5 minutes later, the original meal showed up. The one we ordered instead never did arrive. It's a lovely location but the staff there really spoiled it for us. It's also quite expensive for decent, but nothing special, food.

Breakfast - buffet breakfast was included. The staff were very nice and efficient - used plates were collected almost before you'd put your cutlery down! A problem for me (can't eat seafood) was that it was in the restaurant that serves seafood for lunch and dinner so did smell somewhat fishy. We could have sat outside but then would have been surrounded by smokers instead. Breakfast was almost entirely an Asian breakfast with plenty of choice of dishes, many of which were (unfortunately for me, but popular with most) seafood.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the sea side of the road.

We booked this resort 6 months ago, and then got worried when we read some recent Tripadvisor reviews. Our fears were unfounded. The location is perfect, easy walking distance from the ferry and either to front beach or back beach. It is absolute beach front, rocky yes, but still by the sea, which meant refreshing breezes. Sitting poolside you can see Vietnamese fishing boats passing along with the odd ship or tanker and occasionally an odd wave or two comes crashing over the sea wall, but it all adds to the atmosphere . The staff are very friendly, their English is far better than my non-existent Vietnamese, and the food and service is first rate. When booking our room, I requested 'high floor' and we have the highest floor on the section across the road. This means our own private balcony terrace with fabulous sea views, but we do have to cross the fairly quiet road and go up four flights do stairs. But the view and privacy is worth it, even though the restaurants and pool are on the other side of the road. As for the dredge moored off the coast that a few people complained about, it is not right in front of the resort, in fact you can see it from most locations around Vung Tau's front beach. There is plenty of other sights to dwell on, other than the dredge. Overall, we have found the resort has provided the perfect location for a well earned break at a reasonable price. Only one minor complaint, that was the tip we were expected to pay after our massage at the resort's Vanilla Spa. We assumed the fixed price took care of the tip, but otherwise the spa facilities and massage were first rate.

Room Tip: The hillside annex is cheaper but has great views if you are high up and don't mind some stairs...

Dear Woodview103,

Thank you for your kind words and useful tips and also for sticking with us. I think we've made improvements on the quality of our service but I also realize the road is still very long ahead of us that needs our constant effort.

Although in Vietnam it is customary for masseurs, hairdressers, barbers... to expect a tip for their service, it is not acceptable for them to bother customers for it. I'm taking good note of your comment and is taking steps to include everything in the price.

Happy New Year of the Horse.

We were here almost 2 years ago. This lovely Resort and Seafood Restaurant made us came back again this year. The property was right on the beach, its deressed up with white color on exterior, made it looks more attraction, nice and clean. It's located not far from Bai Truoc(Front Beach area) of Vung-Tau , Vietnam. The Restaurant had set up with tables by the ocean with open view or inside with great choice of seafood menu. Upper steps there are hotel rooms, all faced to ocean, on different levels(built on the lower cliff of the mountain). Some of the rooms had large patio area covered with tree shades so you can enjoy ocean breeze on your lounge chairs, just right at front of your room...It's quite and relaxing. It had a little private beach for its guests. Their staffs are nice and poly. I think you will like it here as your home away from home. At the time I post this review, I could not find my camera memory stick for pictures of this recent trip... I may used the last pics. to give you some ideas how it looked. Hope it's OK with you.

Room Tip: Top level is good, but on street level so you may get little noise from traffic(?). Next level, abov...

Dear Spadina Texas,

Thank you for your kind comments. The resort enjoys quite a unique location in Vung Tau and we are taking advantage of it by designing our restaurant areas along the water line and the rooms to overlook the ocean.

I also very much appreciate your photos and your smart tips.

Happy New Year 2014 and soon Happy New Year of the Horse.

Yours,

I took a field trip here with my students and had a great time. The food was satisfying and the staff was helpful. The room was amazing and I had a great view of the ocean. Unfortunately there was very little beach and oil tankers seemed to dominate the ocean view. The bed was comfortable and the layout of the room was beautiful! If working out is your thing they have a basic workout room, but the main attraction was the pool. The layout was marvelous and could accommodate a good amount of people.

Dear Adam W,

Thank you for your comments. Our resort enjoys a unique location in Vung Tau, being almost on the water. The flip side of it is that the high tide covers most of the beaches. But on low tide you have a lot of playground as well as rocky formations with sea life to explore.

We are constanly working on improving our amenities and most importantly on the quality of our service.

Looking forward to greeting you again the the future.

Never again will I book on a recommendation without checking Tripadvisor first. Service was almost on-existent and disgusting when it was there. Lack of English at reception and even though they knew my partner was VN they avoided addressing him! Hillside View rooms means across the street, up the road and nowhere near the facilities of the hotel. Meals were average and overpriced. Breakfast was disgusting with minimal choice. Our AC did not do a thing to cool the room and the neighbours in the above spent over an hour dragging furniture across the floor thus making horrible noises. It only stopped when I told reception I would go up and personally strangle every one of the guests there if the hotel failed to act!
Staff wrestling in front of us while we were dining; trying to eat lunch next to the pool while people were actually coming in there and changing! No hot water to the hand basin in our room; a bed that made noises to wake you up every time you rolled over... I could go on and on. Four star? I do not know who made that up or awarded them to the place. I have stayed in better three star hotels. Never, never again!

Room Tip: Pick any room in any other hotel in VungTau and you will probably have a better experience!
