“Best part of our trip!”
Reviewed 13 September 2013

The room was stunning and the bathroom wonderful. The food was fantastic as was the service. Everyone goes out of their way to make your stay as great as possible. We walked around the grounds, did some great birding (Hartlaub's touraco, red cheeked cordon bleu's, red-billed firefinches and peacocks) and spotted warthogs, zebra, waterbuck, eland, bushback and dikdik. We did the horseride, although I found it incredibly uncomfortable, we did manage to get really close to buck, zebra and giraffe. I would recommend booking directly with the hotel and not central reservations. They took forever to get back to us and told us they only had an availability for one night and no availability at The Ark, however when we got there we found out it was not the case and could have easily extended our trip. Definitely include this place on your trip!

The good: Amazing views all around. Too much to take in. Lovely staff at reception. Loved the rooms - crackling fire and hot water bottles in the beds was a lovely touch. Very pretty and huge bathrooms. Sounds of nature all around. Deer, peacocks and warthogs abound. Beautiful grounds - had quite a photo session :)

Great food - the buffet that is. The exec chef, Deepak, is a really nice guy. He told us his mantra is not 'he cooks, we eat' but rather 'what we want, he cooks' and true to his word he made a meal for one of our party whose meal had been a bit off. He made him whatever he wanted (which was not even on the menu) and he checked the next morning that all was well. Very impressive. Great breakfast selection too.

Our waiter sorta had an attitude problem..he really shouldn't be customer facing, but we didn't let that mess up the weekend for us. Will definitely be going back.

First off - food - lovely! Rooms - great! We went for a walk in the grounds with their game keeper. It was our first taste of Kenya and it didn't disappoint with giraffes, impala and zebras. Here's the only negative I had about the place... They sold us a '3 hour game drive' for $45 per person to replace the pre-paid 45 minute drive to the Ark lodge for our next night. In doing so they list a load of animals you can see... Yes, you could see them but its unlikely you will see many as the vegetation is so dense either side of the road that things see a 4x4 coming and jump off the road to be instantly hidden by trees. I kid you not... A fully grown elephant can hide inside 2 seconds in the park... Don't book this drive I you go there, enjoy the nature walk and if you're going to the Ark just take the included 45 min standard transfer.

After the rough safari rides from Nairobi throu Masai mara, and nakuru.. arriving to this haven of Peace ws the best present I could receive from our one week safari! We immediately got into massages, sauna... the steam bath does not function and is not professionally constructed, so one gets water outside the door! But otherwise, the gym is great with all the machines one needs....

We even allowed ourselves for some champagne to celebrate the peace after a noisy hotel in Nakuru!
Food was great, pretty international but weighing to Indian taste....

Our room was clean and we could even make a fire if we wanted with the chimney in the room! The best was that water bottle in the bed!! LOL!! That was unique!!

I am going there again soon! I will take the presidential suite this time! Just to spoil myself!

Room Tip: There are many steps before each cottage... not recommended for weak elderly, limping or wheelchair...

We were passing through here for lunch but ended up asking if there was room for us to stay the night as we loved the views so much. Lunch was a good buffet and dinner was slightly better quality. We were the only guests in a large old dining room and it was a little odd! Nice food though. There are plenty of animals near by and we had a guide take us on a short walk, which was very enjoyable. The rooms were really, really nice. Lovely big bathroom with a huge bath and separate shower, comfy beds and a nice seating area around the fire. They come and light the fire and put a hot water bottle in the bed, which is nice. We spent a bit of time reading in the cosy bars which are really nice. Unfortunatly just after supper I started throwing up (my boyfriend wasn't ill, and neither were any other guests). Apart from being slow to replace the towels I was going through, the hotel looked after me well. They offered to call a doctor and didn't expect us to leave the hotel until I was feeling ok to drive, which wasn't until around 3pm. That was very helpful! it was a good hotel to be in whilst ill! We left about 3pm and then twenty minutes later I called to say I'd left a necklace in the bathroom, but apparently the cleaner had never seen it and it vanished into thin air...hm. Apart from that, we enjoyed this hotel and I'd return if in the area.

Like many of my fellow countrymen, I was oblivious to the existence of breathtaking waterfalls in the middle of Kenya! We had the opportunity to visit the Aberdare Country Club with my family and explored the Aberdares not only for the majestic mountain views and unique national park, but mostly for the amazing waterfalls.

There are 4 waterfalls in the Aberdares and I was fortunate to see them all. The waterfalls are separately located and a short drive from each other and walk down (and back up!!) to see them all. This gives visitors an opportunity to walk down to each of the falls and also get some useful exercise!

The Aberdare Country Club is just outside the national park. Situated close to the town of Nyeri, it is approximately 2 to 2.5hours away from Nairobi by car and quite comfortable to drive to. The rooms have been recently refurbished and are up to a good standard. The service is acceptable and the lunch/dinner service was good. We were traveling with 2 young kids so the option of interconnecting rooms is available and was most suitable for lour needs. Little touches like hot water bottles to warm the beds and little fires in each room's independent fire place add to the memory of visiting the place.

There is some good game around as the club has residents peacocks and peahens just walking around the grounds and giving regular shrieks to ensure all around know that they are there!! The club has a lovely golf course and on both occasions we walked around we saw plenty of giraffe, zebra, impalas, antelopes, warthogs in the not so far distance enjoying the club's grounds too! For first time visitors to Kenya I can imagine the excitement of seeing these animals and monkeys so close and part of the same habitat as being a real charm.

All in all a nice outing which we enjoyed.

I would like to give this place a good review but I would much rather stay at the Fairmont Mount Kenya - food, rooms, accounting procedures much better there and you can access the same Game Drives from that hotel.

Room Tip: DON"T get a connecting room in a cottage unless you know the people in the other room - i was k...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Aberdare Country Club, only a three-hour drive northeast from Nairobi, is nestled on a slope of Mweiga Hill in the Aberdare Highlands, part of the Great Rift Valley. This captivating site was selected by an English couple who had decided to settle in the land of their choosing - Kenya. It all happened many years ago; their children grew up there, but then moved on to different places. After almost half a century, their home, "The Steep", was sold and re-named "The Aberdare Country Club". Even though the property was developed beyond the imaginings of the original owners, they would be pleased with how carefully it has been nurtured and the grandeur it has maintained. This is highlighted in Monty Brown's book, "Haven Under the Hill" which says: "Today, despite the fast-changing tempo of the outside world, the old home still retains that comfortable, solid feeling based on traditions from a time when life proceeded at a far more leisurely and gentle pace". The Club's 1,300 acre wildlife sanctuary is teeming with eland, impalas, zebras, giraffes and the more reclusive leopards. It is a haven of unhurried charm set in a garden bursting with a profusion of colour, and with peacocks living within the lush green lawns. Walking through this unspoiled terrain is paradise. Play a round of golf, watched by a family of warthog, or fish for trout, play tennis or just relax by the pool within the beautiful gardens. From here you can see the sunset with the stunning Aberdare Mountains as a backdrop. ... more   less
