My family of 5 with my sister in law family, total 8 persons. Stayed at Horas Family Home from 20/3 to 23/3/14. Mr Berend arranged a mini bus which fetched us from the new Medan airport. The journey was 4 hours to parapet jetty. It was raining very heavily before we reached tuk tuk, Mr Berend sent his team to deliver umbrellas & carry our luggages to HFH, it was only less than a 5 mins walk-we reached there at night. Mr Berend told us for the past few weeks they couldn't see beyond 2 metres of the lake view, but the rain was so great just to get rid of the haze. We ate 3 dinners & 1 breakfast there. They serve big portions and were so generous. All the food they served were so delicious. The fishes & chicken were awesomely fresh, they grow organic vegetables & fruits too.
The 5 months old puppy Jackson was adorable, all of us loved being with him. The rabbits & chickens were all lovely. Hmm, Mr Berend even taught us how to fish in his fish pond, we had so much fun & we even kayak around the lake.
We all enjoyed the clean & beautiful front lake view villa which can slept 8 of us, Mr Berend was kind & generous enough to offer us another villa behind our villa without any costs. Wow. We were so well taken care by Mr Berend & his wife Mian, Mian also an excellent cook, especially the BBQ fish, which came with satay, the home made peanuts sauce was tasty, yummy crayfish, Mr Berend taught us how to debone the fishes, chicken was well BBQ to the perfect timing. There were so much food that we can't finish them.
My husband forgot to bring his asthma inhaler, Mian sent someone to buy & got back the inhaler which we are grateful for.
Our flight was 11.45 am, Mr Berend helped us to charter a ferry at 5 am & arrange 2 cars to send us directly to the new Medan airport. We reached there in 3 hrs time, Mr Berend, Mian, Jackson & all his team woke up at 4am to send us off.
We truly appreciate the hospitable, warm & smiles everyone had. We had such a wonderful time at Horas Family Home. The best & excellent place to stay & relax.

Room Tip: Choose the front lake view

We visited Lake Toba 23 years ago and decided to come back for a visit. The trouble is transportation to this wonderful relaxing lake side destination. We are indeed thankful we found Horas Family Holiday who could provide full service in picking up guests from the airport and bringing us directly to this very nice place for a vacation.

We were looking for a driver who will not smoke in the car and speak a little English so we could communicate a little along the way. We are sure glad we did secure HFH's services as we witnessed the chaos at the exit of airport with travellers trying to find public or private transport to Lake Toba. Though we paid a little bit more for a private transfer, this saves us not only headache and heartache but also precious time so we could reach Late Toba earlier for more time to relax and enjoy the place.

Our trip took 4 hours and when we arrived at Parapat, their staff was already waiting for us to guide us onto the next ferry. On the way back to Medan, we did some sight-seeing via Berastagi which took us slightly more than 6 hours visiting water falls, fruit markets and taking pictures of the two famous volcanoes from a distance.

Horas Family Holiday does live to their service excellence and their facilities are in very good condition. The many great reviews from past guests authenticate their putting guests first and foremost in ensuring their safety, comfort as well as ensuring their stay with them is truly a remarkably enjoyable one. Keep it up HFH.

Stayed at the horas family home for 2 nights with two friends in March. Was warmly greeted by Mr Bakke and his team after a 5 hour drive from Medan airport facilitated by the team.

The stay began with a free and pleasant upgrade to the lake-front villa in the home to our very pleasant surprise. Mr Bakke also personally guided and briefed us on what to do around tuk tuk. He also facilitated a relaxing and easy boat trip to tomok and around samsosir. The fish BBQ dinner was really wonderful and it's a must-have and must eat meal should you stay with the horas family home! Pre order required as it will take the team all day and a few days in advance to prepare it.

Jackson the family dog was a clear darling that brightened our stay too!

Would strongly recommend everyone to stay here when visiting lake toba. If you are visiting Sumatra, lake toba is a must-see and the horas family home will be your clear definitely choice of accommodation.

Brilliant and wonderful experience!

Thank you Mr Bakke and team for your wonderful hospitality and pleasantries for taking great care of us!

Loved the animals in the farm - rabbits, chicken, array of fish and dogs. Jackson the puppy was adorable, playful and a total delight at Horas family home (HFH).

The HFH BBQ was fantastic as well - fresh seafood!!! Insist on having the BBQ (with the fish)! Berend the owner, even showed us how to properly debone a fish (fresh from lake toba).

Rooms came with mosquito nets for beds, which was great because we could sleep without any worries.
Temperatures dip to about 20 deg at night, making it the perfect natural air conditioning. Towels, toiletries and even books are provided for.

Thanks to a free upgrade, our little troupe managed to stay in the HFH villa. The villa faced the lake; what a joy it was to wake up to cool air, a well kept lawn, orchid farm and purposefully manicured gardens.
Most of the food from HFH is homegrown in the farm itself - carrots, lettuce, catfish, strawberries etc.

Berend also arranged a morning boat trip in the HFH boat along with a guide and boat driver - wonderful scenery. We went to the stone chairs, market, kings grave and Batak museum. Boat ride is definitely the way to see lake toba!

Small tip - walk three mins to Toba cottages for lunch. We liked the avocado onion bread.

Thank you HFH for the comfortable relaxing stay!

We stayed here for 4 days and were very much welcomed by Berend Bakker and his crew. He gave us lots of great advice about the surroundings. Berend was always around to have dinner with us and give us great lifetime stories. There is a private garden and the place is situated right on the lake which is great for going on boat trips.

Horas Family Home was a home away from home and Berend and his wife, together with the entire staff there made us feel so welcomed and taken care of during our stay of 2 - 3 days.

Our stay there was very peaceful and relaxed, there were options to swim in the lake, take the kayak out for a spin, feed the bunnies (or order them for dinner, if you so wish). Organic vegetables in the garden are also available for you to cook your own meals.

Horas Family Home can also arrange for meals to be served at your rooms or verandahs. We have tried a few restaurants around Samosir, but eventually choose to return to Horas Family Home for our meals since everything was freshly prepared and so delicious.

If you is anything that you need,it is possible to discuss with Berend and he will try his best to make suitable arrangements, whether it is rental of bicycles or booking for transport back to Medan.

They really know how to take care of their guests and we'll definitely stay at Horas Family Home when we visit Lake Toba again.
